For most data centers, batteries are the cleanest option at the site for short outages and frequent cycling, particularly when they charge from low-carbon electricity. Natural-gas generators usually emit less nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter and sulfur dioxide than diesel, but methane leakage in the fuel supply chain can shrink or eliminate their climate advantage. Diesel remains the most established choice for outages lasting many hours or days because fuel can be stored on site.
There is no universal winner. The right ranking depends on outage duration, charging electricity, generator certification, methane assumptions, fuel security and the life-cycle boundary used. A common resilient design uses a battery energy-storage system (BESS) for immediate ride-through and a fuel-based generator for long-duration power.
The practical answer in one view
| Question | Usually favored | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Which has the least pollution while operating at the data center? | Battery storage | A battery produces no exhaust at the site during discharge. It still has manufacturing and charging impacts. |
| Which is cleaner than diesel for local air quality? | Natural gas, when the model and permit configuration support it | Cited natural-gas units have lower NOx and particulate ranges than the cited Tier 4 diesel unit, but results vary by engine and controls. |
| Which is best for a rare, multi-day outage? | Diesel or natural gas with secure fuel arrangements | Fuel systems can run for hours to days if fuel and maintenance are available; batteries require a very large energy store and a way to recharge. |
| Which is cleanest over its full life cycle? | It depends | Battery manufacturing and charging mix, methane leakage, generator efficiency and the accounting boundary can change the result. |
Schneider Electric summarized the long-runtime problem in 2022: “there is no obvious choice for a direct replacement of diesel generators for a long runtime backup-only application.” That is why a site-level design, rather than a brand-level ranking, is necessary.

Local air pollution
Exhaust from combustion equipment can contain NOx, carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and, depending on the fuel and controls, sulfur dioxide (SO2). These pollutants affect workers, nearby communities and permitting. A battery has no combustion exhaust while discharging, although an associated generator may still operate during the same event.
Life-cycle climate impact
A life-cycle assessment can include extraction and processing of fuel, transmission, combustion, equipment manufacturing, battery materials, replacement parts and the electricity used to charge a battery. A battery therefore is not “zero-emission” over its entire life. Conversely, a gas generator’s climate impact is not limited to carbon dioxide at the engine; methane released during production and delivery is a critical input.
Resilience and resource use
Cleaner operation is not useful if the system cannot carry the critical load. Runtime, recharge capability, fuel delivery, black-start behavior, maintenance and protection systems determine whether a technology can support the facility during a real outage.

| Equipment in the cited comparison | NOx | Particulate matter | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 4 diesel | 0.67 g/kWh | 0.03 g/kWh | A named figure for the cited Tier 4 diesel equipment, not a universal value for every diesel fleet. |
| Natural-gas models | 0.03–0.30 g/kWh | 0.01–0.04 g/kWh | A range across cited models; engine design, emissions controls and permit configuration determine the actual result. |
| Battery discharge | No on-site combustion exhaust | No on-site combustion exhaust | Charging electricity, manufacturing and any backup generator emissions remain outside this operating snapshot. |
On those cited models, natural gas can substantially reduce NOx and may reduce PM compared with the Tier 4 diesel figure. The range matters: the highest natural-gas PM value, 0.04 g/kWh, is above the cited diesel value of 0.03 g/kWh. You cannot infer performance from the fuel name alone.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s data-center report provides a separate fuel-cell comparison: its cited proton-exchange-membrane fuel-cell configuration produced annual criteria-pollutant emissions below 1% of those from a diesel generator operating for 24 hours, with CO2 30% lower. That comparison is between a fuel cell and diesel; it does not establish that every battery or natural-gas system will achieve those results.
Life-cycle climate impact and the methane question
Diesel
Diesel generators emit CO2 when fuel burns and also create upstream impacts from crude-oil extraction, refining and transport. Their environmental burden is concentrated in combustion during tests and outages, but stored fuel lets them operate independently of the electric grid for long periods.

