Most DJI Neo failures have a short path to a fix: start with Neo powered off, battery and propellers seated, then connect through DJI Fly’s Connection Guide. For first activation and firmware downloads, the phone or controller must have internet access. If phone Wi-Fi still fails, update Neo and DJI Fly, restart both devices, enable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location, and remove other controller or phone connections. A Neo that refuses to lift off needs separate checks for GEO restrictions, propellers, motor rotation, Beginner/Tutorial mode, battery and guards, and (with compatible FPV controllers) Manual-mode settings. If those checks do not clear the fault, use DJI’s Online Repair Request rather than repeatedly attempting takeoff.
This guide follows DJI’s documented workflow for the approximately 135 g Neo identified in DJI’s 2024 FAQ. App labels, firmware behavior, GEO data, and accessory availability can change, so read the prompts shown by your current DJI Fly version.
Start with a quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most useful first action |
|---|---|
| Neo is new and DJI Fly does not show the aircraft | Connect the phone to the internet, open DJI Fly, tap Connection Guide at the bottom right, select Neo, and complete activation. |
| Phone Wi-Fi will not connect to Neo | Update Neo and DJI Fly, restart Neo and the phone, enable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location, then remove controller and second-phone connections. |
| A controller no longer controls Neo | In Camera View, open the top-right … menu, choose Control, then Re-pair to Aircraft (Link). |
| Motors turn but Neo stays on the ground | Check GEO status, propeller placement, every motor’s rotation, Beginner/Tutorial mode, battery and guards, and the applicable controller mode. |
| No takeoff prompt appears after normal checks | Connect the phone or screen controller to a network, update aircraft firmware and DJI Fly, and retry once the updates finish. |
Do not keep arming the aircraft while a propeller, motor, battery, or mode warning remains. Power Neo off before touching the airframe.
How Neo connections work
There are two normal control paths. Phone control uses Neo’s Wi-Fi connection, with DJI Fly providing the setup and flight interface. A remote-controller setup uses the controller’s aircraft link; DJI Fly is still used for relinking, status, and software maintenance where the setup requires it. A controller that is switched on and linked can prevent a phone from establishing its own Wi-Fi session, and a second nearby phone can compete for the same aircraft.

First activation is different from an ordinary reconnect. DJI’s Neo manual requires an internet connection for activation, and firmware packages also need network access to download. A phone that can see a local Wi-Fi network but has no internet route may therefore connect locally yet fail at activation or updating.
1. Establish a clean power and hardware state
- Power Neo off. Do not inspect or reseat propellers with the motors armed.
- Remove and reinstall the battery so it is fully seated. Confirm that Neo and the phone or controller have enough charge for setup and an update.
- Check that every propeller is attached to the correct motor and is firmly secured. An incorrectly installed propeller can let motors spin without producing usable lift.
- If propeller guards are fitted, verify that each guard is installed securely and is not rubbing a propeller.
- Power Neo on and read the self-diagnostic result in DJI Fly. DJI’s beginner guide says to follow any prompt shown after startup rather than dismissing it without checking.
A clean hardware state prevents a connection symptom from masking a mechanical one. If the app identifies a motor, battery, or other component error, record the wording and stop before flight.
2. Activate and reconnect through DJI Fly
First-time activation or a fresh phone setup
- Give the phone internet access using a trusted Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Open DJI Fly and tap Connection Guide at the bottom right.
- Select Neo and follow the on-screen connection and activation sequence.
- Keep Neo powered on and the phone nearby until activation and any offered firmware download finish.
- After the app reaches Camera View, review the aircraft status and self-diagnostic messages before attempting to take off.
DJI’s beginner guide notes that DJI Fly displays a prompt when a firmware update is available. Do not remove power or close the app while an update is being written. If activation stops at a network step, solve the internet problem first; a local Neo Wi-Fi link alone is not enough.

Routine phone reconnection
For a phone that was previously used with Neo, start with Connection Guide instead of selecting an old saved network manually. This puts DJI Fly back in charge of the pairing flow and exposes any activation, permission, or firmware prompt that a manual Wi-Fi connection can hide.
3. Fix repeated phone Wi-Fi failures
Update both ends of the connection
DJI’s documented Wi-Fi procedure starts by updating the aircraft firmware and DJI Fly. Use a working internet connection for the download, then restart both Neo and the phone after the update. A current app with an older aircraft package, or the reverse, can leave the devices unable to complete the control handshake.

Check phone radios and permissions
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Turn on location services. DJI Fly may use location permission during discovery and GEO-status checks.
- Allow DJI Fly the requested local-network, Bluetooth, and location permissions in the phone’s settings.
- Keep the phone close to Neo and temporarily disable power-saving features that shut down Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in the background.
The first three checks are DJI’s stated requirements. Phone operating systems can present the permission names differently, so use the equivalent setting on your device rather than relying on an exact menu label.
Remove competing connections
Turn off a linked remote controller before attempting phone Wi-Fi control. If another nearby phone is connected to Neo, disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on that phone. This matters even when the second phone is not actively flying: its saved connection can retain the aircraft session.
Forget a stale network record
- iPhone or iPad: open the system Wi-Fi settings, select the Neo network if it is listed, and choose Forget This Network. Return to DJI Fly and use Connection Guide.
- Android: open Wi-Fi or WLAN settings, select the saved Neo network, choose Forget, then repeat the connection from DJI Fly.
Do not keep alternating between the operating system’s Wi-Fi page and DJI Fly while pairing. Use the system page only to remove the stale record, then let the guide perform the connection.
Restart in a controlled order
- Close DJI Fly completely.
- Power Neo off, wait a few seconds, and power it on again.
- Restart the phone.
- Confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location are enabled, then open DJI Fly and run Connection Guide.
If this works only after every restart, check for a second controller or phone before the next flight; the conflict may return when that device is powered on.
4. Relink a remote controller
When the controller powers up but does not control Neo, use DJI Fly’s in-app relinking command rather than repeatedly restarting both devices:

