You can donate cryptocurrency to a charity directly or contribute eligible assets to a donor-advised fund (DAF) and recommend grants from there. Before sending anything, confirm that the recipient accepts your exact asset on your intended network, then follow its official transfer instructions. In the United States, tax treatment depends on the asset’s holding period and your circumstances, so keep transaction records and obtain the required acknowledgment.
Choose a donation route before transferring crypto
There are two main ways to give crypto: send it to a charity that accepts it, or contribute it to a donor-advised fund sponsor that accepts eligible digital assets. A DAF is an account at a sponsoring charitable organization; after contributing, you can recommend grants to eligible charities under that sponsor’s rules. Acceptance, approval, and transfer procedures vary by recipient.
| Route | How it works | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Direct charity donation | You transfer an accepted asset to the charity using its instructions. | Whether it accepts your asset and network, its transfer steps, and how it provides acknowledgment. America’s Charities describes cryptocurrency fundraising tools available to its members through The Giving Block, but this does not establish that a particular charity currently uses that provider. America’s Charities |
| Donor-advised fund | You contribute an eligible asset to the sponsoring charity and may recommend grants to eligible organizations. | The sponsor’s acceptance review, supported assets and networks, procedures, and grant rules. Fidelity Charitable describes a Giving Account route for certain cryptocurrencies. Fidelity Charitable: cryptocurrency donations Fidelity Charitable: accepted contributions |
| Cash or another accepted asset | You give cash or an asset the recipient accepts instead of acquiring crypto for the donation. | Whether this better fits your situation. The cited sources do not quantify acquisition costs or establish that buying crypto to donate is advantageous. |
Compare the route’s eligibility rules, supported asset and network, minimums or approval requirements, transfer process, fees and any spread, custody and liquidation timing, receipt process, and grant flexibility. These terms are recipient- and provider-specific; confirm them directly before making a transfer.
Confirm the asset and network, then transfer carefully
A wallet address alone is not enough to establish that a transfer is correct. The recipient must support the specific coin or token and the network you plan to use. Fidelity Charitable warns that sending the wrong asset or using the wrong network can result in loss; its instructions apply to its own process, not automatically to other charities. - Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Ask the recipient first. Confirm that it currently accepts your exact asset and network, and ask about any minimum, approval, or account requirements.
- Get instructions from the recipient’s official channel. Use the address and process it provides for your contribution. Do not rely on an address from an old message, an unofficial directory, or a third party.
- Check the transfer details before approving. Match the asset and network to the recipient’s instructions. Do not substitute a wrapped, staked, or similarly named asset unless the recipient explicitly says it accepts that form.
- Follow the recipient’s security guidance. Fidelity Charitable suggests a small test contribution and cautions donors using its process against different networks, Layer 2 networks, and obscuring an asset’s origin. Ask another recipient whether it recommends a test transfer and what it will accept.
- Save the transaction information. Keep the transaction ID, date, amount, asset, network, and records that identify the specific units transferred, along with the recipient’s confirmation and acknowledgment.
If a transfer appears to have gone to the wrong address or network, contact the recipient through its official support channel promptly. Do not assume a blockchain transfer can be reversed or recovered.
Understand the general U.S. tax treatment
The IRS says, “If you donate virtual currency to a charitable organization described in Internal Revenue Code Section 170(c), you will not recognize income, gain, or loss from the donation.” That statement does not guarantee that every transfer qualifies for a charitable deduction. Eligibility and the amount you may claim depend on the recipient, the asset, and your tax facts. IRS: Frequently asked questions on virtual currency transactions

For a qualifying deduction, the IRS describes different general valuation rules according to how long you held the virtual currency:

- Held for more than one year: The deduction is generally the fair market value at the time of donation.
- Held for one year or less: The deduction is generally limited to the lesser of your basis or the fair market value at contribution.
These are general rules, not a promise of a particular tax result. If the holding period, valuation, recipient eligibility, or reporting requirements are unclear, consult a qualified tax professional before filing.

Keep the acknowledgment and records your deduction may require
Retain the charity’s acknowledgment along with records supporting what you transferred and when. The IRS describes these requirements for donors claiming deductions:
- Deduction of $250 or more: Obtain a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the charity. A charity may assist by providing one.
- Noncash contribution deduction over $5,000: The charity generally must sign Form 8283 to acknowledge receipt when you present the form for signature.
- Property disposed of within three years: In some cases, the charity must file Form 8282 and provide a copy to the donor.
The IRS also describes documenting specific virtual currency units through unique identifiers or records establishing transaction information for the units held in an account, wallet, or address. Keep those records with your transfer details and acknowledgment so you can support the contribution you report.

Charities: verify acceptance and operational details
A nonprofit considering crypto donations should decide how it will handle acceptance, custody, conversion, receipts, and recordkeeping before publishing a donation address. A fundraising processor is one possible route, but a category-level mention does not show that a specific charity uses that service or that it is available under the charity’s current terms.

A sponsoring organization that accepts digital assets may be another option for a charity’s donors who prefer a DAF route. The sponsor’s rules determine what it accepts and how grants may be recommended; a charity should not imply that a donor can send crypto to it directly if the donation must instead go through a sponsor.
Check local rules if you are outside the United States
The tax and documentation guidance above is U.S.-specific and based on IRS materials. Donors and charities in other countries should check their local tax law, charity eligibility rules, and transfer requirements rather than applying U.S. deduction thresholds or procedures.