Natural gas generally produces less CO2 per unit of electricity than diesel combustion and can have lower local NOx and PM. Its life-cycle result depends heavily on methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and leakage can occur during extraction, processing, transmission, storage and distribution. DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory updated its natural-gas life-cycle analysis to cover those stages; excluding them can make gas look cleaner than it is.

A gas plant connected to a constrained or disrupted pipeline also has a different reliability profile from a generator with fuel stored in tanks. A site must evaluate both the emissions inventory and the probability that gas service will be available when the grid is not.
Lithium-ion batteries
Batteries move emissions upstream: mining and processing materials, cell manufacturing, pack production, replacements and charging electricity all contribute. NREL’s life-cycle dataset reports distributions for lithium-ion storage and natural gas across upstream, combustion, non-combustion, downstream and total stages rather than one universal number. That presentation is important because a battery charged from a coal-heavy grid will generally have a different climate profile from one charged with low-carbon electricity.
Frequent cycling can improve the relative case for storage because one battery installation can replace many generator starts and test runs. A rarely used battery that is replaced early, or charged from a carbon-intensive grid, may deliver less life-cycle benefit than a simple operating-emissions comparison suggests.

| Characteristic | Battery BESS | Natural-gas generator | Diesel generator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical role | Ride-through and short-duration support, often minutes to hours | Firm generation for extended outages where gas service is dependable | Firm generation for extended outages with fuel stored on site |
| Energy source during an outage | Stored electrical energy; must be recharged | Pipeline or stored gas, subject to supply and pressure | On-site liquid fuel inventory and deliveries |
| Long-runtime constraint | Energy capacity, thermal limits, degradation and recharge availability | Pipeline interruption, pressure, engine maintenance and fuel quality | Tank size, refueling logistics, fuel aging and emissions limits |
| 24-hour backup | Possible only with a very large engineered system and a credible recharge plan; not the default | Technically practical when fuel infrastructure is reliable | Technically practical when sufficient fuel is stored and delivered |
Schneider Electric’s long-runtime evaluation found lithium-ion batteries poorly suited to a 24-hour backup scenario, while natural gas was among the practical alternatives. That conclusion concerns a long-runtime, backup-only application, not every BESS design. A multi-megawatt data-center BESS is an engineered electrical installation with fire protection, thermal management, controls and interconnection studies. A consumer lithium-ion power station has different transfer behavior, runtime, safety certification and scalability and is not a substitute for that system.

NREL’s reliability study examined diesel, natural gas, renewables and lithium-ion BESS for outages from one hour to two weeks. It warns that assumptions about fuel availability can distort long-duration reliability estimates. Any model should state whether a truck delivery, pipeline, recharge from the grid or renewable generation is assumed to remain available during the outage.
Reliability and electrical behavior
Transfer and ride-through
Batteries paired with power-conversion equipment can respond rapidly and bridge the interval while generators start and stabilize. This reduces the number of generator starts and can protect sensitive loads from voltage and frequency disturbances. The design still needs controls for synchronization, protection, black start and islanded operation.
Black start and island operation
A generator may need starting batteries, fuel systems, switchgear and control power before it can energize a dead bus. A BESS can provide grid-forming support in some architectures, but that capability must be specified and tested; it is not automatic for every battery container.

Diesel autonomy is tied to the volume and quality of fuel on site, plus access for replenishment. Natural-gas autonomy is tied to pipeline or stored-gas service and may fail during a regional emergency affecting the same utility infrastructure as the data center. Redundancy, dual feeds and contracted delivery should be modeled rather than assumed.

