A reliable monitor review combines calibrated instruments, controlled test patterns and repeatable settings with clearly labeled observations from normal use. That process separates brightness from HDR peak output, color gamut from color accuracy, pixel response from input lag, and a strong sample from a consistently good model.

What a trustworthy display test measures

Display testing has two distinct outputs: measurements that can be repeated and observations that describe how a screen behaves in use. RTINGS summarizes the goal as measuring “objective-based scientific data and evaluate subjective elements.” A complete test records the panel’s luminance, black level, contrast, uniformity, tone response, color performance, motion, latency, viewing-angle behavior and HDR implementation, then explains visible effects such as reflections, blooming or menu behavior.

The review must identify the exact unit and conditions. Panel-to-panel variation means results describe the supplied sample, not a guarantee that every unit will perform identically.

Test area What it answers Conditions that must be reported
Luminance How bright the image is in SDR, HDR and sustained full-screen use Pattern window size, picture mode, HDR state and automatic brightness limiting
Contrast How dark blacks look relative to white Native/static result and local-dimming behavior separately
Color How many colors the panel can display and how accurately it displays targets Gamut standard, calibration state and color-error metric
Motion and latency Whether moving objects remain clear and controls feel immediate Refresh rate, overdrive setting and timing method
Uniformity and angles Whether brightness, color and blacks remain consistent across the screen and from the side Grid locations, viewing angle and test pattern

1. Lock down the test state

Before taking a reading, record the display model, firmware, input, output resolution, refresh rate, picture mode and whether the signal is SDR or HDR. Document every calibration change. Results should be labeled as factory-default, post-calibration or both; otherwise readers cannot reproduce them or understand what calibration changed.

Samsung 27” Odyssey G5 (G53F) Series QHD Gaming Monitor
  • Samsung’s 27” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals and unparalleled lightning-fast action.
  • QHD resolution (2560x1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
  • With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers precise, radiant hues.
  • 200Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (MPRT) enable fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, and AMD FreeSync Premium reduces choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.

Keep the connection and graphics output fixed for each run. A different refresh rate can alter response behavior, and switching HDR on or off changes the target tone curve and available brightness. Resetting the monitor between default and calibrated passes prevents one mode’s settings from contaminating another.

2. Measure luminance, black level and contrast

Use a calibrated colorimeter or spectroradiometer with full-field and windowed white and black patterns. White establishes luminance, black establishes the residual light level, and their ratio gives contrast. Report native/static contrast separately from any local-dimming result because dimming zones can lower measured black levels while also introducing blooming or brightness fluctuations.

Why window size changes HDR results

HDR displays can reduce output through automatic brightness limiting (ABL). A small highlight window may produce a high peak while a full-screen white field is much dimmer. Therefore a useful HDR report states the window size alongside every peak figure and includes sustained full-screen output. “Peak brightness” alone does not describe movie scenes, games with large bright areas or ordinary desktop work.

3. Check screen uniformity

A full-black field reveals backlight bleed, IPS glow and bright corners. A multi-point grid reveals hotspots and brightness variation on white or gray fields. Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 procedure samples nine points and compares each reading with the center baseline; the same approach makes edge-to-center differences visible instead of hiding them in a single average.

Uniformity is a sample characteristic. A review should identify the measured unit and show where deviations occur, because another unit of the same model can differ. For HDR, also inspect whether local-dimming zones create halos around subtitles or bright objects against black.

4. Track grayscale, gamma and HDR EOTF

Measure luminance at multiple grayscale steps rather than reporting one midpoint. Gamma describes the tone response expected for SDR: it determines how quickly shadows rise into midtones and highlights. HDR uses an electro-optical transfer function (EOTF) to map encoded values to display luminance. Report the deviation from the target curve, including whether the display is consistently too bright, too dark or clips highlights.

For SDR checks, Tom’s Hardware uses a 6500 K (D65) white-point standard. A white point that is visibly warm or cool can be corrected by calibration, but a tracking error across the grayscale can remain even after the white point is set.

