Neither DigitalOcean nor OVHcloud is the better cloud host for every workload. Choose by comparing the same compute requirements in the region you need, then add networking, storage, managed services and support terms to the monthly cost. DigitalOcean publishes a simple entry-level Droplet price and a free Kubernetes control plane; OVHcloud offers a broad Public Cloud catalog and free and paid managed Kubernetes tiers. Those published details do not establish which provider will perform better for your application.
DigitalOcean vs OVHcloud: Which is better?
The better choice depends on your workload, target locations and how much infrastructure you want managed. DigitalOcean may suit a workload that fits its published Droplet sizes and available regions, or a team that wants a free Kubernetes control plane with an optional paid high-availability tier. OVHcloud may suit a workload whose required instance, location, private-network design or managed-service option fits its catalog and total cost.
These are conditional fits, not a universal ranking. The provider pages describe products, prices and contractual terms; they do not provide a like-for-like performance test or establish an objective winner for support quality or ease of use.

Compare a defined configuration, not each provider’s lowest advertised figure. Match CPU capacity and class, memory, storage type and size, and expected outbound traffic. Then include public IPs, backups or snapshots, load balancers, taxes and any applicable discounts or commitments.

| Cost item | DigitalOcean | OVHcloud |
|---|---|---|
| Entry compute example | Basic Droplet starts at $4/month for 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer, according to its 2026 pricing page. This is an entry plan, not an equivalent match for every OVHcloud instance family. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing | No single comparable entry price is established here. The Public Cloud price depends on the instance family, selected location and services. OVHcloud Public Cloud pricing |
| Compute billing detail | DigitalOcean says Droplets move to per-second billing on January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher. Check the live plan and region for the applicable price. | The cited price catalog does not establish a directly comparable billing minimum or matched monthly instance cost. |
| Public IPv4 and outbound traffic | Include the services and traffic your configuration requires; the cited entry-plan figure includes 500 GiB transfer. | The pricing page says public IPv4 may be billed separately for relevant instances. Outbound public traffic is included at most locations, with Asia-Pacific exceptions; check the selected location’s terms. |
Is OVHcloud cheaper than DigitalOcean?
There is no supported general answer. The $4/month DigitalOcean Droplet is a small published entry configuration, not a matched comparison against every OVHcloud instance. OVHcloud’s final price depends on the chosen instance, location and services. Build a monthly estimate for the same workload on both platforms and make traffic, storage, IP, backup, tax and discount assumptions visible.
What do the Kubernetes control planes cost?
The control-plane price is only one part of a Kubernetes bill. Worker nodes and related resources, including storage and load balancers, are charged separately on both platforms.

| Provider and tier | Control-plane price | Published service level and limits |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean managed Kubernetes | Base control plane: free. Optional high availability: $40/month. | The cited pricing page identifies separately charged nodes and related services; it does not establish a directly comparable SLA figure here. DigitalOcean Kubernetes pricing |
| OVHcloud Managed Kubernetes Free | Free tier | 99.5% SLO, 400 MiB etcd quota and up to 100 nodes. OVHcloud Managed Kubernetes |
| OVHcloud Managed Kubernetes Standard | $0.099 per cluster per hour for the control plane | 8 GiB etcd quota and up to 500 nodes; listed SLA is 99.99% in 3-AZ regions and 99.9% in 1-AZ regions. Nodes and other resources cost extra. Currency and regional pricing may vary by locale. |
For a useful cost comparison, estimate the same node count and sizes, storage, public IPs and load-balancing needs. Also confirm which tier and service-level terms apply in the region you intend to use.

Which provider has the right locations and networking?
DigitalOcean locations
DigitalOcean’s regional availability page listed 16 datacenters across 13 regions when last verified on October 1, 2026. Treat that as a dated provider-published count, not a guarantee that every product is available in every listed location. DigitalOcean VPCs are regional; separate VPCs can be privately connected using VPC peering. DigitalOcean regional availability DigitalOcean VPC peering

OVHcloud locations
OVHcloud publishes product availability by location across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. Check the matrix for the specific Public Cloud product and region rather than relying on a broad regional footprint. Its private networking uses vRack and supports single-region or multi-region configurations; multi-region connectivity depends on a compatible shared configuration. OVHcloud Public Cloud availability OVHcloud vRack networking
For either provider, region choice can affect latency to users, data placement and charges. Verify that the required compute, storage, networking and managed services are all available in the intended location. For OVHcloud, pay particular attention to the Asia-Pacific outbound-traffic exception.

How should you compare managed databases and SLAs?
DigitalOcean’s managed database catalog includes PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Kafka and caching options, with different editions and node types. Its pricing page gives a PostgreSQL Standard example of $15.15/month for a 1 GiB, 1-vCPU cluster before selected storage charges; this is an example, not a complete database bill. DigitalOcean managed database pricing
DigitalOcean’s Managed Databases SLA, updated June 3, 2025, sets a threshold of less than 99.95% for clusters with standby nodes and less than 99.5% for clusters without standby nodes before service credits may apply, subject to exclusions and the claims procedure. These are contractual thresholds for specified configurations, not a prediction of application uptime or evidence of comparative reliability. DigitalOcean service level agreement

When comparing managed databases, match the database engine and version, capacity, storage, redundancy and operational features. The figures above do not establish an equivalent OVHcloud database configuration or total cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide for your workload
- Set the requirements. Write down CPU class and capacity, memory, storage, traffic, database or Kubernetes needs, user locations and any data-residency requirements.
- Confirm product availability. Check the exact service in the target region on each provider’s availability pages. Include any private-network connection needed between regions.
- Price equivalent deployments. Add compute, storage, public IPs, transfer, backups, load balancers, managed-service tiers and taxes. Keep any discount or commitment separate from the standard estimate.
- Check service terms. Read the SLA scope, exclusions, configuration requirements and credit-claim process for the specific product you plan to use.
- Test the application where it will run. Deploy a representative workload in the target region and measure its behavior; published catalog prices and service descriptions cannot predict application performance.
When DigitalOcean may fit better
- Your workload fits a published Droplet size and the required datacenter and services are available.
- You want a free Kubernetes control plane and have evaluated whether the optional HA tier and separately billed resources fit your needs.
- Its regional VPC and peering approach suits your network design.
When OVHcloud may fit better
- A specific OVHcloud instance family or regional offering is a closer match for your compute or location requirements.
- Its vRack configuration fits your single-region or compatible multi-region network design.
- The managed Kubernetes tier, limits and regional service level match your operational requirements after node and resource costs are included.
Is one provider faster or more reliable?
The cited provider information does not establish a like-for-like benchmark for a specified workload, nor actual uptime history that supports an overall reliability ranking. Do not infer that one is categorically faster from product catalogs, region counts or SLA percentages. Test the application in its intended region and evaluate any SLA only within its stated scope and exclusions.
