DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync lets a compatible display vary its refresh timing to follow the rate at which a compatible graphics source delivers frames. It is intended to reduce tearing and stutter when frame rates change, especially in games. Both ends of the connection must support the feature; a DisplayPort connector by itself does not confirm Adaptive-Sync support.

What is DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync?

Adaptive-Sync is VESA’s variable refresh rate capability for DisplayPort and Embedded DisplayPort (eDP). Instead of refreshing only on a fixed schedule, a supported display can adjust its timing to match frames from the graphics source. VESA added Adaptive-Sync to DisplayPort 1.2a in 2014; the capability had been included in eDP before its formal introduction for external displays. VESA’s 2014 announcement describes frame-by-frame matching between the display and a GPU’s rendering rate.

The goal is to reduce the mismatch between a display refreshing at a fixed rate and a source delivering frames at a varying rate. That mismatch can produce tearing or stutter. Adaptive-Sync coordinates display timing with incoming content; it does not increase the graphics processor’s frame rate, raise image resolution, or guarantee tear-free output in every configuration.

What does Adaptive-Sync do?

When frame delivery varies, a compatible display can time its refreshes around the frames it receives rather than updating independently at a fixed cadence. This is most relevant in games, where rendering rates can change from moment to moment. VESA also identifies lower-frame-rate video and static desktop content as use cases: reducing refresh timing in those situations may help with playback smoothness or power use. These are intended benefits, not a guarantee for every product or setup.

ASUS VA249QG 24 Inch 1080P 120Hz Eye Care Gaming Monitor, HDMI, DisplayPort
  • 24" Full HD IPS Display: Enjoy crisp 1080p visuals and wide 178 viewing angles for work, study, streaming, and daily use
  • 99% sRGB Frameless Panel: See vivid, consistent color with a slim modern design for home office, dorm, or dual monitor setups
  • 120Hz Smooth Motion: Experience smoother scrolling, video, and casual gaming with a fast refresh rate that helps reduce choppy motion
  • 1ms MPRT Adaptive-Sync: Reduce blur, screen tearing, and stutter for smoother gameplay, movies, and everyday entertainment
  • ASUS Eye Care Technology: TV-certified Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light help support comfortable viewing during long sessions

As VESA’s Display Domain Architect Syed Athar Hussain put it in the 2014 announcement, “Instead of updating a monitor at a constant rate, Adaptive-Sync enables technologies that match the display update rate to the user’s content, enabling power efficient transport over the display link and a fluid, low-latency visual experience.” Actual results depend on the capabilities and implementation of the source and display.

What has to support Adaptive-Sync?

The graphics source and display both need compatible Adaptive-Sync support, and the feature must work in the chosen connection mode. A DisplayPort socket or cable alone is not proof that variable refresh will operate. Check the specifications for the exact graphics source and monitor, including the resolution and refresh-rate mode you intend to use.

Adaptive-Sync support versus VESA certification

Adaptive-Sync is the capability and protocol terminology. VESA’s AdaptiveSync branding refers to a separate certification and logo program; the names are similar but do not mean the same thing. A manufacturer can list Adaptive-Sync support without that claim being interchangeable with VESA certification.

VESA introduced its Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification and logo program in 2022. The program has gaming-focused AdaptiveSync Display and media-focused MediaSync Display tiers. VESA said the specification covered more than 50 test criteria when it launched. Its 2023 update described version 1.1, which expanded gray-to-gray testing from a 5×5 test matrix to a subset of a 9×9 matrix; at that time, VESA reported more than 75 certified display models. Those figures describe the program at the dates of the announcements, not current totals. VESA’s 2022 program announcement and its 2023 specification update explain the tiers and test changes.

Under VESA’s compliance program, products must pass the program and appear on its Integrators List to use the logos. Certification therefore adds a tested compliance claim; it is distinct from simply listing the underlying feature.

How to check a display before choosing it

  1. Find the exact monitor model’s specification page and check whether it explicitly lists Adaptive-Sync support.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s stated refresh range at the resolution and connection mode you plan to use.
  3. Verify that the graphics source supports Adaptive-Sync for that connection and mode.
  4. If certification matters to you, check whether the model carries VESA AdaptiveSync Display or MediaSync Display certification rather than relying only on a general Adaptive-Sync claim.

VESA’s standard-level materials establish the role of compatible devices and certification, but they do not provide refresh ranges for individual models. Use the product’s own specifications for those details.
