DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) lets a compatible USB-C connection carry DisplayPort video and audio. But a USB-C-shaped port does not automatically support video: the source device, cable or adapter, and display must all support the connection you need.

What is DisplayPort Alt Mode?

DisplayPort Alternate Mode is a way to send DisplayPort audio and video through a USB Type-C connection. It repurposes some or all of the connection’s high-speed lanes for DisplayPort signals. Other USB-C signaling carries DisplayPort’s AUX channel and Hot Plug Detection (HPD), which help manage communication between the devices. VESA’s original announcement describes this approach.

Depending on the devices and how the connection is configured, the same USB-C link may also carry USB data and power. These capabilities vary: the connector’s shape alone does not tell you whether it supports video, how much bandwidth is available, or how much power it can provide.

How does it share USB-C bandwidth?

USB-C’s high-speed lanes can be allocated to DisplayPort, or shared between DisplayPort and SuperSpeed USB data. Using more lanes for DisplayPort leaves fewer available for SuperSpeed USB data; sharing lanes makes room for both kinds of traffic.

In its 2020 announcement of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, VESA described configurations supporting up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video when all four high-speed lanes are used, or up to 40 Gbps of video alongside simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data. Those are specification- and configuration-specific maximums, not a promise about every USB-C device, cable, adapter, or display. Check the specifications of the equipment in your connection path. VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement provides the figures and configuration context.

VESA’s 2014 announcement also described a single USB-C cable carrying DisplayPort audio and video, SuperSpeed USB data, and up to 100 watts of power. That historical figure is not a universal claim about current USB-C products; check the actual power specifications of your devices and cable. VESA’s announcement gives the original description.

Does my USB-C port support video?

Not necessarily. A USB-C connector identifies the physical connector, not every feature implemented through it. A device may have USB-C without supporting DisplayPort video output over that port. VESA specifically cautions that a given USB-C connector may not support DisplayPort. Check the device manufacturer’s specifications for explicit DisplayPort video output or DP Alt Mode support.

Before choosing a cable or adapter, verify the source port’s video support, the display’s input, and the documented capabilities of the cable, adapter, or dock. A chain of compatible-looking USB-C connectors is not enough to establish that video will work.

How do I connect a USB-C device to a monitor?

DisplayPort monitor

If the source device supports DP Alt Mode and the monitor has a DisplayPort input, use a USB-C-to-DisplayPort converter cable or a suitable adapter. VESA describes reversible converter cables for this connection. See VESA’s explanation of DisplayPort Alt Mode connections.

HDMI, DVI, or VGA monitor

Use an adapter appropriate for the monitor’s input, but first confirm that the source supports video output over USB-C and that the adapter supports the required connection. An adapter cannot add DP Alt Mode support to a source port that lacks it. VESA describes adapters for these display types in its Alt Mode announcement and warns users to verify port capabilities in its FAQ.

Why won’t my USB-C hub display video?

A USB hub does not pass a DisplayPort connection between its ports, according to VESA. For video, connect the supported source directly to the display with an appropriate cable or adapter, or use a dock whose manufacturer explicitly specifies DisplayPort support. VESA’s FAQ covers this limitation.

What to check before troubleshooting

  • Source: Does the specific USB-C port support DisplayPort video output?
  • Display: Which input does the monitor accept—DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA?
  • Connection hardware: Is the cable, adapter, or dock documented as supporting the source-to-display connection?
  • Simultaneous USB data: Do you need SuperSpeed USB data to operate at the same time as video? Lane allocation can affect the bandwidth available to each.
  • Whole path: Are the source, cable or adapter, dock if used, and display all specified to support the required capabilities?

These checks follow VESA’s guidance on lane allocation, adapters, and USB-C compatibility. VESA explains the Alt Mode 2.0 configurations; its FAQ addresses USB-C port and hub support.
