Use Discord AutoMod alone when built-in keyword, spam, mention-spam and alert controls cover the violations your server actually sees. Add a moderation bot when moderators need a broader command-based workflow, warning and case history, configurable logs, or a rule that AutoMod cannot express. A hybrid setup is sensible when native filters handle routine abuse and a bot fills one clearly defined gap.
Whichever route you choose, treat filtering as one layer of moderation. Keep human review, clear rules and an incident plan, and inspect every app’s permissions and privacy terms before authorizing it.

Do not add a bot merely because another server uses one. Every additional app creates another configuration surface, role, permission grant and privacy decision.
What Discord AutoMod does
AutoMod is Discord’s built-in system for detecting and blocking unwanted messages before they are posted. Discord says it is currently available for all servers in its AutoMod FAQ, updated June 15, 2026 (Discord AutoMod FAQ).

Filters you can configure
- Commonly flagged words: ready-made lists for frequent problem terms.
- Custom keywords: your own words and phrases, including links, emoji, punctuation and symbols. Custom rules can also examine member usernames and server nicknames.
- Spam-content filtering: a built-in detector for likely spam.
- Mention-spam limits: controls for messages that would notify an excessive number of members.
Custom keyword rules can detect terms in any language. Discord’s FAQ says the commonly flagged word lists and the spam-content filter are currently English-only, so a multilingual server should not assume that the ready-made filters cover its conversations.
Actions AutoMod can take
For a rule, you can configure AutoMod to block a flagged message and send an alert to a private moderator channel. Where the relevant action is available, it can also time out the user. The alert gives moderators a chance to review context instead of silently discarding every borderline message.
Keyword-rule mechanics that matter in practice
Rule editing requires the Manage Server permission or Administrator, and Discord’s FAQ says administrators configure AutoMod on desktop. A custom rule supports up to 1,000 terms, with each term limited to 60 characters. A multiword term must match the exact phrase. Discord also documents asterisk wildcards for prefix, suffix or anywhere matching. Because Discord can change these controls, verify the current behavior in the AutoMod editor before building a large rule set.

AutoMod is a filter, not a complete case-management system. Discord explicitly warns that its spam-content filter is imperfect. It may miss spam that moderators recognize, including nonsensical words spread across multiple messages or channels and repeated “copy/pasta” posts. A false positive can also interrupt legitimate discussion, so alerts, exemptions and human review remain important.
What a moderation bot can add
A third-party bot is most valuable when the missing capability is a workflow rather than one more blocked word. Discord’s safety guidance describes bot-related uses such as anti-spam, text filters, anti-raid controls, user filters and manual moderation systems. The useful question is not “Which bot is popular?” but “Which specific moderation task cannot be handled cleanly with native tools?”
Commands and a connected moderation process
Bots can give moderators a shared set of commands for actions such as warnings, timeouts, kicks or bans, depending on the app and the permissions it receives. They may attach an infraction reason, preserve a case number, and make the same process available to every moderator instead of relying on ad hoc messages.
Logs and warning history
As a documented example, Dyno’s official Automod documentation describes rules for banned words, spam, spoilers and other configured conditions (Dyno Automod documentation). Its logs documentation describes moderation-action logs, AutoMod trigger logs, command logs and warning logs (Dyno logs documentation). Those are vendor-documented capabilities, not a claim that every bot provides the same modules or retention.

Detailed logs help when a moderator needs to answer “What happened, when, and who acted?” They also introduce retention, access-control and privacy questions. Decide which channel receives each log, who can read it, and how long the team needs the record.
More configurable conditions
Some bots combine several trigger types or allow staff to chain an action with a warning, role change or log entry. This can be useful for a server with specialized rules, but complexity increases the chance that two systems will trigger on the same message or apply different punishments. Document which tool owns each rule before enabling overlapping modules.
Permissions, role hierarchy and privacy
A bot cannot moderate what its role is not allowed to moderate. Dyno’s requirements, for example, include a role positioned above the members it must act on and permissions such as Manage Roles, Ban Members and Timeout Members, depending on the enabled features. These are Dyno’s documented requirements, not universal requirements for every app.
Discord app permissions can include creating or editing channels, sending messages, connecting to voice and viewing the audit log. An administrator can inspect and change the app’s role under Server Settings. Grant only the permissions required for the named use case; a bot that only posts alerts should not automatically receive ban or channel-management authority.

