Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better default choice for most Nintendo Switch owners because it delivers a polished traditional kart racer, strong couch multiplayer, and a large course library in a premium package. Disney Speedstorm is the better choice when your priorities are a free starting point, Disney and Pixar characters, cross-platform play, or ability-driven combat racing.

The games overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe centers on familiar item-based racing, Grand Prix competition, VS races, and Battle modes. Disney Speedstorm is a free-to-play arcade combat racer in which each character has upgradeable skills, drifting and nitro management matter, and live content adds racers and tracks over time. The right pick depends less on which game is universally superior and more on how you play, where your friends play, and whether you prefer a one-time purchase or an ongoing free-to-play model.

Disney Speedstorm vs. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at a glance

Local and online play Local and remote multiplayer; the PlayStation listing specifies one to four local players and up to eight online players Extensive local multiplayer and online modes; Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features
Content model Live service with new Disney and Pixar racers, tracks, crew, and customization added regularly Fixed premium game expanded by optional paid DLC
Major expansion Ongoing seasonal additions; no single expansion price is established here Booster Course Pass: $24.99 USD when bought separately, six waves of eight courses, plus additional characters

This table captures the practical difference: Speedstorm lowers the barrier to trying the game but places purchases inside an ongoing service, while Mario Kart costs more at the beginning and offers a clearer premium structure.

What Disney Speedstorm is

Disney Speedstorm is an arcade combat racer built around Disney and Pixar characters. It is free to play on mobile, PC, and consoles. The official platform page lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store availability. Gameloft describes it as a cross-platform free-to-play game that lets players race against one another across consoles and PC.

Racers are not merely cosmetic skins. Each character has an ability set that can be upgraded, so choosing a driver affects how a race is approached. Drifting and nitro timing remain important, but the extra layer is tactical: players must decide when to activate a character skill, how to respond to opponents, and how to handle track hazards and dynamic environments. That makes Speedstorm closer to a hero-based combat racer than to a straightforward party kart game.

Its free-to-play promise

You can download Speedstorm without paying an entry fee. That makes it the easiest of the two games to try, especially for families or groups whose members do not already own the same console. The free entry does not mean the entire experience is purchase-free. The official platform warning states that the game contains in-app purchases, including paid random items.

That distinction matters when deciding whether the game is suitable for a child or for a group that wants a predictable budget. You can begin at no cost, but the service is designed around optional purchases, ongoing content, and customization. Treat the free download as a way to test the racing, not as a guarantee that every progression or cosmetic option will remain outside the store.

Multiplayer and ongoing content

Gameloft’s September 28, 2023 free-to-play announcement says Speedstorm supports local and remote multiplayer, cross-platform play, and regular additions of new Disney and Pixar racers and racetracks. The PlayStation listing describes one to four local players and up to eight online players. Those figures are useful for planning a session, although capabilities can depend on the platform and mode you select.

The live-service approach means the game can change after you install it. New racers, tracks, crew, and customization give regular players reasons to return, but the experience is less fixed than a cartridge-based party game. A later season may add options you did not have at launch, while some rewards or events can be tied to the service’s current schedule.

What Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Nintendo’s established item-based kart racer for Switch. Its identity is immediately familiar: players choose Nintendo characters, collect track items, drift through turns, and use hazards or boosts to change the order of a race. The game is organized around traditional Grand Prix competition, VS Race, and Battle modes rather than character-specific hero abilities.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
  • Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
  • Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
  • Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc

That focus gives Mario Kart 8 Deluxe a stable ruleset. A new player can understand the basic loop quickly, while experienced players can refine drifting, racing lines, item timing, and defensive play. The game works particularly well when several people are sharing one screen because everyone uses the same underlying system and can jump between racing and Battle modes without learning a separate character-power framework.

Course library and the Booster Course Pass

Nintendo’s official Mario Kart 8 Deluxe information documents 48 additional courses and eight additional characters through paid downloadable content. Nintendo Support lists the Booster Course Pass at $24.99 USD when purchased separately. It is divided into six waves of eight courses.

The Booster Course Pass is optional. You can play the base game without it, or access the DLC at no additional charge while you maintain a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. That access is conditional: if the membership ends, you no longer have the subscription-based entitlement unless you purchase the pass separately.

This structure is easier to forecast than a free-to-play store. You pay for the game, decide whether the extra courses are worth $24.99 USD, and know what the pass contains. The trade-off is that the initial purchase is higher than Speedstorm’s zero-cost download.

How the driving experiences differ

Speedstorm: skills, combat, and timing

Speedstorm asks you to manage three kinds of timing at once: your driving line, your nitro meter, and your racer’s skill. Drifting can build momentum, while nitro provides a burst of speed when used at the right moment. Character abilities introduce a tactical decision that does not exist in the same form in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. You may save a skill for a crowded section, use it to recover from an attack, or spend it to protect a lead.

