There is no single best dishwasher drying method. Heated dry adds direct heat and is usually the most predictable for glass, ceramic and metal. Fan-assisted systems move humid air away and can be better for plastics, although some use room-temperature air while others also use a heater. Auto-open systems release steam by opening the door near the end of the cycle; they can reduce trapped humidity and may be combined with a fan or heater.
Choose by the loads you wash, your tolerance for a partly open door, countertop clearance and the model’s yellow EnergyGuide label—not by the feature name alone.
How the three drying methods work
Heated dry
A heating element raises the temperature of the final-rinse water, dishwasher air or both. The added heat evaporates surface water, and the resulting vapor is removed through the machine’s venting path. It is a straightforward, familiar approach: when the cycle ends, rigid items such as plates, glasses and stainless-steel cutlery are often ready to put away with little handling.
Heat does not guarantee that every item will be dry. Plastic containers and lids hold droplets because they have low thermal mass and shed heat quickly. Recessed bases can also retain pools of water. ENERGY STAR notes that some certified dishwashers allow heated dry to be switched off, letting you trade drying speed for lower energy use. A Midea MDT24H3AST specification, for example, lists a heated-dry option alongside an extended-dry system that uses two fan-assisted fans. That illustrates why a cycle label should be read as a description of one model, not a universal standard.

Fan-assisted dry
A fan moves moist air away from the racks, increasing evaporation without relying solely on a hot, stagnant interior. Implementations differ substantially. KitchenAid describes an air-dry mode that circulates room-temperature air without a heating element, while its Fan-Enabled ProDry combines a fan with a heater. LG calls its Dynamic Heat Dry a hot-air circulation system. In other words, “fan dry” can mean unheated ventilation, heated ventilation or a selectable combination.
Active airflow is particularly useful for plastics because it carries vapor away after the rinse. One GE Dry Boost with Fan Assist description claims hard-to-dry plastics can be up to three times drier than that model’s heated-dry cycle. The figure is a single-model manufacturer claim, not a controlled result that applies to every fan system or load.
Auto-open or door-open dry
Near the end of the program, the door opens a small amount. Steam escapes, and cooler room air enters to support natural evaporation. Some machines add an internal fan or heater; others rely mainly on ventilation.
Samsung documents AutoRelease Dry opening during the final 5–15 minutes, after the interior temperature falls below 122°F. An internal fan runs to help protect the countertop from concentrated moisture. Whirlpool’s Door Open Dry opens the door a few inches after the washing phase so hot air can escape and fresh air circulate. Similar labels include Auto Open Dry, Natural Dry and Air Dry. Fisher & Paykel combines fan-assisted drying with automatic opening and an air curtain that directs steam away from the adjacent benchtop.

These approaches are not mutually exclusive. Samsung catalogs Smart Dry with AutoRelease Door, Heat Dry with AutoRelease Door and Heat Dry as separate combinations. A dishwasher can therefore use heat, airflow and an opening door in one sequence; compare the complete cycle specification rather than assuming that one label replaces the others.
Which method dries plastics best?
Plastic is the hardest material for any dishwasher to dry. It cools rapidly, so condensation remains after a hot rinse; lightweight pieces can also sit in rack recesses where water pools. A heated-only cycle may leave droplets even when glassware is dry.
Look first for a documented fan-assisted or hybrid system when plastic containers are a recurring problem. Air movement removes saturated air from around the racks, and a heater-assisted fan can keep evaporation going longer. The “up to three times drier” statement associated with GE’s Dry Boost with Fan Assist should be treated as a model-specific ceiling, not a promise for another brand or a different load.

Auto-open can also help plastics by replacing humid interior air with room air. Its benefit depends on the room’s temperature and humidity, the opening size and how long the door remains ajar. A hybrid that combines a fan with auto-open generally gives the most active ventilation, but it may cost more, run longer or require additional clearance.

Energy use, water and operating cost
Drying energy is only one part of a dishwasher’s utility consumption. ENERGY STAR’s current consumer guidance estimates about $50 per year to run a standard-size ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher. The same guidance estimates roughly 5,800 gallons of water saved over the dishwasher’s lifetime compared with less-efficient alternatives. Those are dishwasher-level figures, not a ranking of drying technologies.
Compared with hand washing, ENERGY STAR estimates about $220 per year in utility-bill savings and approximately $3,300 over the appliance lifetime. The actual amount varies with local electricity, gas and water rates, cycle selection and how often the machine runs.
Use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare annual energy consumption for specific models. A heated option may draw more electricity during the final phase, while a fan can add electricity use even when it avoids prolonged heating. Auto-open may use little additional power, but a model that also runs a heater or fan can have a different total. Check the manual’s cycle table for duration, heated-dry settings and any selectable energy-saving mode.

