Disney’s “new game” is Smugglers Gambit, a Disney-built Star Wars island inside Fortnite—not a separate Disney console or PC release. Launched on August 16, 2026, it extends the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort into a connected Fortnite adventure. Players take co-op missions around Mers(a) Veta Station on Ord Ryla, fight pirates and Imperial remnants, meet dangerous wildlife, build reputation and unlock gear.
Fortnite remains the host platform, so the two experiences share Epic accounts, cross-platform distribution, moderation, safety controls and the V-Bucks economy. The meaningful comparison is a focused, story-led Star Wars co-op adventure—with an optional theme-park connection—against Fortnite’s much broader collection of Battle Royale, creator-made islands, social features and digital commerce.
What Smugglers Gambit is—and what it is not
Smugglers Gambit is an in-house Disney Games and Digital Entertainment island made for Fortnite. It is not a separately released Disney game with its own console download, standalone launcher or independent account system. You enter it through Fortnite, using the same Epic ecosystem that powers Fortnite’s other experiences.

Disney ties the island to the physical Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction. Eligible riders who link their MyDisney and Epic accounts can turn ride-linked scores into usable credits in the digital adventure and unlock a Forsworn Trooper outfit. Disney describes this as the first extension of that attraction beyond the physical ride into a connected Fortnite experience.

- Launch: August 16, 2026, according to Epic’s announcement.
- Setting: Mers(a) Veta Station on Ord Ryla in the Star Wars universe.
- Developer context: Built in-house by Disney Games and Digital Entertainment on Epic’s Fortnite technology.
- Access model: Playable by Fortnite users, including people who have never visited a Disney park.
- Park reward: Eligible riders who complete the account-linking process can carry ride-connected rewards into Fortnite.
That distinction answers the common question “Is Disney making a game like Fortnite?” Disney is making a game inside Fortnite, not launching a second platform that competes with Fortnite’s entire ecosystem.
How the Smugglers Gambit gameplay loop works
Accept missions in a Star Wars frontier
The island is organized around missions on and around Mers(a) Veta Station. Disney’s description emphasizes a cooperative adventure rather than a last-player-standing match. You and your team take assignments, travel through the Outer Rim setting, confront pirates and Imperial remnants, and respond to threats from local wildlife.
Progress is represented by reputation and gear. Completing missions advances your standing in the adventure and opens equipment to use as you continue. The Fortnite Disney hub summarizes the loop as missions, reputation building and gear unlocks; it does not present Smugglers Gambit as a full replacement for every mode in Fortnite.

Smugglers Gambit explicitly supports teaming with friends. Cooperative missions give the island its identity: players coordinate around objectives and enemies instead of simply dropping into a general-purpose Fortnite match. No published description states a fixed team-size limit, difficulty ladder, average session length or measured progression time, so those details should not be inferred from the premise alone.

Follow a focused Star Wars narrative
The island is tightly themed around Star Wars locations, factions and characters, including Hondo Ohnaka. That focus contrasts with Fortnite’s platform-wide variety, where official events, creator-made islands and social spaces can use entirely different settings and rules. Smugglers Gambit therefore suits players looking for a coherent Star Wars mission structure more than players seeking Fortnite’s full range of modes.
How the physical attraction connects to Fortnite
The physical-to-digital handoff is Smugglers Gambit’s main differentiator. A park guest can begin the process before riding, complete the attraction, and carry ride-linked rewards into Fortnite. The exact reward window, eligibility rules and availability can change, so check the current Disneyland or Walt Disney World instructions when planning a visit.
- Accept the mission before riding. Disney says the mission can be accepted in the Disneyland app or the My Disney Experience app, depending on the resort.
- Link the accounts. Connect the relevant MyDisney account with the Epic account you use for Fortnite. Only eligible riders who complete the required linking process qualify for the ride-connected benefits.
- Ride Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. Your attraction performance supplies the ride-linked score used by the digital mission system.
- Return to Fortnite. The connected information can convert the ride score into usable credits and unlock the Forsworn Trooper outfit, subject to the then-current eligibility and reward rules.
- Continue the island adventure. Use the resulting benefits while completing missions, building reputation and unlocking gear on Ord Ryla.
You do not need a park visit to enter the island itself. Disney says any Fortnite player can complete a Smugglers Gambit quest and receive a Gambit 2D Loading Screen. The park visit adds a different layer of rewards and physical context; it is not a prerequisite for the basic digital quest.