| Consideration | Phone control | Remote-controller setup |
|---|---|---|
| Connection path | Neo’s Wi-Fi connection is established through DJI Fly. | The controller links to Neo; DJI Fly provides setup, status, and the relinking command. |
| Separate hardware | Requires a compatible phone; no controller is used for the control session. | Requires a compatible remote controller and, for setups that use DJI Fly, the phone or integrated screen used by that controller. |
| Relinking | Use Connection Guide and clear stale phone network records when necessary. | Camera View → … → Control → Re-pair to Aircraft (Link). |
| Firmware maintenance | Use DJI Fly with an internet connection to download and apply aircraft or app updates. | Use DJI Fly when prompted; DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) is an additional computer-based path for the powered device. |
| Manual-mode controls | Phone control does not provide the FPV controller stick configuration described for Manual mode. | With DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3, the documented Custom/Manual-mode checks apply, including throttle, start/stop, C2 assignment, calibration, and distance requirements. |
Keep GEO status, battery state, propeller condition, and app and firmware versions constant when comparing the two paths. Changing several variables at once makes a pairing fault harder to isolate.
5. Diagnose a Neo that will not take off
Check Restricted Zone status
Open the map in DJI Fly and inspect the current GEO-zone status. Neo may be blocked from takeoff when it is in a Restricted Zone. Move only in accordance with the applicable local rules and DJI’s in-app authorization process; do not treat a warning as a hardware failure.
Inspect propellers with power off
Power Neo off and verify each propeller is on the correct motor and secured. A propeller that is swapped, loose, damaged, or obstructed by a guard can produce a motor-start sound without enough lift. Replace a damaged or incorrect propeller with the exact Neo-compatible part before another attempt.
Observe every motor
Start the motors only in a safe, clear area and observe whether every motor rotates normally. A motor that does not rotate, stops, or behaves differently from the others may indicate a motor error. Shut Neo down and do not continue takeoff attempts when one motor is abnormal.

Review Beginner or Tutorial mode
DJI says Beginner mode may block takeoff when GPS is weak. Check the mode shown in DJI Fly. You can disable Beginner mode when appropriate, or wait for stronger GPS reception and retry. Do not interpret a GPS-related Beginner-mode block as proof that the motors or propellers are defective.
Confirm battery and guards
Use a sufficiently charged, correctly seated battery. Recheck that propeller guards, if installed, are fully attached and clear of the propellers. A low-power or mechanically obstructed aircraft should not be forced into takeoff by repeated stick commands.
For DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3, verify Manual-mode configuration
These checks apply only to Neo configurations that use DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3. In DJI Fly and on the controller, verify:
- Custom mode: the controller is in the mode required for the intended flight, rather than a mode that prevents Manual mode.
- Throttle and start/stop sequence: the throttle is in the position required by the procedure and the documented motor start/stop sequence is being used.
- C2 assignment: the assigned C2 control matches the required Manual-mode action.
- Stick centering and calibration: the controller sticks return to center and calibration completes without an error.
- Maximum-distance setting: DJI specifies that a maximum distance of 30 m or less prevents Manual mode from being enabled. Review the aircraft’s maximum-distance value before troubleshooting the controller as defective.
Because these settings are configuration-dependent, follow the exact prompts and control labels shown for your controller firmware. Do not infer a fault from a missing Manual-mode option until the distance and mode conditions have been checked.

Use DJI Assistant 2 on a computer
The Neo manual documents DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) as another firmware path:
- Install and open DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) on the computer.
- Connect the powered Neo or other supported device to the computer with a USB-C cable.
- Sign in when the application requests it.
- Select the connected device.
- Choose Firmware Update.
- Select the offered firmware version and allow the process to finish before disconnecting the USB-C cable.
Use the version offered for the connected device; do not interrupt power or cable connection during the update. Afterward, restart Neo and DJI Fly and recheck the status page.
When to stop troubleshooting and request repair
Submit DJI’s Online Repair Request when the documented checks do not resolve the problem, especially when a motor does not rotate normally, a self-diagnostic error returns after an update, or Neo remains unable to take off despite a clear GEO status and correct hardware installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDJI’s published guidance does not establish a universal repair turnaround time or success rate. Keep the exact error text, firmware and DJI Fly versions, controller model, and the steps already attempted with your request. That information helps support distinguish a link problem from a motor, battery, or airframe fault.
Quick Recap
Prevent the same failure on the next flight
- Run DJI Fly and Neo updates before traveling to a location where internet access is unreliable.
- Complete activation and a brief systems check with the intended phone or controller before launch day.
- Power off competing controllers and phones near the aircraft.
- Inspect propellers, guards, and battery seating before every flight.
- Check the map for Restricted Zones and confirm the selected flight mode and maximum-distance setting.
- Read self-diagnostic prompts instead of dismissing them and repeatedly arming the motors.
