A digital video format is the set of rules and structure used to encode, organize, and store or deliver video and related data. In everyday use, “format” often means the file’s container, while the video and audio codecs inside it determine how those streams are compressed and decoded. That distinction explains why an MP4 file is not necessarily using one particular codec—and why its extension alone cannot guarantee playback.
What is a digital video format?
The phrase can describe a complete digital-video setup: a file structure plus the encoded picture, sound, and associated data it carries. More precisely, a video file commonly has a container that organizes its tracks and metadata, and separate codecs that encode and decode the video and audio streams.
The container specification describes how the file’s different elements coexist. A codec (short for coder-decoder) describes how an individual media stream is encoded and decoded, often using compression. GS1’s explanation of media formats similarly distinguishes compression of video and audio from the container that holds the resulting streams: GS1 product-video guidance.
Is MP4 a codec or a file format?
MP4 is a file format, commonly called a container—not a codec. ISO/IEC 14496-14:2020 defines the MP4 file format as derived from the ISO Base Media File Format. ISO’s abstract says: “This document defines the MP4 file format, as derived from the ISO Base Media File format.” See the ISO/IEC 14496-14:2020 standard page.

MPEG-4 is a broader standards suite, not another name for MP4. Its parts address distinct specifications: Part 10 is Advanced Video Coding (AVC), Part 12 specifies the ISO Base Media File Format, and Part 14 specifies the MP4 file format. The MPEG-4 standards overview lists these separately.
A filename ending in .mp4 identifies the container family, but it does not reveal every video or audio codec and feature inside the file. A player must support both the container and the codecs or features used within it. For a technical description of how container specifications organize elements, see the SWGDE overview of digital multimedia evidence.

What properties describe a video file?
- Container or file format: the structure holding video, audio, subtitles, and related metadata. MP4 is one example.
- Video codec and audio codec: the methods used to encode, compress, and decode the picture and sound streams. They are separate choices and may differ within the same container.
- Resolution: the number of pixels in each frame, usually expressed as width by height. More pixels can require more data, all else being equal, but do not by themselves guarantee a better-looking result.
- Frame rate: the number of frames per second, describing how frequently the video samples motion and its cadence.
- Bitrate: the rate of encoded data. It affects storage and bandwidth needs and, along with the codec and the complexity of the footage, influences quality. A higher bitrate alone does not guarantee better-looking video.
- Compatibility: whether the intended player or service supports the container, codecs, and relevant features in the file.
GS1’s product-video guidance discusses resolution, bitrate, and file-size considerations, while noting that codec efficiency and video complexity also matter. Those properties describe different trade-offs rather than one simple quality score.

There is no universal best format without knowing where the video will be played or uploaded, the required quality and file size, and which codecs and features that destination accepts. Check the destination’s current requirements, then verify the container and the video and audio codecs—not just the extension.

For its specific product-video use case, GS1 names MPEG-4 Part 14 (MP4) as the preferred format and says it is supported by a wide range of platforms and devices. That is a scoped recommendation, not a guarantee that every MP4 file will play on every device. ISO lists ISO/IEC 14496-14:2020, Edition 3, as published on January 27, 2020; on the ISO page checked October 7, 2026, its status was under review after a review process that closed June 5, 2025. Standard status can change.

How to check whether a video will work
- Start with the destination. Find the current upload, playback, or ingest requirements for the specific service or device.
- Identify the container and codecs. Do not infer codec support from an extension such as
.mp4; inspect the file’s video and audio stream details. - Check the required playback properties. Confirm resolution, frame rate, bitrate or file-size limits, and any needed subtitles or multiple audio tracks against the destination’s requirements.
- Test the actual file when compatibility matters. A container may be accepted while a codec or feature inside it is not, so validate the combination on the intended platform.