Dynamic track environments add another variable. A familiar route can include hazards or changes that alter how you approach a corner. The result is a more combat-oriented race in which overtaking and disruption are central to the experience.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: items and readable fundamentals

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe uses the classic item-box format. The items create swings in position, but the driver’s core identity is not tied to an upgradeable ability tree. That makes the game easier to explain to a first-time player: steer, drift, collect items, and decide when to attack or defend.

Its simplicity is not the same as a lack of depth. Competitive players still optimize lines, mini-turbos, item defense, and risk management. The difference is where the complexity lives. Mario Kart puts more emphasis on the shared track and item system; Speedstorm adds per-character tools and progression.

Cost, purchases, and long-term value

Question Disney Speedstorm Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Can you start without paying? Yes. It is free to play on the listed mobile, PC, and console platforms. No. The game itself must be purchased.
Are optional purchases present? Yes. The official warning includes in-app purchases and paid random items. Yes, through the optional Booster Course Pass and any applicable Nintendo store pricing for the base game.
Known expansion price Not stated in the supplied official information. $24.99 USD for the separately purchased Booster Course Pass.
What happens if you stop paying? You can still begin from the free entry point, but access to purchased or event-related content follows the game’s service rules. Purchased base-game and DLC content remains available; subscription-based Booster Course Pass access requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
Budget predictability Lower initial cost, less predictable optional spending because the service includes paid random items. Higher initial cost, more predictable once you choose whether to buy the fixed-price course pass.

For a household testing several games, Speedstorm’s free download is a real advantage. For a household that expects years of local play and dislikes store-driven progression, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s premium model may offer better control over spending even though it costs more up front.

Platforms and cross-platform play

When Speedstorm is the practical choice

Speedstorm is the clear choice for a group divided across devices. Its official materials describe cross-platform play, and its availability spans mobile, PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. That removes the requirement that every friend buy the same console.

Before inviting friends, confirm that everyone has the current game version and the appropriate account or online permissions for their platform. Cross-platform support does not necessarily mean every mode, event, or parental-control setting behaves identically on every device. The broad platform reach is the benefit; platform-specific rules remain something to check when organizing a session.

When Mario Kart’s single-platform focus helps

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Nintendo Switch title. It cannot solve a mixed-platform group’s problem, but it is straightforward for a household already using Switch consoles. Everyone plays within Nintendo’s ecosystem, and the game’s local modes do not require a separate cross-platform setup.

Online modes such as Grand Prix, VS Race, and Battle require Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local play is the stronger reason to choose Mario Kart when friends or family are physically together.

Local multiplayer and online sessions

Speedstorm session planning

The PlayStation listing specifies one to four local players and up to eight online players. Gameloft also describes local and remote multiplayer. This combination makes Speedstorm suitable for a mixed gathering in which some people are on the couch and others join remotely, provided the selected mode and platform support the arrangement.

The game’s ability-based combat can make a group session feel more competitive than a purely casual race. Explain the skill system before the first event so newcomers understand why characters behave differently and how upgrades affect preparation.

Mario Kart session planning

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is especially strong for same-room play. Its Grand Prix, VS Race, and Battle options support different attention spans: a Grand Prix provides a longer competition, VS Race lets you tune individual rules, and Battle changes the objective entirely.

Online play requires Nintendo Switch Online. That recurring membership is separate from the game purchase and from the Booster Course Pass purchase unless you use the Expansion Pack entitlement. If your group mainly meets online, include that subscription in the total cost before deciding that the base game is the cheaper option.

Content model: live service versus fixed package

Why Speedstorm can stay fresh

Speedstorm is built to grow. Gameloft says new Disney and Pixar racers and racetracks are added regularly, and the official descriptions also emphasize customization and ongoing content. Players who enjoy seasonal goals, collecting characters, and returning for new events may find this model more engaging than a static release.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - US Version
  • Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
  • Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return

  • Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc

The same model creates uncertainty. Content schedules, available rewards, and store offers can change. A player who wants a complete collection may spend more than a player who simply races with the free starting roster. Paid random items also make it important to set a household spending limit before purchases begin.

Why Mario Kart can feel complete

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe presents a defined premium experience. The optional Booster Course Pass expands it with 48 courses across six waves and eight additional characters. Once you decide whether the pass belongs in your library, the content list is easier to understand than a constantly changing store.

A fixed package is valuable for family use. You can return months later and expect the same core rules, menus, and available content. The limitation is that Nintendo’s expansion does not provide the cross-platform reach or continuously refreshed service model that Speedstorm offers.

Which game is better for different players?

Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you want family couch play

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the safer recommendation for a household that will mostly share one Switch. Its item system is easy to teach, its modes suit both short and long sessions, and its Nintendo character roster provides an immediate point of recognition. The premium structure also avoids asking players to understand an in-game economy before they can enjoy a race.

