Choose the HP Laser 303d when you already have a scanner or never need to copy documents. It is rated for up to 30 ppm, supports A4 paper and has a 250-page input capacity. Automatic duplex printing gives it an advantage over basic single-sided printers for schoolwork and office documents.

Best compact multifunction printer: Canon ImageCLASS MF3010
The Canon MF3010 combines print, scan and copy functions in a compact design and includes an LCD for basic operation. It accepts A4, B5 and A5 media, making it useful for mixed document sizes. Its claimed monochrome speed is 18 ppm, slower than the 30-ppm Brother and HP options, but that difference may not matter for low-volume printing.

HP Laser MFP 1188w

How to choose the right model
- Decide whether you need scanning. Select the Brother DCP-L2520D, Canon MF3010 or HP Laser MFP 1188w for print, scan and copy. Choose the HP Laser 303d or HP 1008W only when print-only operation is sufficient.
- Prioritise paper savings. Automatic duplexing is explicitly listed for the Brother DCP-L2520D and HP Laser 303d. Verify duplex support for other models before checkout.
- Check connectivity. The HP 1188w and HP 1008W are identified as wireless models. The Brother and Canon descriptions supplied here do not establish Wi-Fi support, so do not assume it.
- Estimate running cost. Compare replacement toner, drum units and the included cartridge yield. A lower purchase price can become more expensive if cartridges are small or costly.
- Measure the desk and route. Multifunction printers need clearance for the scanner lid and paper movement. Confirm packed and operating dimensions, power requirements and delivery access on the seller page.
