Digital Realty says construction has begun on KIX15, a planned 24 MW data center at its KIX Campus in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture. The company expects the facility to begin service in Q4 2028; that is a target, not a confirmed opening date.
What is KIX15?
KIX15 is a planned commercial data center intended for organizations that need colocation, interconnection, cloud access, or infrastructure for AI workloads. It is not a consumer AI product. Digital Realty announced the start of construction on October 7, 2026, and identifies KIX15 as the fifth data center at the KIX Campus. Digital Realty’s announcement describes the project and its intended role.
Where is the facility, and who is developing it?
KIX15 is being built at the KIX Campus in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, in Japan’s Kansai region. The developer, MC Digital Realty (MCDR), is a 50/50 joint venture between Digital Realty and Mitsubishi Corporation. MCDR’s Japanese announcement gives local project details, including a stated floor area of 17,672.49 m² and a seismic-isolated structure with one basement level and three floors above ground.
How large is KIX15, and when is it expected to open?
The planned IT/server power capacity is 24 MW, according to Digital Realty and MCDR. The companies say they expect service to begin in Q4 2028. Construction commencement and the target date are company-announced milestones; the opening remains prospective, not a confirmed operating date.

What cooling and connectivity are planned?
Hybrid cooling
The companies describe a hybrid air- and liquid-cooling design. This is a planned feature; the announcements do not provide independent operating results or detail the specific cooling configuration.
Platform and network access
Digital Realty says KIX15 will join PlatformDIGITAL and describes connectivity through ServiceFabric and multiple network providers. These are announced platform and service plans, not evidence of a particular customer connection or signed customer commitment at KIX15.

What does the project mean for MCDR’s Japan portfolio?
MCDR expects that, upon KIX15’s completion, its Japan portfolio will comprise 10 data centers with approximately 220 MW of aggregate IT capacity. The approximately 220 MW figure is a company projection for the portfolio after completion, not KIX15’s capacity alone or an independently audited total. MCDR presents the project as part of its Kansai AI Infrastructure Co-Creation Project.

The announcements identify hyperscalers, cloud service providers, and companies deploying AI infrastructure as intended customer groups, but do not disclose pricing, confirmed customers, signed capacity, or when colocation space will be available. They also do not establish comparative performance or superiority over other facilities. Digital Realty’s release cautions that forward-looking statements involve risks and actual outcomes may differ from plans.
