A Linux shell is the program that interprets commands and can also run complete programs written in shell syntax. It expands variables and wildcards, applies quoting rules, starts processes, connects pipelines, manages jobs, and executes scripts. Bash is a practical starting point for most Linux learners, POSIX-oriented shells such as sh or dash are safer for portable scripts, and zsh or fish can provide a more customized interactive experience. The important distinction is between the shell you use at a prompt and the interpreter a script declares for itself.
What a shell does in Linux
A shell sits between you and the operating system’s programs. When you type a command, the shell reads the line, parses its syntax, performs expansions, launches the requested program, and reports the result. It can connect commands with pipelines, redirect input and output, run jobs in the background, and substitute variables or command results before execution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The shell is also a programming language. Scripts use variables, conditionals, loops, functions, exit statuses, command substitution, and pattern matching. Bash’s manual describes a Unix shell as both a command interpreter and a programming language. This dual role explains why a shell can feel like a command prompt while also requiring language-specific rules.
Interactive shell versus script interpreter
Your interactive shell controls the experience at a terminal: command-line editing, history, completion, prompts, aliases, and startup configuration. A script, however, should run under the interpreter whose syntax it actually uses. The shell you prefer interactively does not automatically make it the right interpreter for every script.

For example, a user may choose zsh or fish as a daily shell while keeping a deployment script explicitly under Bash or a POSIX shell. Conversely, starting Bash from a fish prompt does not convert fish syntax into Bash syntax. Treat the shebang and the script’s language as the authority.
Major Linux shell families
| Shell | Standards or family relationship | Good fit | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
sh |
Historical Bourne interface and POSIX shell baseline | Portable scripts and minimal environments | Small feature set; implementation details still need checking |
| Bash | Bourne-Again shell; broadly sh-compatible with extensions |
General Linux use, learning, automation, and interactive work | Bash-only syntax is not portable to every sh implementation |
dash |
Small Debian Almquist shell used for scripts | Fast, simple POSIX-oriented scripts | Fewer interactive conveniences and Bash extensions |
ksh / mksh |
Korn-shell family | Korn-style scripting and systems with Unix heritage | Availability and dialect differ between systems |
| zsh | Korn-influenced shell with a POSIX emulation mode | Advanced completion, globbing, and customization | Its default mode is not POSIX-compatible |
| fish | Independent language designed around friendly interactive use | Syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, and useful defaults | Bash and POSIX scripts cannot be assumed to run unchanged |
sh and POSIX-oriented shells
sh is best understood as an interface and standards baseline rather than a guarantee that one particular executable is installed everywhere. On one distribution, /bin/sh may point to a small shell such as dash; on another, it may point elsewhere. The name alone does not promise Bash features.
POSIX shell syntax deliberately avoids many conveniences found in larger interactive shells. Portable scripts normally rely on simple variables, command substitution, tests, functions, loops, redirection, and pipelines. They avoid Bash arrays, [[ ... ]], process substitution, and other extensions unless the script explicitly selects Bash.
Why dash is common for system scripts
Dash is a small Debian Almquist shell used for scripts. Debian’s reference describes it as good for shell scripts. Its compact design makes it suitable for boot and system tasks where predictable POSIX behavior and quick startup matter more than interactive features. It is not intended to be a drop-in replacement for Bash at a user’s prompt.
Even POSIX-like shells can differ in details such as shell variables and glob expansion. Test on the actual target system, and consult that shell’s man page when behavior matters.
Bash: the broad-compatibility default
Bash means “Bourne-Again SHell.” GNU describes it as implementing the IEEE POSIX Shell and Tools specification while adding interactive and programming improvements. It reimplements and extends the historical Bourne shell and incorporates ideas associated with Korn and C shells.

Bash is a sensible first shell for general Linux learning because documentation, examples, and installed availability are extensive. It supports convenient interactive editing and history as well as richer scripting features, including indexed and associative arrays, [[ ... ]] conditionals, arithmetic evaluation, and other extensions.
When Bash syntax is appropriate
Declare Bash when you use Bash-specific features. A script beginning with #!/usr/bin/env bash asks the environment to locate Bash; a script beginning with #!/bin/sh promises the more restricted shell language selected for sh. Do not write Bash syntax under an sh shebang and hope the system’s sh happens to be Bash.
A Bash script can still be conservative and portable within the Bash family. State the requirement in documentation, test with the minimum Bash version your target supports, and avoid silently depending on interactive startup files.
Zsh: powerful interactive customization
Zsh most closely resembles the Korn shell among the standard shells. Its interactive strengths include advanced completion, flexible globbing, and extensive configuration. It also provides a POSIX emulation mode.
That emulation mode does not make ordinary zsh the same language as sh. The zsh manual explicitly notes that its default mode is not POSIX-compatible. A zsh prompt can therefore be an excellent place to work while a portable script still uses sh or a script-specific Bash shebang.
Using zsh without breaking scripts
- Keep zsh startup configuration in zsh’s own startup files rather than assuming another shell will read them.
- Give each script a shebang matching its syntax.
- Run syntax checks and tests under the declared interpreter, not merely under the shell currently open in your terminal.
- Be especially cautious with arrays, glob qualifiers, option settings, and completion-related configuration; these are common sources of accidental shell coupling.
Fish: friendly syntax with deliberate incompatibility
Fish is designed for user-friendly interactive work. Its official introduction highlights syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, and completion interfaces, and presents it as useful immediately without configuration.