Choose heated dry when rigid dishes are the priority
- You mostly wash glass, ceramic, stainless steel and other heat-retaining items.
- You want a familiar setting with predictable results at the end of the cycle.
- You can accept the model-specific energy cost shown on its EnergyGuide label.
Confirm whether heated dry can be disabled. Turning it off can lower energy use when you are willing to unload later or towel-dry a few pieces.

Choose fan-assisted or hybrid drying for mixed loads
- Plastic storage boxes, lids and bottles make up a substantial part of each load.
- You want active removal of humid air rather than relying only on residual heat.
- You are comfortable checking whether the fan uses room-temperature air, a heater, or both.
Ask for the exact fan behavior in the product specification. A room-temperature air-dry mode and a heated fan cycle can have different drying performance, energy use and noise.
Choose auto-open when steam control matters
- You notice a wet interior or heavy steam after conventional cycles.
- Your cabinetry and countertop allow the door to open without striking an island, handle or adjacent appliance.
- You prefer venting to the room instead of keeping hot, saturated air trapped inside.
Inspect the installation diagram for the required clearance above and in front of the door. If the dishwasher sits beneath a moisture-sensitive wood or laminate counter, prefer a design with an internal fan or an air curtain that directs vapor away from the benchtop.

Check door clearance before buying
An auto-open door needs a clear path at the end of the cycle. Measure the distance to the opposite cabinet, island and appliance handles with the racks loaded, not just with the door closed. Verify that the countertop overhang does not block the opening. If the unit is integrated with a cabinet panel, confirm that the panel can move through the full opening angle.

- Angle cups, bowls and containers so their rims do not hold water.
- Place plastic pieces where spray reaches them and where air can circulate around their surfaces.
- Keep tall items from blocking the vent or fan outlet.
- Do not nest containers tightly; trapped water will remain regardless of the drying mode.
Use rinse aid as directed
Rinse aid lowers water’s surface tension so droplets sheet off dishes instead of clinging to them. Follow the dispenser setting and the manual’s guidance for your water hardness. Too little can leave spotting and wetness; too much can cause foaming or residue. Rinse aid improves the conditions for every drying method but does not turn a poorly loaded rack into a dry one.

Cycle timing, noise and everyday behavior
Drying may extend the total program. Heated systems spend time raising and holding temperature; fan systems may continue circulating air after the heater stops; auto-open systems reserve time for the door to vent safely. Compare the published cycle duration for the exact program you use, not only the shortest advertised cycle.
A fan can be audible during the final phase, and an auto-open door can release a noticeable burst of steam. Neither behavior indicates a fault when it matches the manual. Keep the door area clear until the cycle is complete, and avoid touching the opening immediately after a hot program.
Troubleshooting wet dishes and excess steam
Glass and ceramic are wet
- Check that rinse aid is filled and the dispenser setting matches your water conditions.
- Confirm that heated dry or the model’s active-dry option is enabled.
- Inspect loading angles so recessed bases are not holding water.
- Run the recommended high-temperature or extended-dry option if the manual provides one.
Plastics are wet while other items are dry
- Move plastic items to an exposed rack position and tilt them to drain.
- Use the fan-assisted, extended-dry or hybrid cycle if available.
- Allow the cycle’s full drying phase to finish before opening the door manually.
- Expect some droplets on lightweight plastics even when the system is operating normally.
Steam reaches the countertop
- Verify that the auto-open door has unobstructed clearance.
- Check whether the model’s internal fan or air curtain is enabled.
- Inspect the installation and vapor-protection instructions for the countertop material.
- If moisture persists, use a cycle with active fan ventilation or contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
What to verify in a product listing or manual
- The exact drying sequence: heater, room-temperature fan, heated fan, auto-open door, or a combination.
- Whether heated dry can be turned off and whether an extended-dry option is available.
- Door-opening timing and the temperature threshold, if the model publishes them.
- Required door and countertop clearances.
- Annual energy consumption on the yellow EnergyGuide label.
- Cycle duration, noise rating and rinse-aid recommendations.
- Rack positions that the manufacturer recommends for plastics.
Feature names such as Fan Dry, AutoVent, AutoRelease, Natural Dry and Door Open Dry are marketing labels, not standardized technical categories. Read the model number’s specification and installation manual before treating two similarly named systems as equivalent.

Limits of cross-brand comparisons
Manufacturer descriptions and ENERGY STAR guidance explain how these systems are intended to work, but they do not establish a controlled, cross-brand test ranking heated, fan-assisted and auto-open systems on identical loads. Performance depends on rack design, rinse temperature, ambient humidity, loading and cycle settings. Treat quoted improvements, including the “up to three times drier” plastic claim, as evidence for the named model only.
The Bottom Line
For mostly rigid dishes, compare heated-dry results and EnergyGuide consumption. For recurring plastic moisture, prioritize a documented fan-assisted or hybrid system. For steam management, choose auto-open only when the installation has adequate clearance, and verify whether it also uses a fan or heater.
