If DiskPart reports “There are no volumes,” it means the command did not enumerate any volumes in the environment where you ran it. That message alone does not prove that the drive was erased or that its files are unrecoverable. Check the disk and its partitions separately before taking any action that writes to it.
What “There are no volumes” means
DiskPart’s list volume command displays basic and dynamic volumes detected on all disks. An empty result tells you what DiskPart sees in that particular Windows environment; it does not explain why an expected volume is missing.

DiskPart has separate commands for disks, partitions, and volumes. A disk may appear in list disk even when no expected volume appears in list volume. Microsoft’s command reference says you must first list and then select an object to give it focus. See Microsoft’s DiskPart command reference and list volume command documentation.
Check what Windows can see
-
At the DiskPart prompt, enter
list disk. Check whether the expected drive appears and whether its displayed capacity is plausible. Do not select a disk based on its number alone.#1 Best Overall

If the drive is listed, identify it by capacity and device context, then enter
select disk N, replacingNwith the verified disk number. Runlist partitionto see whether partition entries are visible on that selected disk. -
Run
list volumeagain. This lists detected basic and dynamic volumes across disks; it is a different view from the selected disk’s partition list. -
If you have just attached a disk, you can enter
rescanand check the lists again. Microsoft describes this as locating newly added disks, not repairing missing volumes or partition information. What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Interpret the results before choosing a fix
| What you see | What it establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
The expected drive is absent from list disk |
The current Windows environment is not enumerating that disk. The output does not identify the reason. | Note whether you ran DiskPart in installed Windows, Windows Recovery Environment, or Windows Setup. Avoid assuming that a partition-repair command is appropriate; the cause may depend on the environment and the computer’s storage hardware or configuration. |
The drive appears in list disk, and partitions appear after you select it, but the expected volume is absent |
Disk and partition entries are visible, but the empty volume listing does not establish whether the file system is damaged, a partition is inaccessible, or another issue is involved. | Do not infer that the files are gone from these listings alone. If the data matters, avoid write-changing operations and consider recovery options before proceeding. |
| The intended volume is listed, but it has no drive letter | A missing drive letter is different from a volume that DiskPart does not detect. | Only after positively identifying the intended volume, you can consider assigning a letter with DiskPart’s assign command. It applies to the volume with focus; selecting the wrong object can affect the wrong volume. |
Protect files before changing the disk
If you need the files, do not run clean, create, format, or delete while the disk or partition is unidentified. These commands change disk state; Microsoft documents clean as removing partition or volume formatting. A command that changes the disk is not a way to establish whether the data is recoverable.

If important data remains inaccessible after you establish what DiskPart can see, consider qualified data-recovery help before attempting writes. The right next step depends on the disk’s condition and the value of its contents; the listing output alone cannot establish a diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a Windows update or recovery USB explain it?
An empty volume listing does not show that a Windows 11 update reformatted the drive, and it does not identify an update as the cause. A Microsoft Q&A thread includes a user asking whether an update reformatted a hard drive and community troubleshooting suggestions, including checking listings from Windows Setup. Those are user reports and community advice, not a diagnosis for every PC: Microsoft Q&A discussion.
A Windows installation or recovery USB can provide access to troubleshooting tools, but booting from one does not itself restore a missing volume. If you check DiskPart from a USB environment, remember that its output describes what that environment detects.
