If you saw a bright, jellyfish-shaped display over parts of the East Coast at dawn on October 13, 2026, it was reported as the plume from a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral. The plume glowed because high-altitude exhaust caught sunlight while the ground below was still dark. “Jellyfish” describes its shape; it does not mean the display was a naturally formed cloud.

What was the strange cloud over the East Coast?

WJXT/News4JAX reported that a Falcon 9 lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 6:33:44 a.m. EDT on October 13, 2026. The station said the rocket carried NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services 35 mission (CRS-35), and that people saw the display across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. WJXT/News4JAX’s same-day report is the source for those launch and mission details.

Why did the plume glow at dawn?

A rocket plume can become visible over a wide area when it forms high above the ground. Near sunrise, the rising sun may illuminate the exhaust while observers below are still in darkness. That contrast makes the plume stand out as a luminous, expanding shape. NASA’s March 19, 2026 Astronomy Picture of the Day explains the same kind of dawn “jellyfish” effect and says rocket exhaust is mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide. It illustrates the visual mechanism; it is not a mission record for the October 13 launch.

Is a “jellyfish cloud” a real cloud?

“Jellyfish” is a visual nickname for the shape of a glowing rocket plume, not a scientific identification. In this East Coast sighting, the local report attributed the display to the Falcon 9 launch. It should not be described as a naturally formed noctilucent cloud simply because it looked cloud-like.

Natural noctilucent clouds are a separate phenomenon. NASA has reported that morning rocket launches can contribute to the formation of night-shining clouds away from the poles, but that broader finding does not make every glowing launch plume a noctilucent cloud. In its 2022 account, NASA quoted Naval Research Laboratory scientist Michael Stevens: “Space traffic plays an important role in the formation and variation of these clouds.” The statement concerns natural noctilucent clouds, not a classification of the October 13 display. NASA’s account of the AIM mission findings provides that context.

What other sky phenomenon might sound similar?

Sporadic E layers are not visible clouds. NASA describes them as thin, metallic layers in the upper atmosphere that can affect radio waves. They are distinct from both natural noctilucent clouds and the visible plume seen after the reported launch. NASA’s September 2026 explainer on radio-disrupting clouds covers those layers.

What does meteor smoke have to do with natural night-shining clouds?

NASA reported in 2012 that about 3% of each ice crystal in a noctilucent cloud is meteoritic, based on a finding from the SOFIE instrument and attributed to Mark Hervig. That figure describes the composition of natural noctilucent-cloud ice crystals. It is not a measurement of rocket exhaust or of the October 13 plume. NASA’s SOFIE account explains the finding.

Could you see or photograph the plume without special equipment?

No telescope or specialized skywatching equipment was needed to understand or see this bright display. For a fleeting sighting, a phone camera may capture the glow, but a steady hand—or an optional tripod—can help reduce blur. A photo alone may not establish what caused a sky phenomenon; the launch report and timing provide the identification in this case.