Site constraints that can change the choice
- Noise: Engines and cooling systems create acoustic impacts; batteries eliminate engine noise while discharging but still have HVAC and fire-suppression equipment.
- Exhaust and permitting: Combustion units require stack design, air permits, testing and operating-hour limits that vary by jurisdiction and model.
- Fire protection: Lithium-ion installations require detection, separation, ventilation and emergency-response planning tailored to the chemistry and enclosure.
- Space: Fuel tanks, generators, acoustic treatment and exhaust stacks compete for the same constrained campus area as BESS containers, transformers and switchgear.
- Water and cooling: Engine and battery thermal systems have different cooling loads; the design should document water use, heat rejection and operation during utility loss.
- Maintenance: Diesel fuel can degrade during storage, gas engines need scheduled service, and batteries lose usable capacity with age, temperature and cycling.
A decision process for selecting backup technology
- Define the protected load. Separate life-safety systems, networking, storage, cooling and other loads. Record peak demand, minimum stable load and allowable interruption.
- Set the outage cases. Analyze short disturbances, several-hour events, a 24-hour event and the longest credible utility restoration. Include weather and regional emergencies.
- Specify the emissions boundary. Report on-site NOx, PM, CO and VOCs separately from life-cycle CO2-equivalent emissions. State whether methane leakage, manufacturing and charging electricity are included.
- Choose the charging assumption. For a BESS, document the grid mix, renewable contract or on-site generation used to recharge it after an event.
- Validate fuel availability. For diesel, size tanks and delivery contracts. For natural gas, test pipeline pressure, curtailment risk and any stored-gas option.
- Model degradation and maintenance. Include battery capacity fade, replacement intervals, generator start reliability, test schedules and fuel quality management.
- Compare engineered options. Evaluate a battery-only design, a fuel-generator-only design and a hybrid. Use the same load, outage and availability assumptions for all three.
- Confirm permits and emergency procedures. Obtain air, noise, fire and electrical approvals before treating a conceptual emissions advantage as a buildable design.
Why a hybrid architecture is often the practical answer
A BESS can carry the load immediately, absorb short disturbances and handle frequent cycling without starting an engine. A diesel or natural-gas generator can then run the sustained load while the battery returns to its target state of charge. This arrangement can reduce engine runtime and local pollution while preserving multi-day autonomy.
The hybrid does not automatically have the lowest life-cycle emissions. Its result depends on how often the generator runs, the carbon intensity of charging electricity, battery replacement and the methane rate assigned to gas. It does, however, let the designer match each technology to the duty cycle it handles best.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a battery “zero-emission” without stating that manufacturing and charging are included in a life-cycle assessment.
- Treating the 2026 Better Data Center Project figures as fleet-wide averages rather than model-specific values for equipment at or above 560 kW.
- Assuming every natural-gas engine has lower NOx and PM than every diesel engine.
- Ignoring methane leakage when comparing gas with diesel on climate impact.
- Sizing a BESS for 24 hours without accounting for recharge, degradation, thermal limits and replacement.
- Using a consumer battery power station as evidence for the capability or safety of a multi-megawatt data-center BESS.
- Counting pipeline gas as guaranteed fuel during a regional disaster without a supply and curtailment study.
- Comparing technologies with different outage durations, generator tiers or life-cycle boundaries.
Which option fits common data-center scenarios?
Frequent short outages and power-quality events
A BESS is usually the cleanest operational choice. It can cycle often, avoid routine engine starts and provide immediate support. The charging source should be documented because it determines much of the climate result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Rare outages lasting one to several days
A fuel generator remains the dependable long-duration anchor. Natural gas may reduce local pollutants, but only if the selected model meets the site’s permit requirements and the gas supply is resilient. Diesel is often easier to make autonomous because tanks can be filled before a storm.
Strict local air-quality limits
Start with a battery for the portion of the outage it can cover, then evaluate the cleanest permitted firm-generation option. The EPA fuel-cell comparison shows why non-combustion or low-pollution technologies can be valuable, but that result should not be generalized to all systems.
Low-carbon grid or on-site renewable charging
Battery storage generally gains a stronger life-cycle case when its electricity is low carbon and the system cycles regularly. Long outages still require a plan for energy after the stored charge is exhausted.
Bottom line
Batteries are usually the cleanest at the data-center site for short outages and frequent cycling, natural gas often has lower local pollution than diesel, and diesel remains the most established long-duration option because fuel can be stored. None is automatically the cleanest in every life-cycle analysis. Rank the choices only after stating outage duration, charging source, generator tier, methane assumptions, fuel availability and the emissions boundary. In many facilities, a properly engineered BESS paired with firm generation provides the best balance of air quality, resilience and practical autonomy.