5. Separate gamut coverage from color accuracy

Run saturation sweeps and color patches with a colorimeter or spectroradiometer. Gamut coverage or volume states how much of a target space the panel can reach; it does not say whether those colors are placed correctly. Delta E or a similar error metric states the distance between the measured color and its target. A wide-gamut screen can therefore be inaccurate, while a narrower-gamut screen can be precise inside its supported space.

Measure accuracy before calibration and again after a full calibration, as RTINGS does in its methodology. The post-calibration result shows the panel’s potential with a proper profile; the default result reflects what most buyers see immediately. A monitor colorimeter is the practical instrument for quantifying white balance, grayscale error and Delta E; visual inspection alone cannot provide those numbers.

6. Test motion and input lag as different properties

Pixel response time

Pixel response is the time a pixel takes to transition between luminance states. Test many transitions, not just a black-to-white change, and record the overdrive setting. Excessive overdrive can create bright inverse trails (overshoot), while weak overdrive can leave conventional blur. Report the refresh rate because the time available for each frame changes with refresh.

Input lag

Input lag is the delay from a signal arriving at the display to the visible result. It includes processing and scan-out behavior and is not interchangeable with pixel response. A panel can have fast transitions yet feel delayed, or have low signal latency while leaving visible trails. Tom’s Hardware describes a 2025 high-speed-camera procedure operating at 1,000 frames per second for its pixel-response and input-lag work; the review should state the timing method, refresh rate and overdrive conditions.

7. Evaluate viewing angles

Measure the screen from specified off-axis positions using known patterns. Record color washout and hue shift, brightness loss, black-level rise and gamma change. A panel that retains brightness but shifts gamma can still make side viewing look darker or flatter. State the angle and pattern so results are comparable; “wide viewing angles” without a measurement position is not a useful specification.

8. Test HDR against a defined standard

VESA’s DisplayHDR specification is an open standard covering HDR luminance, color gamut, bit depth and rise time. Certification is meaningful only when the test conditions and tier are identified; a peak-nit claim without tone-response or color information does not establish HDR quality.

What CTS 1.2 adds

The 2024 DisplayHDR Compliance Test Specification (CTS) 1.2 uses an 8% center patch for maximum-luminance testing, defines D65 white-point tolerances with Delta-ITP, and tests a 96-color X-Rite ColorChecker SV set at three HDR luminance levels—nearly 300 color checks in total. These procedures probe color volume and tracking at realistic brightness levels rather than relying on a single white flash.

An HDR review should therefore publish peak and sustained luminance with window sizes, black level and local-dimming behavior, EOTF tracking, gamut behavior in DCI-P3 or BT.2020 terms when measured, and tone-mapping behavior. Note whether highlights are clipped, compressed or rolled off and whether bright objects cause visible blooming.

9. Add clearly labeled human-use observations

Instruments cannot fully describe reflections, text clarity, fan noise, stand ergonomics, control placement or the behavior of the on-screen menu. Observe these separately from measured results. For motion, note visible overshoot or persistence; for HDR, note blooming and tone mapping; for office work, note text rendering and reflection handling. Subjective comments are useful when they identify the condition and do not replace the underlying numbers.

Which measurements matter for each reader?

Use case Prioritize
Gaming Input lag, response behavior across transitions, refresh rate, variable-refresh-rate range, contrast, HDR brightness and motion artifacts
Photo and video creation Gamut coverage, grayscale and gamma/EOTF tracking, post-calibration Delta E, uniformity, viewing angle and ICC-profile stability
Office and productivity Consistent SDR brightness, text clarity, reflection handling, viewing angle, uniformity and ergonomic controls
HDR movies Peak and sustained HDR luminance, black level, local dimming and blooming, EOTF tracking, DCI-P3/BT.2020 behavior and tone mapping

How to read a display test without being misled

  • Treat HDR peak, HDR sustained full-screen and SDR brightness as different results.
  • Look for window size and ABL notes beside HDR luminance figures.
  • Read gamut coverage together with color-error data; neither is a substitute for the other.
  • Check response-time graphs and input-lag measurements separately.
  • Look for the refresh rate and overdrive setting attached to motion results.
  • Check whether contrast is native or produced with local dimming.
  • Consider uniformity findings as evidence from one sample, not a promise about every panel.
  • Prefer EOTF curves and tone-mapping notes over a peak-nit number alone.
