To censor flagged words in messages you receive on Discord mobile, open User Settings > Privacy & Safety and enable Enable language filter. It is an optional personal setting: it redacts words from Discord’s preset list, but you cannot add your own terms. Discord says the feature is experimental and may not be available to every account.
Turn on the language filter in the Discord mobile app
-
Open Discord and tap the cogwheel to open User Settings.
-
Go to Privacy & Safety.
-
Turn on Enable language filter. To stop filtering, return to the same setting and turn it off.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Discord documents this setting for mobile, desktop, and browser. It is opt-in and disabled by default. The setting applies across the devices on which you use Discord, according to Discord’s language filter instructions, updated July 1, 2024.

What the filter censors—and what it leaves to you
The filter covers words from a Discord-selected list of commonly flagged terms. Discord describes categories including insults and slurs, sexually explicit or sensitive content, and severe profanity. Detected terms are redacted with asterisks in messages you receive in DMs, group DMs, and servers where moderators have not enabled AutoMod.
The list is not customizable: you cannot add words to your personal filter, and there is no reveal option for a redacted word while the filter remains enabled. To view filtered text, you must disable the setting. Discord says the filtering runs locally on your device rather than sending messages to its servers for filtering.

Discord describes the feature as an experiment that is not available to all users. If Enable language filter is missing, the account may not have access; Discord does not specify a universal rollout date, selection criteria, or a guaranteed workaround. The filter uses a preset list, so it may not catch every term you want to hide.

The language filter changes what you see in your own Discord client. AutoMod is configured by server moderators to block or flag messages for the community. It offers preset word lists and custom keyword rules; depending on the rule and response, it can block messages, send moderator alerts, or apply timeouts for custom keyword rules.

| Question | Personal language filter | Server AutoMod |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls it? | The individual Discord user | Server moderators with the required permissions |
| What does it affect? | Messages the user receives in supported conversations | Messages posted in the server |
| Can you add custom words? | No; the list is preset by Discord | Yes; moderators can make custom keyword rules |
| Can you edit it on mobile? | Yes, if the language-filter setting is available to your account | No; Discord says AutoMod rule updates cannot currently be made on mobile |
For custom server rules, Discord documents terms and phrases, exemptions, wildcard matching, and regex patterns. Rule updates require Manage Server or Administrator permission and must be made on desktop, according to Discord’s AutoMod FAQ, displayed as updated June 15, 2026. Regex guidance is in Discord’s Filter Messages Using Regular Expressions (Regex).

A word you dislike still appears: The personal filter only uses Discord’s preset list. You cannot add a term yourself; server moderators may instead configure relevant AutoMod rules for their server.

You need messages blocked for everyone in a server: Use server AutoMod rather than the personal filter. A moderator must configure the rules, and Discord currently requires rule updates from desktop.