Discord advises administrators to understand how an app may use data available to it. Do not assume that two bots with similar feature lists request, store or process the same information.
How to choose for your server
Evaluate the decision against these five questions before installing anything.
1. Coverage
List the actual violations from the last few weeks: unwanted terms, invite spam, repeated mentions, raids, spoilers, impersonation or something else. Configure AutoMod for patterns it can express, then identify the one remaining requirement. If you cannot name the missing requirement, a bot is probably adding maintenance rather than protection.

2. Moderator workflow
Ask whether staff need warnings, a shared command set, searchable case history or separate channels for action and trigger logs. If the answer is no, native blocking and alerts may be enough. If the answer is yes, compare bot documentation for exactly those functions rather than selecting by reputation.
3. False positives and exceptions
Decide which roles and channels should be exempt, how moderators will review an alert, and how a member can appeal an action. A filter that blocks a common technical term in a support channel may be worse than an alert-only rule. Test ordinary conversation, quotations, code snippets, links and multilingual text before enabling automatic punishment.
4. Setup and permission ownership
Assign a person or team to maintain rules, review alerts, update the bot and audit permissions. If nobody owns that work, the most sophisticated setup will decay. Keep a written map of each rule, its action, its exemption and its log destination.
5. Resilience
Consider what remains if an external bot is unavailable or misconfigured. Native AutoMod should continue handling the rules you have set, and moderators should know how to enable slowmode, lock channels or remove bad actors manually. Do not make a bot your only defense during a live incident.
Set up AutoMod step by step
- Use a desktop session. Discord’s FAQ specifies desktop configuration for AutoMod rule editing.
- Open your server settings. Use an account with Manage Server or Administrator.
- Open the AutoMod section and review the available commonly flagged word, spam-content and mention-spam controls.
- Add custom keyword rules. Enter exact words or phrases, remembering the 1,000-term and 60-character limits. Use the documented wildcard syntax only where it improves coverage.
- Choose an action. Start with message blocking and a private moderator alert for uncertain rules. Add a timeout only when the trigger is reliable and the action matches your server policy.
- Set sensible exemptions. Exempt trusted roles or channels only when there is a clear reason, such as a private moderation or testing channel.
- Test before publishing. Use harmless test terms and ordinary messages that resemble likely false positives. Confirm the alert reaches the intended moderator channel.
- Review after launch. Remove noisy terms, add missed variants and check alerts during normal activity rather than waiting for an incident.
For a multilingual community, put important terms in custom rules instead of relying on the English-only ready-made lists and spam-content filter. For usernames and nicknames, create a separate rule if that is the abuse pattern you need to control.

Add a moderation bot safely
- Write the gap down. For example: “We need warning history and an action log,” not “We need a bot.”
- Read the official feature and permission documentation. Confirm that the app supports the required trigger, action and log, and note which permissions each function needs.
- Review the authorization screen. Check requested server and channel access. Decline or remove permissions unrelated to the use case where Discord permits it.
- Install the bot with a controlled role. Place its role above the members it must moderate but below the highest administrative roles. Do not place it above roles it should never be able to change.
- Configure one module at a time. Start with logging or warnings, then add automated actions after staff understand the output.
- Define ownership and retention. Choose who can run commands, where logs go and when old records are removed.
- Run a staged test. Use a private test channel or temporary rule, verify the alert and action, then test an exception and a false-positive case.
- Recheck permissions after changes. Server-role edits, channel overrides and bot updates can alter what the app can do.
If a bot’s documentation does not clearly explain its data practices or permissions, that uncertainty is itself a reason to postpone authorization.
When a hybrid setup is the right answer
AutoMod plus a bot works when responsibilities are separated. A practical division is to let AutoMod block common keywords, mention spam and routine spam-content patterns, while the bot handles warnings, case history and moderator commands. Keep duplicate triggers disabled unless you deliberately want both systems to act.

