A digital twin used by a long-running AI agent needs more than a snapshot of current conditions. It needs a durable, inspectable history of facts, sources, timing, relationships, uncertainty, and earlier recommendations. Without that context, an agent can lose track of why its view changed—and operators may be left to reconstruct the explanation from scattered records.

Why current state alone is not enough

A digital twin can represent the present condition of a physical asset or operation, but decisions often depend on how that condition came about. A maintenance recommendation, for example, may rely on sensor readings, equipment relationships, service history, operator notes, and a previous intervention. If an agent sees only the latest readings, it may have to reconstruct that context every time—or miss it altogether.

In an August 27, 2026 InfoWorld opinion article, Tobie Morgan Hitchcock argues that digital twins are evolving from virtual counterparts into environments where software may recommend or guide actions. That is an interpretation of the direction of the field, not a description of every digital-twin deployment. His central point is that more consequential decisions make coherent history and context increasingly important.

The useful distinction is between state and memory. State describes what the system currently represents. Memory preserves what was observed or believed before, where it came from, how it related to other information, and what decisions followed. An agent working repeatedly in an operational environment needs both.

What an AI agent should remember

Memory should be more than a collection of retrieved text. For an operational twin, it can include the evidence and context needed to interpret a fact later.

  • Source: whether a fact came from a sensor, maintenance record, operator note, external input, or another system.
  • Timing: when the information applied, when it was recorded or learned, and the period for which it was considered valid.
  • Confidence and uncertainty: whether a value is measured, inferred, incomplete, or disputed.
  • Relationships: how a component, event, or observation connects to equipment, processes, constraints, and other entities in the twin.
  • History: previous observations, interventions, recommendations, and information that later superseded an earlier belief.
  • Reasoning trace: which retrieved records, relationships, and assumptions informed a recommendation.

These details make it possible to investigate not only what an agent recommends, but why it reached that recommendation and what changed since the previous one.

Why time needs more than one timestamp

Operational facts can have several different times attached to them. A system should not collapse them into a single timestamp if it needs to explain past decisions.

  • Valid time: when a condition was true in the real world. A component may have been in a particular state during a specific interval.
  • Record or observation time: when a system captured or stored the information.
  • Belief time: when the agent or organization learned, accepted, or acted on the information.

Those times can diverge. A sensor record might arrive late; an operator might correct a maintenance entry days after the work; or an agent might initially rely on an incomplete report. Keeping the distinctions lets an operator ask both “What do we now believe was true then?” and “What information was available when the recommendation was made?”

When new evidence conflicts with an older fact, preserving both with their sources and timing is more informative than silently overwriting the earlier value. The earlier belief may explain a past action even if it is no longer considered correct.

How memory makes recommendations inspectable

When a recommendation changes, operators need a way to trace the change. A useful record connects the recommendation to the evidence available at the time: retrieved documents, relevant twin relationships, previous interventions, and assumptions. That record helps distinguish a changed physical condition from a newly discovered fact, a corrected record, or a different interpretation of existing evidence.

Without those links, teams may have to piece together a rationale from separate application logs, document stores, and operational systems. A durable trace does not guarantee that an agent’s reasoning is correct, but it gives people a basis for examining the inputs and assumptions behind it.

Memory design: prompt, separate store, or twin data?

Hitchcock contrasts three broad approaches. His preference is an architectural position, not a measured finding that one design is best for every organization.

Relying on the prompt window

Putting more context into an agent’s prompt can help with a particular interaction, but a prompt is not a durable operational history. It does not by itself provide a governed record of how facts changed over time or what evidence supported earlier decisions.

Adding separate memory systems

Teams can use distinct systems for vectors, key-value data, graphs, or documents. Those tools may suit particular retrieval and storage needs, but splitting memory across systems can create synchronization, access-control, and governance seams. Whether that burden is acceptable depends on the workload and existing architecture.

Treating memory as first-class twin data

Hitchcock’s proposed direction is to keep agent memory and twin data close under shared governance and transaction rules, using a substrate capable of representing structured, graph, document, vector, and temporal information. He writes, “The more durable approach is to treat agent memory as first-class twin data.” This is his recommendation as an InfoWorld contributor and CEO and co-founder of SurrealDB, not a standards mandate or proof that one database design outperforms alternatives.

How to evaluate an architecture

There is no workload-independent answer in the cited opinion article. A team comparing designs should assess the needs that determine whether memory can be trusted, retrieved, and operated reliably.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Provenance and auditability: Can users identify the source of a fact and inspect the evidence behind a recommendation?
  • Time-aware history: Can the system represent when a fact applied separately from when it was recorded or believed?
  • Retrieval needs: Does the workload require structured queries, relationship traversal, document retrieval, semantic search, or a mix?
  • Consistency boundaries: Which updates must be atomic, and where can eventual synchronization be acceptable?
  • Memory scope and access: Which information is local to one agent, shared across agents, or restricted to particular users and systems?
  • Integration burden: How much synchronization and governance work comes with the chosen system boundaries?
  • Latency and scale: Can the design meet the actual response-time and data-volume requirements?
  • Operational ownership: Which team is responsible for reliability, access policy, retention, and recovery?

The article offers qualitative reasoning rather than measured comparisons across vendors or architectures. Its case for a shared substrate should therefore be weighed against concrete workload requirements, not treated as a universal rule.

What ISO 23247 contributes—and what it does not

ISO 23247 is a framework for manufacturing digital twins. ISO 23247-1:2021 covers overview and general principles, while ISO 23247-2:2021 provides a reference architecture. The 2026 parts address adjacent system-level concerns: Part 5 covers a digital thread for creating, connecting, managing, and maintaining manufacturing twins across lifecycle stages; Part 6 addresses composition, including integrated, unified, and federated interoperability approaches. See the ISO 23247-1:2021, ISO 23247-2:2021, ISO 23247-5:2026, and ISO 23247-6:2026 pages for their scope.

These standards provide context for architecture, information exchange, digital threads, and composition. They do not prescribe persistent AI-agent memory or endorse one database substrate.

What the evidence supports

Hitchcock’s case is a useful architectural argument for preserving context and history in decision-oriented digital twins. It is not a benchmark demonstrating that a unified data system performs better than a polyglot architecture. The cited article reports that 62% of surveyed C-suite executives said they got immense value from digital twins, attributing the figure to a 2024 Hexagon survey; that number is secondary reporting, not independently verified here against the original survey publication.

For teams building or assessing a twin, the durable-memory principle is most relevant when agents make repeated decisions and people need to audit how those decisions were reached. The specific storage design remains a choice to make against the system’s data, governance, consistency, retrieval, and operating requirements.
