Digital data is information represented in an encoded, discrete form that digital systems can store, transmit, retrieve, or process. The bits alone do not explain what they mean: software uses encoding rules, a format, and context to interpret them.
What does digital data mean?
There is no single definition of “data” that applies in every technical and legal setting. The NIST glossary collects context-specific definitions, including “information in a specific representation, usually as a sequence of symbols that have meaning.” ISO describes data as a “reinterpretable representation of information in a formalized manner suitable for communication, interpretation, or processing” in its glossary entry sourced to ISO 5127:2017.
For practical purposes, digital data is information represented through discrete symbols and encoding rules so a digital system can work with it. Data is the representation; information is what a person or system interprets from that representation. A formal representation can be processed, but it is not automatically understandable without the rules that give its symbols meaning.

How does a computer know what a string of 0s and 1s means?
A computer interprets bits by following conventions defined by an encoding and a format, often with structural or descriptive information that identifies how to read the values. The same bit pattern can represent different things under different rules. ISO illustrates this with bits that represent numbers for temperature observations: a description is needed to establish that the values are temperatures measured in degrees Celsius.
Encoding provides a mapping or transformation. The Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative defines encoding as “the transformation of a signal or data into a code by means of a programmed algorithm.” Encoding can be used to convert analog information to digital form, compress or encrypt data, add redundancy, or translate between codes. The resulting representation still depends on a compatible decoder and the relevant context.

What are the main features of digital data?
These are properties of digital representation, not promises that every digital file is accurate, secure, lossless, or readable forever.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Discrete representation: Values are represented using a defined set of symbols. Binary is common in digital systems, but the concept of digital data is not limited to a particular physical implementation.
- Machine processing: Because the representation follows formal rules, software can store, retrieve, transmit, and process it.
- Dependence on encoding and format: Rules map symbols to characters, numbers, fields, or media content. Without compatible rules, the same stored symbols may be misread or uninterpretable.
- Transferability: Electronic data can be retrieved or transmitted. Preserving its meaning during copying or transfer requires retaining the relevant format and context.
- Many kinds of content: Text, images, audio, video, measurements, and structured records can all be represented digitally, but they use different encoding conventions and formats.
Examples of digital data
Text
A text encoding maps written characters to machine-readable values. Unicode supports consistent multilingual text exchange, and UTF-8 is its byte-oriented encoding designed to work with ASCII-based systems. Unicode is not, by itself, a definition for every file format or every kind of digital data. See the Unicode 18.0.0 specification.

Temperature readings
A stored number becomes meaningful as a temperature only when conventions or metadata establish what quantity it represents and which unit applies. For instance, a value of 21 could mean degrees Celsius, degrees Fahrenheit, or something unrelated to temperature.
Medical imaging records
DICOM shows how digital data can be organized into a domain-specific structure. Its dataset model uses data elements with encoded attribute values to represent information about a real-world object. DICOM is a medical-imaging standard, not a universal model for all data; see DICOM PS3.5 2024c.

How is digital data different from analog information?
Analog representations vary continuously, while digital representations use discrete encoded symbols. Digitization maps analog information or a signal into a digital code, with choices such as sampling and encoding shaping the result. A digital version can be processed under defined rules, but becoming digital does not automatically make a representation more accurate or useful: that depends on the source, conversion method, encoding, and intended task.

How is digital data measured?
Digital storage is commonly described in bits and bytes, with larger units used for greater quantities. A bit is a binary digit; a byte is a group of bits commonly used as a basic unit of storage. The size of a text character is not fixed: it depends on the character encoding, and a character may take different numbers of bytes in different encodings. The CCEA GCSE Digital Technology specification includes bits, bytes, and character representation among its educational topics.

What digital form does not guarantee
Digital representation alone does not guarantee that information is correct, complete, secure, meaningful, or durable. Those qualities depend on how data is collected, encoded, described, stored, and interpreted. A file may be intact at the bit level yet unusable if the format is unknown or the context needed to interpret it has been lost.