Choose Speedstorm if your friends use different platforms

Cross-platform play is Speedstorm’s decisive advantage. If one friend uses a PC, another uses Xbox, and another uses Switch or PlayStation, Speedstorm is designed to bring them together. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe cannot provide that mixed-device solution.

Choose Speedstorm if Disney and Pixar characters are the main attraction

Speedstorm’s racers are part of the gameplay, not just visual decoration. Their upgradeable skills and the game’s combat focus make character choice meaningful. Disney and Pixar fans who want those personalities represented directly on the track have a reason to choose Speedstorm even if they already enjoy traditional kart racers.

Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you want a predictable premium purchase

Mario Kart costs more to enter, but the purchase decision is clear: buy the game, then decide whether the fixed-price Booster Course Pass is worthwhile. That model suits players who prefer to avoid paid random items and ongoing store decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Speedstorm if you need a free trial

Speedstorm minimizes risk at the start. Download it, learn the driving, and decide later whether optional content is valuable to you. This is particularly useful when several people need to test compatibility before anyone commits to a purchase. Keep in mind that the free entry point and optional purchases are part of the same service, so agree on spending rules in advance.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Check your hardware. If your group is spread across mobile, PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, start with Speedstorm. If everyone already owns a Switch, Mario Kart remains viable.
  2. Decide whether online play is central. Speedstorm’s cross-platform support favors mixed-device groups. Mario Kart online play requires Nintendo Switch Online.
  3. Pick your driving style. Select Speedstorm for character skills, combat, drifting, nitro, and changing environments. Select Mario Kart for item boxes, Grand Prix, VS Race, and Battle.
  4. Set the spending rule. Speedstorm has optional purchases, including paid random items. Mario Kart requires the game purchase, with a known $24.99 USD Booster Course Pass option.
  5. Choose between evolving and fixed content. Speedstorm adds racers and tracks regularly. Mario Kart gives you a stable package that can be expanded by the defined Booster Course Pass.

Practical buying and setup advice

If you are starting with Speedstorm

  1. Install the game from the store for your device: mobile, PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch.
  2. Confirm that your platform account can use online features and that cross-platform play is enabled for the session.
  3. Run the opening races before buying anything. This shows whether the drifting, nitro, and ability system suits you.
  4. Review the in-game purchase controls and set a spending limit, especially on a child’s account, because the official warning includes paid random items.
  5. For a group session, verify each player’s platform, current version, and preferred racer before starting a remote lobby.

If you are starting with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

  1. Purchase Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch and complete its initial software update.
  2. Use local modes first if your priority is couch play; Grand Prix, VS Race, and Battle cover the main ways to play together.
  3. For online modes, make sure the participating Nintendo accounts have Nintendo Switch Online.
  4. Decide whether the Booster Course Pass belongs in your library. It costs $24.99 USD separately, contains six waves of eight courses, and adds eight characters according to Nintendo’s current documentation.
  5. If you use Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to access the pass, remember that the entitlement lasts only while that membership remains active.

Pitfalls that can change the recommendation

  • Assuming free means purchase-free: Speedstorm costs nothing to download, but its official warning explicitly includes in-app purchases and paid random items.
  • Ignoring the online subscription: Mario Kart’s online modes require Nintendo Switch Online, which adds a recurring cost beyond the game.
  • Treating DLC access as ownership: Booster Course Pass access through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack depends on an active membership; separately purchased DLC is the permanent ownership route.
  • Expecting the same race format: Speedstorm’s character skills and combat systems create a different experience from Mario Kart’s shared item system.
  • Choosing by character roster alone: Disney and Pixar appeal may draw you to Speedstorm, while Nintendo characters may draw you to Mario Kart, but the multiplayer platform and payment model usually determine long-term satisfaction.
  • Assuming technical superiority without evidence: The available official material does not establish a matched performance benchmark, player-count comparison, retention figure, or head-to-head review score. Choose based on the documented features and your use case rather than an unsupported claim that one is technically better.

Final verdict by priority

Your priority Better fit Reason
Best overall for most Switch owners Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Polished traditional racing, strong local play, and a stable premium structure
Lowest initial cost Disney Speedstorm Free download and play on its listed platforms
Cross-platform friends Disney Speedstorm Cross-platform play across console and PC platforms
Family couch multiplayer Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Readable item racing with Grand Prix, VS Race, and Battle modes
Disney and Pixar character abilities Disney Speedstorm Racers have upgradeable skills that affect the race
Predictable expansion cost Mario Kart 8 Deluxe The Booster Course Pass is a defined $24.99 USD purchase with six eight-course waves
Regularly changing content Disney Speedstorm New racers and tracks are added as part of the live service

If you want one recommendation without additional context, buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for a Switch-based household and choose the Booster Course Pass only if its extra courses justify the $24.99 USD price. Pick Disney Speedstorm instead when free entry, cross-platform friends, Disney and Pixar characters, or a live combat-racing format matters more than a fixed premium package.
