A “wet dog” or pond-water smell from a dishwasher does not by itself prove the drain hose is at fault. Start by cleaning accessible food residue, then check whether dirty water returns between cycles and inspect the hose and sink connection. A drain-hose problem matters most when water is not draining properly or dirty water is collecting in the tub.
What a wet-dog smell can—and cannot—tell you
“Wet dog” is a description of an odor, not a technical diagnosis. There is no established evidence here that ranks its causes or shows that a drain hose is the usual culprit. Food residue and mildew are documented sources of dishwasher odors, while dirty water collecting in the tub between uses can point to a drain-hose installation or backflow problem.
Notice when the odor appears—after a cycle, after the dishwasher has sat, or only on dishes. That observation can help you decide what to inspect, but it is not a confirmed diagnostic test.

Start with food residue and blocked parts
- Turn the dishwasher off. Follow the owner’s manual before handling the filter or drain area.
- Clean the removable filter, if your model has one. Remove food residue as directed by the manual. Take care around sharp debris.
- Inspect only accessible areas. Check around the sump or pump inlet for debris and look for blocked spray-arm jets. GE Appliances identifies debris around the pump inlet and blocked jets as checks for food or mildew odor; LG also advises removing food residue from filters. GE Appliances odor guidance and LG dishwasher troubleshooting provide model-specific advice.
Do not reach into areas you cannot safely access or dismantle parts not covered by your manual.

Check whether dirty water is returning
Look for dirty water that accumulates in the tub between uses. GE Appliances links that symptom with a drain hose that lacks the required high loop or air gap. Some models may retain a small amount of water around the filter area, so compare what you see with your model’s manual rather than treating any water as a fault.
GE Appliances states: “The drain hose must have a high drain loop or be connected to an air gap.” The correct setup depends on the dishwasher model and installation. Check the appliance’s installation instructions rather than applying a universal hose height.

Inspect the hose and sink connection under the sink
- Look for a drain hose that is kinked, pinched, or visibly damaged.
- Check whether the sink drain, disposal connection, or air gap (if present) is obstructed.
- If a garbage disposer was recently installed, check the dishwasher and disposer instructions. A knockout plug left in the disposer connection can prevent drainage.

A high loop routes the drain hose above the sink drain’s water level; an air gap is another backflow-prevention arrangement. Both are intended to stop wastewater from flowing back into the dishwasher. The required arrangement is model- and installation-specific, so verify it in your dishwasher’s instructions. Samsung and Whirlpool also describe high-loop or air-gap checks in their drainage guidance.

When a dishwasher cleaner helps—and when it does not
A machine-cleaning product may help with maintenance when residue or mildew is contributing to the odor. Follow the dishwasher manual and the cleaner’s label. Cleaning cannot fix a missing high loop, backflow, a blockage, or a damaged hose; those require correcting the installation or drainage problem.

Consult the model’s support information or a qualified appliance technician if the dishwasher still drains poorly after the basic checks, the hose is damaged, or you cannot safely inspect the relevant connection. The odor alone is not enough to diagnose a hose fault.
