For a genuinely full load, a modern ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher normally uses less water than hand-washing, particularly when hand-washing is done with the faucet running. Greasy cookware is usually cleaned effectively by a correctly loaded dishwasher on the right cycle, although a careful two-basin hand-washing method cleaned slightly better in a 2020 University of Michigan study. The best choice depends on load size, residue, cookware material and whether you can operate the machine full.
The short answer
Use an ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher for full loads when your cookware is dishwasher-safe. Scrape food into the trash, skip routine prerinsing, aim the dirtiest surfaces toward the spray jets and choose a cycle matched to the residue. This combination generally minimizes water and energy while removing ordinary grease.
If you must wash by hand, use two basins: one with hot soapy water for washing and a second with clean rinse water. That method was the most energy-efficient hand-washing approach in a 2020 University of Michigan study and produced slightly cleaner results than the machine tested. Leaving the faucet running while you wash is the least water-efficient option.

Water use: the numbers that matter
Different figures describe different test conditions, so do not treat every gallon claim as interchangeable. Consumer Reports’ 2023 testing guidance says current dishwashers used about 3–6 gallons per cycle. Federal standards for dishwashers sold since 2013 allow no more than 5 gallons in the standardized test. The test method, selected cycle and model explain why figures reported for a particular machine can differ.

| Method | Water finding | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Modern dishwasher | About 3–6 gallons per cycle | Consumer Reports testing guidance, 2023; actual use varies by model and cycle. |
| Dishwashers sold since 2013 | No more than 5 gallons in the standardized test | Federal efficiency limit cited by Consumer Reports; it is a test-condition requirement, not a promise that every cycle uses exactly 5 gallons. |
| Hand-washing with the faucet running | About 22 gallons | Consumer Reports comparison; flow rate, wash time and habits change the result. |
| Two-basin hand-washing | Not stated as one universal gallon figure | The University of Michigan study identified it as the most energy-efficient hand method; water use depends on basin size and how often water is replaced. |
ENERGY STAR’s current dishwasher guidance estimates that a new certified dishwasher can save 8,400 gallons of water per year. That is an annual estimate based on the program’s assumed use pattern, so your savings will be higher or lower depending on household size, load frequency and whether you previously washed under running water.
How well each method handles grease and baked-on food
Ordinary greasy cookware
Many efficient dishwashers remove ordinary grease without prerinsing. Consumer Reports found no clear relationship between a machine’s water use and its cleaning score: a lower-water model is not automatically a worse cleaner, and a high-water model is not automatically better. Loading, detergent, cycle selection and spray coverage have more practical influence on a given load.
Place greasy pans so that the soiled face points toward a spray arm, and avoid nesting items that shield one another. A full load is efficient only when water and detergent can reach every surface.

Baked-on or polymerized residue
Heavy or turbo cycles and targeted spray jets improved baked-on food removal in Consumer Reports testing. They still are not guarantees for every pan or every residue. If a dish comes out dirty, check whether the residue requires a more intensive cycle and whether another item blocked the spray path.
Very stubborn deposits may be better handled with controlled hand work, especially when the pan’s manufacturer prohibits dishwasher use. Do not use an abrasive pad on a surface that can scratch; match the tool to the cookware material.
What the 2020 hand-washing study shows—and does not show
The University of Michigan study, summarized by Consumer Reports, compared washing approaches under controlled conditions. Two-basin washing cleaned slightly better than the machine used in that study and was the most energy-efficient hand method. That result does not mean every hand-washing routine beats every dishwasher: the faucet-running approach performed worst environmentally, and dishwasher performance varies substantially by model, loading and cycle.

Why the dishwasher usually wins on energy
ENERGY STAR states that a new certified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as washing dishes by hand and can save 8,400 gallons of water each year. The statement applies to certified models and the program’s use assumptions; it is not a guarantee for an older, poorly maintained machine or a nearly empty load.

