The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 556 points, or 1.08%, to close at 52,177.69 on Thursday, substantially outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. The advance reached retailers, healthcare companies and other non-technology shares, although sharp declines in Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise showed that concerns about artificial-intelligence financing have not disappeared. Asian markets added to the positive tone overnight, but U.S. futures were only modestly higher or lower at the latest snapshot.
What happened in Thursday’s stock-market session
The Dow gained 556 points, or 1.08%, ending at 52,177.69. The S&P 500 rose 0.33% to 7,744.06, while the Nasdaq Composite edged up just 0.08% to 26,713.03. The gap matters: a rally led primarily by the technology-heavy Nasdaq would suggest continued concentration in large growth and semiconductor shares. Thursday’s stronger Dow performance indicated that buyers were also returning to economically sensitive and defensive companies.
TradingView characterized the move as a broader recovery. Dow components including Nike, Home Depot and Sherwin-Williams advanced, and healthcare shares participated as well. An equal-weighted version of the S&P 500 rose about 1.4%, a sign that the session was not carried solely by the index’s largest companies.
Why the Dow outperformed the Nasdaq
Index construction explains much of the difference. The Dow is a price-weighted index of 30 large companies, so members with higher share prices have greater influence regardless of market capitalization. The S&P 500 is market-cap weighted across 500 companies, and the Nasdaq Composite has a much heavier technology and semiconductor presence.

| Index | Construction and exposure | Thursday’s change | What the move suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Price-weighted basket of 30 large companies; meaningful industrial, consumer, financial and healthcare exposure | +1.08% | Buying extended beyond the largest technology names |
| S&P 500 | Market-cap weighted large-cap index with broad sector representation | +0.33% | Broad participation, but less evenly distributed than the equal-weighted measure |
| Nasdaq Composite | Technology- and growth-heavy market index with substantial semiconductor exposure | +0.08% | Technology leadership was muted and selective |
| Equal-weighted S&P 500 | Each constituent receives approximately the same weight | About +1.4% | Advance was wider than the capitalization-weighted S&P 500 indicated |
The evidence supports a “broader but selective” recovery, not a clean break from the artificial-intelligence trade. CoreWeave reversed an intraday loss and finished 6% higher after falling as much as 10%. Nvidia’s chief executive defended the company’s financial position. At the same time, Dell dropped more than 8% after losing 11% the previous day, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise fell about 7.1%. Those diverging outcomes show that investors are still distinguishing between companies, balance sheets and AI-related capital requirements.
Inflation was hot, but Treasury yields fell
The inflation data initially presented a difficult backdrop for equities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said final-demand Producer Price Index inflation increased 1.3% in September on a seasonally adjusted basis. That was the largest monthly increase since March 2022. Over 12 months, producer prices rose 6.3%, the biggest annual advance since December 2022.

Yet the 10-year Treasury yield moved down toward 5.09% during the session. Lower yields can reduce the present-value penalty applied to future corporate earnings and ease borrowing costs for businesses, helping stocks absorb an otherwise inflationary report. This was a market reaction, not evidence that inflation risks had vanished: both the PPI and CPI figures showed substantial ongoing price pressure.

Is the recovery really broadening beyond technology?
There are several signs of wider participation: non-technology Dow constituents rose, healthcare shares gained, and the equal-weighted S&P 500 outperformed its capitalization-weighted counterpart. Those measures indicate that more stocks participated than the headline S&P 500 result alone would imply.
However, breadth was not uniform. Weakness in Dell and HPE, together with the large intraday swing in CoreWeave, shows that AI infrastructure and financing concerns remain active. A single session cannot establish a durable rotation. Investors would need to see continued outperformance from equal-weighted and non-technology measures across subsequent sessions before concluding that leadership has definitively broadened.

What overnight markets and futures are signaling
Japan’s Nikkei rose about 1.8% and South Korea’s Kospi recovered about 2.8% on Friday. The gains provided a supportive global backdrop, but they did not produce an unequivocally bullish U.S. futures signal. At the latest reported snapshot, Nasdaq futures were down about 0.3%, while S&P 500 futures were flat to slightly positive.

Futures are indicators rather than guaranteed opening levels. They can change before the cash market opens as Treasury yields, corporate news, currency moves and new economic information are priced in. The Asian gains therefore point to improved risk appetite, while the mixed U.S. futures point to continued selectivity.

What investors should watch next
- Breadth: Check whether equal-weighted indexes and non-technology sectors continue to outperform, rather than relying on one Dow rally.
- Treasury yields: Falling yields supported Thursday’s rebound, but a renewed rise could pressure growth valuations and financing-sensitive companies.
- AI infrastructure shares: Dell, HPE, CoreWeave and Nvidia-related news remain useful indicators of whether investors are reducing exposure to the AI build-out or simply reallocating among its participants.
- Inflation follow-through: The 6.3% annual PPI increase and 3.7% annual CPI increase leave little basis for declaring the inflation problem solved.
- Futures before the open: Overnight moves are informative but provisional; the latest futures readings can reverse before regular trading begins.