Fish’s design document says it follows POSIX where doing so does not conflict with its design goals. That is a design objective, not a promise that POSIX or Bash syntax will run unchanged. Fish uses its own language conventions, so scripts written for Bash or sh generally require translation rather than a different shebang alone.
Choose fish for the prompt, not for automatic script compatibility
Fish can make command discovery and editing easier, particularly for users who value sensible defaults and visible feedback. If a project supplies Bash or POSIX instructions, execute those commands in the required shell or adapt them carefully. Do not paste a multiline Bash script into fish and interpret syntax errors as defects in the script.
How to choose a Linux shell
For portable scripts
Select a POSIX-oriented interpreter and write POSIX syntax. Use #!/bin/sh when the target policy defines sh as the required interface, or use the specific POSIX shell required by the environment. Avoid extensions that are not part of the language you declared.
For learning and general Linux administration
Start with Bash unless a course, distribution, or workplace standard says otherwise. Its broad documentation makes it easier to understand examples, while you can still learn which constructs are portable and which are Bash-specific.
For interactive customization
Choose zsh when completion, globbing, and deep configuration are priorities. Choose fish when highlighting, autosuggestions, and useful defaults matter more than Bash syntax compatibility.
For boot and system scripts
Use the interpreter required by the target distribution and its script policy. Never assume that /bin/sh means Bash, and never change a system script’s shebang casually: the script may rely on the distribution’s selected implementation.

For moving between shells
Test language features separately. Quoting, arrays, command substitution, globbing, conditionals, and startup files can all behave differently even when command names look familiar.
How to check which shell you are using
Two checks answer different questions. To see the configured login shell value, run:
printf '%sn' "$SHELL"
This environment variable commonly records the account’s login-shell setting. It may not describe the process currently interpreting your command if you started another shell inside it.
To inspect the shell process attached to the current session, run:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteps -p $$ -o comm=
Here, $$ expands to the current shell’s process ID. The two commands can produce different answers: for example, a login shell may be Bash while the current process is a zsh or fish launched from it. For shell-specific behavior, consult the corresponding manual page, such as man bash, man dash, man zsh, or man fish.
Shebangs, scripts, and portability
The first line of an executable script selects its interpreter. Common choices include:

#!/bin/sh
#!/usr/bin/env bash
#!/usr/bin/env zsh
#!/usr/bin/env fish
Use the path and interpreter convention required by your deployment environment. An absolute path can be predictable on a controlled system; /usr/bin/env searches the user’s PATH and can locate an interpreter installed in a nonstandard location. Whichever form you choose, document the requirement and test on a clean environment.
A practical portability workflow
- Write down the target operating systems and their shell policy.
- Choose the narrowest language that satisfies the script: POSIX syntax for broad portability, Bash or another named shell when extensions are needed.
- Put the matching shebang at the top of the file.
- Run the script with that interpreter explicitly during testing, for example
sh script.shorbash script.sh. - Test filenames containing spaces, wildcard characters, empty variables, missing files, and failed commands; these cases expose quoting and expansion mistakes.
- Keep interactive aliases, functions, and prompt settings out of scripts unless they are intentionally loaded.
Running sh script.sh or bash script.sh explicitly invokes that interpreter even if the file’s executable bit or shebang would otherwise select something else. This is useful for diagnostics, but the shebang still matters when users execute the file directly.

Assuming sh is Bash
Symptom: a script fails on [[, arrays, or another Bash extension. Fix: either rewrite the script in POSIX syntax or change the shebang to Bash and ensure Bash is an accepted dependency.
Assuming similar shells share startup files
Symptom: an alias, function, or environment setting works in one terminal but disappears in another. Fix: identify the shell actually running and place configuration in that shell’s documented startup files. Do not copy configuration blindly between Bash, zsh, and fish; their syntax and startup rules differ.
Using the interactive shell to test a different script language
Symptom: a command works when typed at a prompt but fails when run as a script. Fix: test through the script’s declared interpreter and remove dependencies on prompt-only aliases, functions, or options.
Treating POSIX as identical everywhere
Symptom: a supposedly portable script behaves differently on two systems. Fix: check the exact sh implementation, review variable and globbing assumptions, and test on every supported target.
Quick Recap
