A digital isolator transfers logic signals across an electrical isolation barrier without a conductive signal path between its two sides. To choose one, first establish the isolation class and operating conditions required by your system; then match channel direction, signal performance, supplies, output behavior and package to the design. A digital isolator carries signals, not necessarily power, and a headline voltage rating alone does not establish that an end product is safe or compliant.

What a digital isolator does

A digital isolator has a transmitter on one side of a high-voltage barrier and a receiver on the other. The transmitter encodes or couples an input signal across the barrier; the receiver reconstructs it as a digital output. The intended result is to block dc and unwanted ac current between system sections while allowing information to pass.

Texas Instruments describes the general function this way: “Isolation is a means of preventing dc and unwanted ac currents between two parts of a system, while allowing signal and power transfer between those two parts.” That description does not mean every digital isolator transfers power: many devices require separate supplies on both sides, and power may need its own isolated converter.

How signals cross the barrier

Digital isolators use different signaling and coupling methods, so one family’s architecture should not be treated as a definition of the whole category. Texas Instruments’ Digital Isolator Design Guide (Rev. G, September 2023) describes two approaches used in its product families:

Edge-based signaling

In the guide’s edge-based example, input transitions are conveyed as differential pulses. A high-frequency path carries faster transitions, while a low-frequency path can preserve slower signals. TI gives example ranges of 100 kbps to 150 Mbps for the high-frequency channel and dc to 100 kbps for the low-frequency path. These are examples for the described architecture, not universal limits or guarantees for digital isolators generally.

On-off keying

In TI’s on-off keying (OOK) approach, the input bit stream modulates a signal that is coupled across the barrier and recovered by receiver circuitry. Other vendors describe capacitive or transformer coupling; optocouplers instead use light from LEDs. Architecture can affect signal behavior, integration, size, power and other design characteristics. Compare the exact candidate datasheets rather than assuming one method is always superior.

Choose the device in this order

  1. Set the isolation requirement. Determine whether the application needs functional, basic or reinforced isolation, and identify its applicable product-safety standards, working voltage and transient conditions. Confirm the selected part’s certifications and conditions of use rather than relying on a single withstand-voltage figure.
  2. Map signals to channels. Count the signals that must cross the barrier and mark the direction of each one. Channel count and direction are specific to the package and part-number variant; a family name alone may not reveal the configuration you need.
  3. Check signal performance. Compare data rate, propagation delay, channel-to-channel skew, pulse-width distortion and common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) against the actual interface and switching environment.
  4. Match electrical and mechanical details. Verify input logic levels, the supply range on each side, output behavior when an input signal or supply is lost, package, and board constraints. For example, TI’s ISO774x materials say variants without the F suffix default high on input power or signal loss, while F variants default low. Confirm the exact device datasheet before using that behavior in a fail-safe design.
  5. Account for isolated-side power. Establish whether the isolated section already has an appropriate supply. If it does not, plan a separate isolated power source or select a device that integrates isolated power; evaluate the signal and power paths together.
  6. Validate the end-product design. Check the exact part’s current datasheet and safety certificates, then assess the required working conditions and board-level spacing in the context of the end product. Component ratings do not certify the complete equipment.

What “flexible” means in practice

Flexibility means the market includes multiple configurations—not that a single device can be freely reconfigured or substituted for another. A design may need a different channel count, direction pattern, isolation class, output default or power arrangement, and those choices can point to different parts.

For example, TI identifies ISO7761 as a six-channel family and ISO774x as a quad-channel family. These examples illustrate different channel-count options; they are not interchangeable recommendations. Use the exact device datasheet to confirm direction mapping, ratings, certification and other variant-specific features.

Isolation is not the same as isolated power

A digital isolator’s signal barrier separates the signal paths; it does not necessarily supply the isolated-side circuit. The two sides may have separate grounds and supply rails. If the far side needs power, provide an isolated supply or choose a product with integrated isolated power, and ensure the power path preserves the system’s intended isolation as well.

Keep the safety claim tied to the application

Isolation can help address ground-loop or noise problems, but functional isolation for noise control is not equivalent to certified protection against electric shock. The required isolation classification, working voltage, transient capability and creepage and clearance depend on the end product and applicable standards. A device’s advertised isolation voltage, by itself, cannot establish that the finished design is safe.

Vendor documentation is useful for understanding a particular family’s architecture and specifications, but it is not an independent category-wide comparison. Choose from current datasheets and certifications for the exact device and verify the end-system requirements separately.
