The Dimensity 9400e and Dimensity 8500 differ in CPU design, GPU, and wireless support, but available benchmark scores do not establish a decisive winner. “Dimensity 8500 Extreme” is the name used in a Motorola Edge 70 Pro 5G listing; MediaTek’s official product page calls the chip Dimensity 8500, and the available sources do not establish a separately specified Extreme variant.
At a glance: the main differences
- CPU: The 9400e combines Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 cores. The 8500 uses eight Cortex-A725 cores.
- Graphics: MediaTek lists an Immortalis-G720 MC12 GPU for the 9400e and a Mali-G720 MC8 GPU for the 8500. These specifications alone do not establish real-world gaming performance.
- Wireless: The 9400e platform lists Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0; the 8500 lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
- Benchmarks: Published scores come from different handset entries and setups, so they are not a controlled processor-only comparison.
Why “Dimensity 8500 Extreme” needs a naming caveat
MediaTek’s official Dimensity 8500 page names the platform Dimensity 8500. The Motorola Edge 70 Pro 5G listing at 91mobiles uses “Dimensity 8500 Extreme.” The sources reviewed do not establish a separate official MediaTek specification page or distinct silicon specification for an Extreme SKU. Treat the suffix as a listing name, not proof of a different architecture, chip bin, or guaranteed performance uplift.
MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9400e on May 14, 2025. The announcement described it as an addition to the company’s mobile-platform family; it does not provide a direct performance comparison with the 8500.

What the specifications mean in practice
CPU core layouts are different, but clock speed is not a verdict
The 9400e has four Cortex-X4 cores alongside four Cortex-A720 cores. The 8500 uses Cortex-A725 cores across all eight CPU positions, with different listed maximum frequencies by core group. Because the core designs differ, comparing only the highest GHz figure does not show which chip is faster in an application or under sustained load.
GPU names and core counts do not predict sustained gaming
The listed graphics configurations differ—Immortalis-G720 MC12 on the 9400e and Mali-G720 MC8 on the 8500—but these model names and core counts are not a game test. A phone’s cooling, power limits, software, and game settings affect sustained frame rates and performance.

Wireless and cellular figures are platform ceilings
The 9400e lists newer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth versions, while MediaTek’s 8500 page lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. Actual phone support depends on the handset’s implementation. Similarly, the stated cellular downlink maxima are manufacturer platform capability claims, not promises of speeds a user will see; network coverage, carrier configuration, and local conditions matter.

Camera, display, and AI support are not handset guarantees
Sensor resolution, video modes, display refresh rates, and AI capabilities describe what the platforms support. A phone maker can choose different camera sensors, screens, or software features, so the chip’s ceiling should not be mistaken for a particular phone’s specification. The NPU model numbers alone also do not establish relative performance in a specific AI app.

Reported benchmark scores: handset results, not a matched test
91mobiles reports the following results. These are publisher-reported figures associated with devices or device testing, not scores from a controlled head-to-head using otherwise identical phones.
| Chip or listing label | Device context | AnTuTu | Geekbench single-core | Geekbench multi-core |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dimensity 8500 Extreme | Motorola Edge 70 Pro 5G listing | 2,194,258 | 1,749 | 6,864 |
| Dimensity 9400e | 91mobiles chip page; figures draw on real-world testing of devices powered by the chip | 2,125,733 | 2,219 | 7,308 |
91mobiles describes the 9400e AnTuTu figure as the highest it recorded for a device running that chip. That is a report about its recorded results, not a guaranteed score for every 9400e phone. The comparison entries do not establish matched devices, software, memory configurations, cooling, power modes, or benchmark versions. Those variables can affect results, so the figures do not prove that either processor is categorically faster.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
How to make a useful buying comparison
Choose between actual phones rather than relying on the chipset label alone. For a meaningful performance comparison, look for results from the same benchmark version on matched or closely controlled handsets, then consider sustained performance and efficiency in addition to peak scores. For a purchase decision, compare the regional phone variants’ price, cooling, battery, software support, and availability; the platform specifications and benchmark entries above do not establish those handset-level factors.