Use alert-only behavior for rules that need context. Moderators can then see a possible violation, decide whether it is genuine, and record the action through the bot’s workflow. This reduces the chance that an overbroad native rule and an overbroad bot rule punish the same legitimate conversation.
Document a fallback: if the bot is offline, moderators should still have native alerts, slowmode and manual actions available. If AutoMod is misfiring, staff should know which rule to disable without turning off unrelated protections.
Handling raids and sudden spam
Discord’s raid guidance recommends using AutoMod alerts and mention-spam controls, adjusting rules as needed, enabling slowmode when message volume is high, and identifying and removing bad actors. The guidance was published July 28, 2023, so check the current Discord interface when following it.
For an uncertain wave, Discord specifically suggests an alert-only configuration so moderators can assess potential raiders before blocking messages. That is an operational choice, not a guarantee that AutoMod will prevent a raid. During the event:
- Move alerts to a private moderator channel that staff are watching.
- Use slowmode or restrict affected channels to reduce notification volume.
- Check whether the same terms, links or mention patterns are recurring and tune the rule narrowly.
- Remove confirmed bad actors and preserve the relevant logs.
- After the incident, review false positives and restore normal channel settings deliberately.
A bot can support this process with commands and logs, but an external service outage should not leave the server without a response plan.

Rules Screening controls onboarding rather than message filtering. Discord says it can require members to agree to server rules before they can talk in the server or send direct messages to other members. Its Rules Screening FAQ recommends the native feature over third-party role gates for this purpose because role gates do not protect members from direct messages and can confuse newcomers.
The trade-off is an extra joining step that may reduce the number of people who complete onboarding. Decide whether rule acceptance is worth that friction separately from the AutoMod-versus-bot choice.

Common scenarios
Small community with recurring invite spam
Start with AutoMod custom keywords, spam-content filtering and moderator alerts. Add a bot only if staff need warnings or a persistent action log. Keep the rule narrow enough that legitimate links are not blocked.
Large community with a rotating moderator team
Native filters can handle routine patterns, while a bot may justify its extra permissions by providing a shared warning and case workflow. Restrict command access and route logs to channels with a defined audience.
Multilingual server
Build custom keyword rules for the languages and phrases you actually moderate. Do not rely on the English-only common-word lists or spam-content filter. Test accents, punctuation and code-switching before enabling timeouts.

Use Rules Screening for agreement before participation. Installing a moderation bot solely to create a role gate adds complexity without solving the direct-message limitation Discord identifies.
Troubleshooting and maintenance
Messages are still getting through
- Check whether the rule matches the exact spelling, phrase or wildcard pattern.
- Confirm the rule is enabled and the relevant channel or role is not exempt.
- For spam, remember Discord’s warning that repeated or nonsensical content across multiple messages may evade detection.
- Use a moderator alert and manual action while you refine the rule.
Legitimate messages are blocked
- Review the exact term and any wildcard that broadens it.
- Exempt only the channel or role that genuinely needs the exception.
- Prefer alert-only handling for ambiguous patterns.
- Record the adjustment so another moderator understands why the rule changed.
The bot cannot take an action
- Check that the bot role is above the target member’s role.
- Verify the specific permission, such as Manage Roles, Ban Members or Timeout Members, is granted in the server and channel context.
- Inspect channel overrides and the app role under Server Settings.
- Re-read the bot’s current documentation; requirements differ by app and can change.
Moderators are overwhelmed by alerts
Consolidate alerts in one private channel, disable duplicate triggers and remove rules that generate no useful action. An alert is valuable only when someone can review it consistently.
Bottom line: match the tool to the gap
AutoMod is the lower-complexity baseline: it is native, available on all servers according to Discord’s June 15, 2026 FAQ, and covers many recurring keyword, spam and mention-abuse patterns. A moderation bot earns its place when it supplies a named capability such as warnings, detailed logs or a broader manual command workflow. Use both only when their responsibilities are clear, their permissions are limited and moderators have a fallback for outages and raids.