It avoids continuously heating incoming water and limits the amount of water that must be reheated or replaced. Exact energy and water totals depend on basin volume, water temperature, heater efficiency and how often you change the wash or rinse water.
How to use a dishwasher for greasy cookware
- Scrape, do not routinely prerinse. Remove bones, peels and large food deposits into the trash or compost. EPA WaterSense and ENERGY STAR recommend scraping instead of rinsing dishes under the tap. A light smear of grease is generally preferable to wasting water before the machine starts.
- Check the cookware label. Follow the pan manufacturer’s instructions for dishwasher safety. Some finishes, coatings, handles and bonded materials can be damaged even when a similar-looking pan is dishwasher-safe.
- Load for spray access. Put the dirtiest surfaces toward the spray jets, keep items from nesting, and make sure rotating spray arms can move freely. Do not let a large pan shield plates or cups.
- Choose the cycle for the residue. Use a normal cycle for routine soil. Select a heavy or turbo cycle when food is baked on, when the machine provides that option, or when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it.
- Run a full load. Wait until the racks are full enough to use the cycle efficiently, but do not pack them so tightly that water cannot circulate. A full load is a water-saving practice only when surfaces remain exposed.
- Inspect before putting items away. If grease remains, identify the blocked surface or inadequate cycle rather than assuming that using more water would solve it. Rewash the item with a suitable cycle or use the appropriate hand method for that cookware.
How to use the two-basin hand-washing method
- Set up two containers. Fill one basin with hot soapy water for washing and a second with clean water for rinsing. The study’s result depends on this separation; washing everything under a continuously running faucet is a different method.
- Scrape first. Remove solids before the item enters either basin. This keeps the wash water usable longer and prevents food particles from spreading across cookware.
- Wash from least greasy to most greasy. Start with glasses, flatware and lightly soiled dishes, then move to plates and greasy pans. This delays replacing the wash water.
- Use the right tool. A nonabrasive sponge is appropriate for delicate or nonstick cookware. A scouring pad or brush can remove tougher residue from surfaces that the manufacturer says can tolerate it.
- Rinse in the second basin. Fully immerse or rinse each item in the clean-water basin rather than letting the faucet run continuously. Replace basin water when it is visibly dirty or no longer effective, recognizing that the study did not establish one universal replacement schedule.
- Air-dry or use a clean towel. Keep washed items separated from unwashed cookware so grease and food particles are not transferred back.
Cookware compatibility and damage prevention
| Cookware situation | Safer approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Delicate or nonstick surface | Use a nonabrasive sponge and follow the manufacturer’s dishwasher instructions. | Abrasive tools can scratch or wear coatings; dishwasher safety is material- and product-specific. |
| Tough residue on a durable surface | Use a scouring pad or brush only when the manufacturer permits it. | Stronger tools help with stubborn soil but can damage finishes that are not abrasion-resistant. |
| Pan labeled hand-wash only | Use the two-basin method. | The label takes priority over general dishwasher advice. |
| Greasy pan with baked-on food | Try the dishwasher’s heavy/turbo cycle if the pan is approved for machine washing; otherwise wash it carefully by hand. | Targeted jets and intensive cycles improve removal in testing, but no cycle guarantees every result. |
Choosing the method for common household situations
You have a full rack of everyday dishes
Run the ENERGY STAR dishwasher. Scrape solids, load so spray can reach the soil and select the normal cycle unless residue requires a heavier setting.

You have only a few items
Do not start a nearly empty machine solely to avoid hand work. Use a basin-based wash when you cannot assemble a genuinely full load. The efficient choice depends on how much water your basins hold and whether you would otherwise leave the tap running.
You have a large batch of greasy cookware
Use the dishwasher when every item is approved for machine washing and the rack can be loaded without blocking spray. Grouping pans so their dirty faces are exposed is more important than selecting a cycle solely by its water rating.
You have nonstick, delicate or specialty cookware
Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. If hand-washing is required, use a nonabrasive sponge in the wash basin and reserve stronger pads for materials that explicitly allow them.

Troubleshooting poor dishwasher results
Grease film remains on several items
- Check that greasy surfaces face the spray jets rather than another dish.
- Remove nesting and overloading that could block water circulation.
- Use the cycle intended for heavier soil instead of repeating a light cycle.
- Confirm that each item is dishwasher-safe and that its care instructions do not require hand-washing.
Only one pan is still dirty
Look for a blocked spray path or a residue type that needs targeted cleaning. Rewash that pan with the approved heavy/turbo cycle or use the two-basin method and a suitable nonabrasive or abrasive tool, depending on the finish.
Food is baked on after the intensive cycle
Do not assume that a still-dirty pan proves the dishwasher is inefficient. Consumer Reports’ testing found no simple water-use-to-cleaning relationship, and even targeted jets and heavy cycles have limits. Hand-wash the item if its material permits and investigate loading or cookware-care constraints before changing the entire household routine.
Environmental trade-offs beyond the faucet
Water is only one part of the comparison. ENERGY STAR reports a substantial energy advantage for certified dishwashers over hand-washing, while the University of Michigan study found two-basin washing to be the most energy-efficient hand method. A fair comparison therefore includes water, energy, detergent, the number of items washed and whether the dishwasher is run full.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Running water continuously combines high water use with the energy needed to heat that incoming water. Two-basin washing controls both variables better, but it requires labor and does not provide a single universal gallon figure because basin capacity and replacement habits differ.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose the dishwasher when you have a full load, the cookware is approved for machine washing and you can expose greasy surfaces to the spray.
- Choose two basins when the load is too small for an efficient machine cycle, cookware is hand-wash-only or you need direct control over a delicate finish.
- Avoid the running faucet when water conservation matters.
- Use a heavier machine cycle for baked-on residue when the cookware and appliance instructions permit it.
- Never trade a coating for a water saving. A scratched nonstick surface or damaged finish is not an efficiency gain; follow the cookware maker’s care requirements.
Bottom line
For most full loads, an ENERGY STAR dishwasher is the water- and energy-saving choice, and it cleans ordinary greasy cookware well when loaded correctly. A two-basin wash is the best hand-washing alternative and may clean slightly better in controlled testing. Continuous faucet washing uses the most water, while no method can guarantee removal of every baked-on deposit from every pan.
