Fortnite is the practical winner on October 18, 2026. You can play it now, its modes and Disney collaborations are documented, and its free-to-play economy is visible. Disney’s much-discussed project is not a released, named game yet. Reporting describes an unnamed Disney/Epic collaboration that may use an extraction-shooter format, but its launch date, final design, platforms, price, and transaction model remain unsettled.
That makes this an uneven comparison: Fortnite is a playable platform, while the Disney project is a watch-list item. The sections below separate confirmed features from reported plans so you can decide whether to play Fortnite today or wait for more information.
What is Disney’s new Fortnite game?
The phrase “Disney’s new Fortnite game” refers to an unnamed project being developed through the Disney–Epic Games collaboration. It does not currently identify a separately released title with an official name, store page, complete feature list, or confirmed launch date.
Bloomberg reporting published April 13, 2026 described the project as a Fortnite-based extraction shooter featuring Disney characters. In that reported format, players would fight enemies, collect what they can, and attempt to reach an extraction point alive. The description was compared with the structure of Arc Raiders, another extraction-focused game. Internal reviewers reportedly questioned how original the mechanics were.

- Deep Freeze Bundle: Cool off with the Deep Freeze set and 1,000 V-Bucks. Includes the frostbite outfit (with LEGO Style), freezing point back bling, chill-axe pickaxe, and cold front glider.
- The Fortnite – Darkfire & Ice Bundle includes 10+ cosmetics and 1,000 V-Bucks!
Epic senior director of global communications Liz Markman disputed that the description represented the project’s intended scope. She said the extraction-shooter account was “not reflective of the ambitions of the Disney collaboration” and described Epic’s goal as building “a new games and entertainment universe of Disney experiences.” Those comments leave the reported extraction loop as a possibility, not a locked feature.
Release status and what has actually been announced
The schedule has slipped
On October 12, 2026, Bloomberg reported that the collaboration shooter had been delayed. It had reportedly been planned for March 2027, but Epic moved it to an unspecified date while asking the team to adopt an AI-first production process. The March 2027 target and the delay are reported development details, not an official Disney release announcement.
As of October 18, 2026, there is no confirmed public launch date. A date mentioned in reporting should therefore be treated as an internal or provisional target rather than a promise to players.
Details that remain unconfirmed
No official announcement establishes the project’s title, launch platforms, age rating, price, battle pass, cosmetic store, V-Bucks requirement, cross-play rules, player count, accessibility features, or final gameplay loop. There is also no public hands-on build from which to judge shooting, movement, performance, balance, progression, or server reliability.

Epic’s 2024 announcement did confirm the broader direction of the partnership: an “open, persistent and social universe” connected to Fortnite. Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic as part of that collaboration. That commitment explains why a substantial Disney presence is plausible, but it does not turn an unannounced project into a finished product.
Disney project vs. Fortnite: confirmed comparison
| Comparison point | Unnamed Disney/Epic project | Fortnite today |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | No public release date; delayed from a reported March 2027 target to an unspecified date. | Playable now. |
| Core loop | Reported extraction-shooter structure: fight enemies and reach an extraction point. Epic says that description does not reflect the collaboration’s full ambitions. | Multiple modes, competitive formats, cooperative activities, and creator-made islands. |
| Disney content | Disney characters are central to reporting, but the roster, roles, worlds, and mechanics are unknown. | Documented Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars collaborations already operate inside the platform. |
| Creative ecosystem | Future collaboration ambition is official; the project’s creator tools and user-generated content model are not confirmed. | Epic documents creator-built islands and official Star Wars creation tools. |
| Monetization | Price, passes, cosmetics, and currency requirements have not been announced. | Free to start with optional in-game purchases. |
| Evidence quality | Medium to low: most concrete details come from reporting about an unannounced project. | High for currently documented platform features. |
How the reported extraction-shooter idea would work
An extraction shooter normally creates tension through risk. You enter a match, fight computer-controlled or human opponents, gather useful items, and decide when to leave. Reaching an extraction point gets your haul out; being eliminated before leaving can cost the items or progress you carried. The appeal is the choice between securing a modest gain and staying longer for better rewards.
That description should not be mistaken for a confirmed Disney design. It is the format reported in April, and Epic has explicitly said the account does not capture the collaboration’s ambitions. Until an official reveal shows a playable loop, readers cannot know whether extraction is the main mode, one activity inside a larger world, or an early concept that will be replaced.
What an extraction format could mean for Disney characters
If the reported structure survives development, Disney characters could supply distinct teams, locations, equipment themes, or narrative factions. A survival-and-escape loop could also support crossover events in which a squad enters a recognizable setting and must leave before a threat overwhelms it. None of those possibilities has been confirmed, so they should be treated as design questions rather than promised features.

