GOG is the clearest choice if you want both repeat downloads and a separately stored installer. Its support pages describe unlimited redownloads and downloadable offline backup installers, while its DRM-free policy keeps Galaxy optional for single-player offline play. Epic Games Store supports offline launching for some single-player games that are already installed, but its official material does not establish a general standalone-installer program. Microsoft’s Windows Store ecosystem offers an offline-PC license for some titles, yet that license must be obtained online and renewed periodically. Those are different kinds of access: an account redownload, a local installer you control, and permission for an installed game to start without a connection.
At a glance: what each store actually lets you keep
The comparison below reflects official documentation reviewed on October 13, 2026. It separates four questions that are often incorrectly combined: whether an account can fetch files again, whether you can save an installer outside the launcher, whether an installed game can start offline, and what stops working without online services.
| Store or ecosystem | Redownload from account | Standalone offline installer | Offline play model | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | Yes. GOG says redownloads are unlimited for the account holder. | Yes. The account library provides “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS,” and GOG permits backup copies. | Single-player access is intended to work offline; Galaxy remains optional for that mode. | Multiplayer, achievements, timed events, cosmetics, rewards and other online features still depend on the individual game and its servers. |
| Epic Games Store | The official pages reviewed do not state a general redownload limit or guarantee. | The reviewed support material and EULA do not describe a standalone offline-installer facility. | The Epic Games Launcher can start supported single-player games that are already installed while the computer is offline. | Not every game supports Offline Mode. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services may be unavailable; Epic also discloses that removed software can, in rare cases, become unavailable for further download or access. |
| Microsoft Store and Xbox | The reviewed rules do not state a general redownload-count policy. | The reviewed documentation does not establish a separately retained installer file. | Some Windows titles can use a designated offline-PC license after online acquisition and download. | The offline license must be renewed online periodically and is expressly not intended to provide permanent offline play. Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating titles and is a cross-device entitlement, not an installer archive. |
Three kinds of “access” that should not be confused
Account redownloads
A redownload means the storefront currently lets the entitled account retrieve the game files again. It is convenient after a drive failure or a new-PC migration, but the files remain dependent on the store continuing to serve that account and title. A redownload permission is not a local copy and does not promise that the service will remain available forever.
A standalone offline installer
An offline installer is a set of setup files you can save on your own storage and run without using the storefront client for installation. It is the strongest preservation option in this comparison because the files remain available even when you are temporarily disconnected. It does not preserve server-hosted multiplayer, cloud synchronization or a publisher’s online account systems.

Offline launcher or device licensing
Offline mode usually means a launcher or operating system has already validated an entitlement and allows a local installation to start without a current connection. The game must already be installed, the title must support the mode, and some features can disappear. This is narrower than owning a reusable installer.
GOG: the most complete option for redownloads and local backups
Redownloading a purchase
GOG Support states that there is no limit to the number of redownloads. The allowance is tied to the account holder, so keep access to the account credentials and recovery methods. Unlimited redownloads still mean fetching the files from GOG when the service and the entitlement are available; they are not a substitute for keeping your own copy.
Downloading the offline installer
From your GOG account library, choose the game and use DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. The resulting setup files can be stored on another drive and used to install the supported build without Galaxy. GOG’s policy also describes making backup copies and installing repeatedly.
- Sign in to the GOG account that purchased or received the game.
- Open the game in the account library rather than relying only on the Galaxy client.
- Select DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS and save every installer component shown for the game.
- Copy the files to separate storage, preserving their filenames and any language or bonus-content installers you intend to keep.
- When reinstalling, run the setup files locally; Galaxy is not required for the single-player offline mode described in GOG’s policy.
GOG’s developer documentation says an offline installer is generated after a build is published and can take several hours to appear in a game library. That publishing delay affects newly released or updated builds; it is not a statement that an older installer has been removed.

