If DISM reports 0x800F081F (“The source files could not be found”), it could not locate the files needed for the requested repair. The code does not, by itself, mean Windows is irreparable. Check that the repair source is available, readable, contains the required files, and matches the Windows image being repaired. Windows Update is the default repair source when policy permits; you can also specify a suitable source with DISM’s /Source option.
What DISM error 0x800F081F means
Microsoft identifies 0x800F081F as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: the required source files were not found. Microsoft’s error description advises specifying their location with the /Source option. The message does not identify which source problem applies on your PC, so start by checking the source and the way DISM is configured to use it. Microsoft’s error-code reference lists the code and description.

Check the Windows image and repair operation
For an online Windows image, Microsoft documents these commands to check its state:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthchecks whether the image has been flagged as corrupted.Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthscans the image for component-store corruption.
If the image is repairable, run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Microsoft also notes that sfc /scannow can be used as a quick check of an online image. For current syntax and guidance, see Microsoft’s Windows image repair instructions.

Choose a repair source that fits the situation
DISM can use Windows Update as its default repair source when policy allows, or use a source you specify. Microsoft’s guidance describes Windows Update and, in applicable scenarios, mounted Windows images, side-by-side folders on network shares or removable media, shared installation folders, and WIM files. The right source type and syntax depend on the repair operation and image; consult Microsoft’s instructions for the Windows release and feature you are repairing. Microsoft’s repair-source guidance explains the available options.
Use an explicit local source
Microsoft gives this example for repairing an online image from a mounted image:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:testmountwindows /LimitAccess
c:testmountwindows is an example path, not a location to copy literally. Replace it with the actual path to the appropriate source on your PC. The /LimitAccess switch prevents DISM from using Windows Update as a repair source, so use it only when the specified source is ready and intended for the repair. Without a specified source, Windows uses the default location for Features on Demand. If you provide multiple /Source locations, DISM uses the first one containing the required files and ignores the others.

Check that the source is usable
Before running the repair, confirm that the affected computer can reach the path, that the required files are present, and that the account running DISM can read them. Microsoft documents these as possible causes of 0x800F081F in its guidance for installing .NET Framework 3.5. That article concerns enabling or installing that feature; it offers useful source checks but does not establish the cause of every /RestoreHealth failure. See Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 troubleshooting guidance.
Match the source to the Windows image
A source can be accessible and still be unsuitable. Microsoft advises using RTM media and keeping the source patched to the latest cumulative update. Repair may fail if the target is patched beyond the source and needs files the source lacks. Relevant language packs must also be present for the locales supported by the image. Match the source to the target’s Windows version and, where applicable, edition, language, servicing level, and WIM index. Do not assume any Windows ISO will work; check the instructions for the exact release and operation.
Account for update policy on managed PCs
On a work or school computer, Group Policy or WSUS settings can affect whether Windows Update is available as a repair source and how optional components are installed. If you cannot change those settings or the repair source is managed centrally, ask your administrator which source to use. Microsoft addresses policy-controlled repair content in its repair-source guidance and repair-content policy documentation.
Quick Recap
If the error continues
- Record the exact DISM command, error code, Windows version, and build.
- Recheck the source path, required files, read access, and compatibility with the target image.
- On a managed PC, confirm with the administrator whether policy or WSUS controls the repair source.
- If those checks do not explain the failure, inspect the DISM and CBS logs for more detail, then use Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows release and repair operation.