| Comparison point | Smugglers Gambit | Fortnite platform overall |
|---|---|---|
| Primary gameplay | Co-op Star Wars missions, reputation progression and gear unlocks. | A broad mix of Battle Royale, official experiences, creator-made islands and social activities. |
| World and story | Focused on Mers(a) Veta Station, the Outer Rim, Hondo Ohnaka, pirates and Imperial remnants. | Changes by mode, event and creator; it can span many franchises and original concepts. |
| Physical-world connection | Can connect to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run through eligible rider accounts and ride-linked rewards. | Standard Fortnite play does not require a Disney park visit. |
| Social play | Designed around teaming with friends for cooperative missions. | Social features and party options vary by the mode or island selected. |
| Access | Entered through Fortnite; park attendance is optional for the digital quest. | One account and launcher provide access to many modes and islands. |
| Safety framework | Uses Epic’s account, moderation, reporting and parental-control systems. | Uses the same Epic account and safety framework across the platform. |
| Commerce | Promotional cosmetics and account-linked rewards sit within Fortnite’s digital economy. | Uses V-Bucks, digital items, creator-island sales and engagement-based creator payouts. |
| Narrative scope | A concentrated Star Wars adventure. | A platform spanning many themes, creators and event concepts. |
The table shows why calling Smugglers Gambit “Disney’s Fortnite” can mislead. Fortnite is the distribution and services layer; Smugglers Gambit is one themed destination inside it.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Safety and parental controls
What Epic’s controls provide
Epic’s Safety and Security Center says Cabined Accounts let younger players use Fortnite while restricting features such as voice chat until a parent or guardian gives consent. Parents can manage voice-chat settings, require a PIN for purchases and use additional account controls.
- Voice chat: Cabined Accounts restrict chat until the required parental consent is provided; parents can also manage voice-chat settings.
- Purchases: A parental PIN can be required before purchases are authorized.
- Reporting: Players can report conduct that violates the platform’s rules.
- Sanctions and appeals: Epic describes enforcement actions and an appeal process in its safety materials.
- Account security: Epic recommends security practices that include two-factor authentication.
- Community rules: The rules define expected behavior across Fortnite experiences.
A practical setup checklist for families
- Create or review the child’s Epic account and confirm whether it is treated as a Cabined Account.
- Give consent only for the communication features your family is comfortable enabling; leave voice chat restricted if you do not want live conversation.
- Set a purchase PIN before adding payment methods or V-Bucks, so a child cannot authorize a purchase without the code.
- Explain how to use Fortnite’s reporting tools and what behavior should be reported.
- Turn on two-factor authentication and protect the account email separately from the game account.
- Recheck settings after major account, platform or household changes because controls and labels can be updated.
What the controls do not prove
These are available controls and policies, not a measured safety result. No independent study or controlled test establishes a specific rate of harassment, accidental spending, exposure to inappropriate content or other child-safety outcomes for Smugglers Gambit. Parents should treat the controls as tools to configure and monitor, not as a guarantee that every interaction will be risk-free.
Accounts, devices and access requirements
Because Smugglers Gambit is a Fortnite island, you need a Fortnite installation and an Epic account that can access the platform. No separate hardware specification, operating-system minimum, download size or subscription requirement is stated for this island.
- Digital-only play: A Fortnite player can complete a Smugglers Gambit quest without visiting Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort.
- Park-linked play: Ride rewards require eligibility, the appropriate resort app, a MyDisney account and an Epic account linked according to Disney’s instructions.
- Cross-platform account: Your progress and entitlements are handled through the Epic account rather than a separate Smugglers Gambit profile.
- Reward timing: Disney’s eligibility windows and redemption rules are subject to change; verify them before relying on a particular outfit or credit.
How Smugglers Gambit and Fortnite make money
The island sits inside Fortnite’s digital economy
Epic’s published policy describes V-Bucks cards, digital durable and consumable items, creator-island sales and platform fees. Smugglers Gambit adds promotional cosmetics and account-linked rewards to that environment, but no island-specific price list, average spend, retention rate or revenue total is published.

No announcement states a separate Smugglers Gambit purchase price. That means you should not assume a paid standalone game, a required ride ticket, or a particular amount of V-Bucks without checking the current in-game and park terms. The digital quest is available to Fortnite users who have not visited a park, while ride-linked benefits are limited to eligible attraction participants.
Published Fortnite economy figures
| Figure | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 50% of V-Bucks value | Ordinary creator share for in-island item sales. | Epic policy announcement, 2025; this is a platform policy, not a reported Smugglers Gambit payout. |
| 100% of V-Bucks value | Temporary creator-share arrangement shown on Epic’s policy page. | Applies through January 31, 2027, according to that update. |
| 12%–30% platform/store fees | Range Epic lists for payments through the Epic Games Store and current console platforms. | Fees vary by storefront and payment route; they are not an extra Smugglers Gambit admission charge. |
| 40% of net Item Shop and related real-money revenue | Contribution to Fortnite’s engagement pool for eligible creators. | Epic’s 2025 policy description; it is an ecosystem-wide formula rather than a disclosed Disney-island result. |
V-Bucks are digital value. A card or balance does not represent cash, and the amount of usable content depends on the item and the platform’s current store rules. Retail inventory, denominations, regional availability and any eligibility for a gift-card program should be checked at the time of purchase.
Disney’s larger games strategy
In 2024, The Walt Disney Company invested $1.5 billion in Epic’s games and entertainment universe. The stated scope covered Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more. Disney CEO Bob Iger described the investment as the company’s biggest entry into games and as an opportunity for growth and expansion.

