DISM error 0x800f0915 indicates that the repair attempt could not find the content it needed through the available source path. It does not, by itself, identify why the source was unavailable or prove a particular Windows component is damaged. Start with the standard online repair, then provide a suitable alternate source if needed.
What DISM error 0x800f0915 means
When this error appears during RestoreHealth, Windows may report that “the repair content could not be found anywhere” and suggest checking internet access or using the /Source option. A Microsoft Q&A user report documents that wording, but it does not establish a single cause for every PC.
Microsoft’s general guidance explains that DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update and can be directed to another source. The error code alone does not establish that Windows Update is down, that a language pack is responsible, or that a particular build mismatch or servicing-stack defect is present.

Run DISM first, then System File Checker
Microsoft Support’s documented repair sequence is to run DISM before System File Checker (SFC). DISM supplies repair files; SFC checks protected system files and may replace corrupted files using a cached copy.

Open Command Prompt as administrator. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthLet the command finish. For an online image, this standard repair attempt uses Windows Update to obtain files.

After DISM completes, run SFC in the same elevated prompt:
sfc /scannowKeep the prompt open until verification reaches 100%. SFC can report different outcomes, including that it found no integrity violations or that it could not perform the requested operation. A completed SFC scan does not establish that every servicing or Windows Update issue is resolved.

Provide an alternate repair source if online repair cannot find files
Microsoft documents using /Source to point DISM to repair files. This example uses a local Windows folder; replace the example path with the actual location of a suitable source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess/LimitAccess prevents DISM from using Windows Update as a repair or backup repair source for the online image. Use it when you want the repair attempt to rely on the specified alternate source rather than fall back to Windows Update.
Possible source locations
- A working Windows installation: Microsoft describes using a mounted Windows folder as a source.
- A network Windows folder: Microsoft’s network example requires the source computer to run the same operating system version.
- Windows installation media: Windows files on USB or DVD can serve as a source. The drive must actually contain suitable official Windows media; an unprepared USB drive is not a repair source.
Choose an appropriate official Windows source for the system being repaired. The cited guidance does not establish one exact ISO or build-matching rule that applies to every 0x800f0915 case, so do not assume that an arbitrary Windows image will work.

If the repair still fails
Microsoft Learn advises analyzing the Component-Based Servicing log if repair does not succeed. The CBS log is located at %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Preserve the relevant error details and gather the Windows version and build, the exact command you ran, and its complete output before seeking support. Those details are more useful for diagnosis than the code alone.
Avoid repeatedly changing command options without a clear reason: the documentation establishes the online and alternate-source approaches above, not blind command variations or third-party repair utilities as necessary fixes.
Do not confuse 0x800f0915 with 0x800f081f
Microsoft’s Windows upgrade help associates 0x800f081f with “The source files could not be found” in that upgrade-error context. That is a different code and context; its code-specific guidance should not be treated as the explanation for 0x800f0915.

If the affected PC runs Windows 10, note that Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical support, or security fixes for that edition after that date. End of support is not, by itself, an established cause of error 0x800f0915.

Microsoft Learn says DISM repair works best when connected to Microsoft Update servers to fetch missing or corrupted files. If that default source cannot provide the required content, specifying another suitable source gives DISM a different path to the repair files. Whether that succeeds depends on the source and the Windows installation being repaired; the error code alone cannot confirm the underlying reason for failure.