What “DRM-free” covers—and what it does not
GOG’s published DRM-free commitment says the single-player mode has to be accessible offline and that the Galaxy client remains optional for that mode. The same policy recognizes that a game can include online-dependent multiplayer, achievements, cosmetics, rewards or events. A local installer therefore protects the single-player files and installation path, not every feature a title offers.
Best practice for a GOG backup
- Keep the installer set together, including patches or language packs presented in the library.
- Store one copy on a separate drive or in another physical location; a backup on the same disk does not help after disk failure.
- Record the game version and date you downloaded it, because later builds can change requirements or content.
- Expect online services to require a connection even when the executable itself launches offline.
Epic Games Store: offline launching for eligible installed games
What Epic’s Offline Mode does
Epic’s support documentation defines Offline Mode as playing supported single-player games through the Epic Games Launcher without an internet connection. The game must already be installed on that device, and Epic warns that not every title supports the mode.
Prepare while online: install the game, sign in to the launcher, and confirm that the title starts normally before disconnecting. If the launcher or game has an Offline Mode setting, enable it while connected and follow the title’s own first-run requirements. A game that has never completed its entitlement check, prerequisite installation or publisher login may fail when you take the computer offline.
Features you should expect to lose
- Online multiplayer and matchmaking.
- Cloud saves and synchronization between devices.
- Achievements or other account-linked services.
- Events, leaderboards, downloadable content checks and publisher services that need a server.
Epic’s model is therefore a convenience feature for a prepared local installation, not a promise that you can archive a universal installer. The official pages reviewed do not establish a general redownload limit either.

Removal risk disclosed in the EULA
Epic’s EULA describes your right to use the software as a license rather than ownership and says that, in rare cases, software may be removed from the store and become unavailable for further download or access. This is a disclosed possibility, not a prediction that a particular purchase will disappear. If long-term replayability matters, keep any lawful local files the publisher makes available and test the installed game before an extended offline trip.
Microsoft Store and Xbox: timed offline licensing, not permanent installers
How the Windows offline-PC license works
Microsoft’s developer documentation describes an offline PC setting for some titles with restrictive licensing. The game and its license must first be acquired and downloaded while online. The resulting offline license is renewed periodically through an internet connection, and Microsoft says the feature is not intended to enable permanent offline play.
That makes the feature useful for travel or an intermittent connection, but unsuitable as a once-and-for-all preservation method. The exact behavior depends on the title’s licensing setup, so check the individual game’s current store information before relying on it.

Microsoft’s customer rules say Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating games. For an eligible title, the entitlement can cover compatible Windows devices and Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles, with play limited to one device at a time. It can reduce the need to buy a second copy, but it does not produce a standalone PC installer that you can archive independently.

Choose by the kind of access you need
If you want a permanent local installation path
Prioritize a storefront that publishes offline backup installers and keep those files on independent storage. Among the stores covered here, GOG is the only one with an explicit installer-download and backup policy.
If you only need to play during a flight or outage
An installed Epic title may work through Offline Mode when it is supported and prepared in advance. A Microsoft title may work under its offline-PC license until that license requires another online renewal. Test the exact game before you leave; store-level support does not make every title compatible.
If cross-device play matters more than file preservation
Check whether the Microsoft game is an Xbox Play Anywhere participant. That entitlement concerns supported Windows and Xbox devices and one-device-at-a-time use; it should not be evaluated as an offline-installer feature.

- Identify the dependency. Decide whether you need a redownload, a local installer, or merely an offline launch of an existing installation.
- Prepare while connected. Install the game, apply required updates, complete first-run setup and sign in to any publisher account the title requires.
- Test without a network. Disconnect Wi-Fi and wired networking, launch the game, load a local save and verify the mode you actually need.
- Save the right files. For GOG, copy the complete offline installer set. For launcher-based stores, preserve local saves according to the game’s own instructions, but do not assume they replace cloud saves.
- Document renewal requirements. Microsoft’s offline-PC license needs periodic online renewal; an Epic title may have title-specific checks.
- Keep recovery access. Store account recovery details securely, because a redownload requires the entitled account even if you have lost the original installation.
Common failure points and fixes
The game is installed but refuses to start offline
Reconnect, sign in, complete any launcher or publisher authentication, and start the game once online. Then disconnect and test again. If the title is not among the store’s supported offline games, no launcher setting can make its online dependency disappear.

The installer is missing from a GOG library
Check that you are using the purchasing account and that the build has finished publishing. GOG’s developer guidance allows a delay of several hours after publication before offline installers appear.
A save is missing on another computer
Offline play can disable cloud saves. Use the game’s documented local-save location and copy saves deliberately; do not assume an offline session will synchronize later unless the title and launcher support that behavior.
Multiplayer stopped working after going offline
That is expected when the feature depends on matchmaking, authentication or a game server. A DRM-free or locally installed single-player build does not recreate those services.

Where to store offline installers
If you choose GOG’s backup installers, an external drive for game backups can provide a second copy away from your system disk. Select storage based on the total size of your installer collection and maintain at least two copies if the games are important. Storage protects your files; it does not preserve an account entitlement, restore a shut-down multiplayer server or guarantee compatibility with future operating systems.