That investment is strategic context, not evidence that Smugglers Gambit itself generated a particular amount of money. Likewise, the more than 15.3 million concurrent players reported for the 2024 Marvel Nexus War with Galactus collaboration shows the scale a Disney/Fortnite event once reached; it is a historical figure for that event, not a Smugglers Gambit player count.

Disney’s Fortnite media strategy
Disney has used Fortnite for more than playable islands. In April 2025, Epic and Disney placed the first two episodes of Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld inside Fortnite before the Disney+ debut. The activation also enabled MyDisney/Epic account linking for a First Order Stormtrooper outfit.
That experiment helps explain Smugglers Gambit’s design: Fortnite can function as a place to play, watch, create and connect rewards across experiences. Disney’s D23 messaging calls the island the first extension of Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run from the physical attraction into a connected digital Fortnite adventure.
“Building on Epic’s technology, Disney’s Imagineers are shaping the future of interactive entertainment, where an experience goes from the physical world into Fortnite,” said Adam Sussman, president of Epic Games.

Sean Shoptaw, executive vice president of Disney Games and Digital Entertainment, said the mission aboard Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run extends the attraction into “a connected digital adventure in Fortnite,” allowing guests to interact with both experiences more deeply.
The strategy is different from simply licensing a Star Wars skin pack. Disney is connecting a physical ride, a digital mission, account identity and rewards, while Epic supplies the platform services and audience.
Which experience fits which player?
| If you want… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A focused Star Wars storyline with co-op objectives | Smugglers Gambit | Its missions, reputation system and gear are built around the Outer Rim setting. |
| The widest choice of modes and communities | Fortnite overall | The platform includes Battle Royale, creator-made islands, social spaces and changing events. |
| A reward connected to a theme-park ride | Smugglers Gambit plus Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run | Eligible riders can link accounts and carry ride-linked benefits into Fortnite. |
| A digital-only Star Wars quest | Smugglers Gambit | Disney says park attendance is not required for the quest or its Gambit 2D Loading Screen reward. |
| Strict control over child voice chat and purchases | Either, with Epic’s controls configured | Both use the same Epic account, Cabined Account restrictions, chat settings and purchase-PIN options. |
| Understanding creator economics | Fortnite’s broader ecosystem | The published V-Bucks shares, platform fees and engagement pool apply at the platform level. |
Known limits and unanswered questions
Several details remain unreported or can change. Treat the following as open variables rather than promises:
- No independent hands-on test establishes performance, accessibility, child-safety outcomes or average session length.
- No published figure gives Smugglers Gambit’s retention, average spend or total revenue.
- No direct total-cost comparison has been published between playing the island and playing Fortnite overall.
- No published information states a minimum age, team-size cap, hardware specification, download size or required subscription for the island.
- Ride-reward windows, account-linking eligibility, payout dates, platform fees and retailer inventory are volatile.
- The 15.3-million-player figure belongs to the 2024 Marvel Nexus War with Galactus event and must not be presented as Smugglers Gambit’s audience.
A sensible first session
- Install or update Fortnite and secure the Epic account with two-factor authentication.
- If a child will play, confirm Cabined Account status, set voice-chat permissions and create a purchase PIN before play begins.
- Open the Disney Fortnite hub and select Smugglers Gambit.
- Read the opening mission objectives, then form a party with the friends who will play cooperatively.
- Complete a quest to learn how reputation and gear progression work; a park visit is not needed for the digital quest.
- If you are visiting Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort, check the current resort-app instructions before riding, link the correct MyDisney and Epic accounts, and verify the reward window.
- Review account, chat and purchase settings again after linking accounts or changing the device used to play.
Bottom line
Smugglers Gambit is best understood as a Disney-built Star Wars co-op destination inside Fortnite. Its distinctive feature is the optional bridge from Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run into digital missions and rewards; its practical advantages are the focused setting and cooperative progression. Fortnite remains the larger product, with more modes, creators and commerce. Families get Epic’s established safety controls, but those controls require deliberate setup and do not constitute independent proof of a measured safety outcome. The island’s exact cost, reward availability and economic performance should be checked against the current Fortnite and Disney terms rather than assumed from the broader platform.
