There were 166.6 million registered .com domain names at the end of June 2026, according to VeriSign. That is a count of registrations, not a count of active .com websites: a registered name does not necessarily point to a distinct, maintained, publicly accessible site.

What does the 166.6 million figure count?

VeriSign reported 166.6 million .com domain-name registrations as of June 30, 2026, in a release published July 23, 2026. It is a quarter-end registry snapshot, not a live ticker. VeriSign’s Q2 2026 report distinguishes .com from other registration totals.

The count does not establish how many .com names resolve to separate websites. Some registered domains may not host a website, and the registration total alone does not say whether a site is maintained or publicly accessible. So the precise answer is 166.6 million registered .com domain names—not 166.6 million confirmed active websites.

How does .com compare with other counts?

VeriSign’s Q2 2026 report gives three figures with different scopes. They should not be treated as interchangeable:

Measure Reported count Scope and date
.com registrations 166.6 million As of June 30, 2026
.com and .net registrations combined 179.1 million Combined total for Q2 2026
Registrations across all top-level domains 401.6 million All TLDs, at the end of Q2 2026

The combined .com-and-.net figure is larger than the .com-only count because it includes both endings. The all-TLD figure covers a broader set of domain endings and is not a .com total.

Why don’t domain counts tell us how many websites exist?

A domain registration and a website are different units. A registry count records registered names; a web survey may count sites and domains using its own measurement method. Neither number automatically answers how many distinct, active websites use .com.

For example, Netcraft’s July 2026 Web Server Survey reported 1,494,915,628 sites across 305,348,459 domains. Those are survey-wide counts, not .com-only figures. They cannot be used to calculate or estimate the number of active .com websites.

Which number should you use?

  • For the number of registered .com names, use VeriSign’s 166.6 million figure and its June 30, 2026 date.
  • For a count of active .com websites, neither that registry figure nor Netcraft’s all-scope survey totals provide a directly comparable answer.
  • When evaluating any quoted total, check whether it counts registrations, domains, or sites; whether it covers .com alone or a broader scope; and the date of the snapshot or survey.