What Fortnite already offers
A mature set of ways to play
Fortnite is not limited to one battle-royale ruleset. Its current platform combines several official modes with creator-made islands. That breadth matters in this comparison because a player can move between competitive matches, cooperative experiences, social spaces, and user-built games without waiting for a new Disney release.
Fortnite also already hosts official Disney-related experiences. Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars collaborations have appeared inside the platform, so a player interested in those franchises can access themed content now rather than relying on a future standalone product.
Creator-built islands and tools
Epic documents a creator ecosystem in which developers publish islands and can build experiences for the Fortnite audience. Official Star Wars announcements also show the Disney partnership progressing through toolkits and new Fortnite experiences. This is a concrete, operating system for experimentation, not merely a statement of future intent.

Monetization: what is known and what is not
Fortnite’s current model
Disney Parks describes Fortnite as free to play with in-game purchases. You can therefore begin without buying the game, while optional purchases can support cosmetics, passes, or other digital items offered in the platform. Free access does not mean every item is free; it means the initial game access has no purchase price under the documented model.
Epic’s creator monetization documentation says developers ordinarily receive 50% of the V-Bucks value of qualifying in-island items they sell. Epic announced a temporary 100% rate from December 2025 through the end of 2026. The 50% figure is the ordinary documented share, while the 100% figure is a time-limited promotional arrangement. Neither figure should be read as a player discount or as a guarantee of creator earnings after the promotional period.
The Disney project has no announced economy
There is no confirmed price, battle pass, cosmetic catalog, subscription, V-Bucks requirement, or revenue-sharing structure for the unnamed project. Fortnite’s economy cannot be used as proof of what the new project will charge. It may be integrated with the existing platform, use a separate progression system, or change before launch.
| Monetization question | Fortnite | Unnamed Disney/Epic project |
|---|---|---|
| Can you start without paying? | Yes; Disney Parks describes it as free to play with in-game purchases. | Not stated. |
| Are optional purchases documented? | Yes; the platform uses in-game purchases. | Not stated. |
| Is a battle pass confirmed? | Fortnite’s live-service structure includes paid and free progression offerings, but the exact offer can change over time. | No. |
| Is a V-Bucks requirement confirmed? | V-Bucks are part of the platform’s documented creator economy. | No. |
| Creator payout information | Ordinarily 50% of V-Bucks value for qualifying in-island items; Epic announced 100% through the end of 2026. | No project-specific terms. |
Which is better for different players?
Choose Fortnite if you want to play now
- You need a game that is available immediately rather than a project with an uncertain schedule.
- You want several modes and a large supply of creator-made islands.
- You prefer a known free-to-start model with optional purchases.
- You want Disney, Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars content that already exists inside a playable platform.
- You value documented creator tools and an established social ecosystem.
Watch the Disney project if the specific concept interests you
- You are specifically interested in a Disney-character extraction shooter.
- You are comfortable waiting without a fixed release date.
- You want to see whether Epic’s broader “new games and entertainment universe” becomes something materially different from current Fortnite modes.
- You are willing to reassess after an official reveal confirms the loop, platforms, rating, and business model.
Do not choose based on untestable qualities yet
It is too early to declare the Disney project better for gunplay, balance, graphics, performance, accessibility, or fun. No public version supports those judgments. Fortnite has the advantage of being testable, but that does not establish that its combat or presentation will be superior to a future Disney release.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What to check before the Disney game launches
A future announcement should answer these questions before you treat the project as a purchase or download decision:
- What is the official title? A named product and official page will distinguish the game from reporting about an internal project.
- What is the release date? Look for a date confirmed by Disney or Epic, not only a reported target.
- What is the actual core loop? Confirm whether extraction is the main mode, a side activity, or no longer part of the design.
- Which platforms are supported? Check console, PC, cloud, cross-play, and account requirements.
- How does progression work? Find out whether characters, cosmetics, inventory, or achievements carry into Fortnite.
- What does it cost? Look for the base price, optional purchases, passes, currency, and any edition restrictions.
- What content is included? A character roster and world list will show whether the Disney identity is broad or limited.
- What safeguards exist? A rating, parental controls, chat settings, privacy policy, and accessibility information matter for families and younger players.
Why the comparison is difficult right now
Fortnite and the Disney project occupy different points in a product lifecycle. Fortnite has years of live-service operation, public systems, active content, and observable pricing. The Disney project has a strategic announcement, reported development details, and an uncertain schedule. Comparing them as if both were finished games would create false precision.
The most reliable comparison therefore uses availability, evidence quality, documented content, creator support, and transparent monetization. It does not rank unannounced elements such as weapon feel or technical performance.
Verdict: Fortnite is the better choice today
For anyone deciding what to play on October 18, 2026, Fortnite is the clear practical choice. It is available now, free to start, supported by multiple modes and creator islands, and already includes Disney-related collaborations across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.
The Disney/Epic project is worth following if an extraction shooter built around Disney characters appeals to you, but its identity is not settled. The reported delay, unspecified replacement date, and unannounced commercial terms make it impossible to recommend as a current alternative. Revisit the comparison after Disney or Epic confirms a title, release date, playable format, platforms, and price.
