The “every 24 minutes” figure describes an average rate of calls to U.S. poison centers about dietary supplement exposures from 2000 through 2012—not a current rate of confirmed poisonings. A 2017 announcement from Nationwide Children’s Hospital reported 274,998 exposure cases in that period. The findings point to a practical safety issue, especially around young children and supplements stored at home, but they do not mean every call involved an injury.
What the 24-minute statistic actually measures
Nationwide Children’s Hospital announced in 2017 that researchers from its Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Central Ohio Poison Center identified 274,998 dietary supplement exposure cases recorded from 2000 through 2012. Averaged across that period, poison centers received a call about a supplement exposure roughly every 24 minutes. The data came from the National Poison Data System, which is maintained by the American Association of Poison Control Centers and populated by participating poison centers serving the United States and its territories. Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s 2017 announcement reports the findings.
An exposure call is not automatically a confirmed poisoning or evidence of a serious injury. The statistic is also not a 2026 estimate: it summarizes reports from a defined 13-year period. The announcement is a summary of the study; it does not provide all the underlying methods and subgroup details.

The study announcement says 70% of the calls involved children younger than six, and most of those exposures were unintentional. In 97.3% of the reported exposures, the setting was home; in more than 97% of cases, the child swallowed the substance. These findings make household access a clear prevention focus, but they do not suggest that most young children experienced severe outcomes.

Those are study-period findings, not a current ranking of products or an assessment of any specific supplement.
Which supplement categories appeared in the calls?
The 2017 announcement grouped reported exposures into several categories. Its percentages describe the share of exposure calls in the study summary, not the share of supplements sold or used by the public.

The announcement describes changes in exposure-call rates over three intervals: an increase of 46.1% during 2000–2002, a decrease of 8.8% during 2002–2005, and an increase of 49.3% during 2005–2012. It says the decline in the middle interval most likely resulted from the FDA ban on ma huang, a botanical stimulant previously found in some supplements. That explanation is the study announcement’s interpretation; the figures should not be read as proof that a single policy change caused the trend.

What FDA oversight of supplements means
Dietary supplements do not go through the same general premarket approval process for safety and effectiveness as drugs. The FDA says it is not authorized to approve supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed, and that in many cases companies may introduce products without notifying the agency. This does not mean supplements are wholly unregulated: companies remain responsible for product safety and legal compliance, while FDA describes post-market oversight that includes facility inspections, label review, and monitoring adverse-event reports and complaints. See the agency’s consumer information on dietary supplements.
The practical distinction is that FDA’s lack of general premarket approval is not a guarantee that a product is unsafe, nor is it evidence that every marketed supplement has been reviewed and found safe and effective. FDA advises consumers to talk with a doctor, pharmacist, or other health professional before deciding to buy or use a supplement.

How to reduce the risk of a child getting into supplements
FDA recommends keeping medicines and dietary supplements where children cannot see or reach them. Its advice includes not leaving containers on counters and not relying on purses or briefcases as hiding places. A lockable storage box can be one way to limit access, but the cited guidance does not test or endorse a particular storage product.

- Choose storage that is both out of a child’s sight and beyond reach; do not use a bag that a child can access as a substitute.
- When considering a supplement for yourself or a child, discuss it with a health professional who can take the person’s health and medicines into account.
The researchers also called for child-resistant packaging and caregiver education. That is a recommendation from the study authors, not proof that any package or storage method can prevent every exposure. FDA’s storage guidance is available in its consumer update on keeping medicines away and out of sight.

What to do after a suspected exposure
If someone may have swallowed a supplement, contact your local poison center for case-specific guidance. If the person is having a medical emergency, contact emergency services immediately. Do not rely on the historical study statistic to assess an individual exposure. FDA’s process for reporting suspected serious reactions or illnesses is for product safety monitoring; it is separate from getting urgent help after a possible exposure.
