It is not confirmed. A Windows 11 user reported that the low-battery warning looked darker and its close button less rounded after installing the August 27, 2026 preview update KB5120998. Microsoft’s release notes do not document a redesign or a fix for that dialog, and the report does not establish whether the appearance is intentional, a glitch, or specific to one device.
What changed in the reported warning?
In an August 28, 2026 post on ElevenForum, a Windows 11 user said the “your battery is running low” window looked “this black” and that its close button was no longer rounded as before. The user associated the change with installing KB5120998.
A respondent asked whether the computer had been restarted. The reporter said it had. The thread does not document a confirmed diagnosis or a fix, so the timing alone cannot show that the update caused the appearance.

Microsoft identifies KB5120998 as an August 27, 2026 cumulative preview update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, associated with OS builds 26100.9278 and 26200.9278. Its published release notes cover multiple features, improvements, and known issues, but do not mention the low-battery dialog’s color or close-button shape, or a fix for either.

That means the reported appearance is not documented in those notes. It does not prove that Microsoft intentionally redesigned the dialog, nor that the appearance is a visual glitch.
How to check whether your PC matches the report
- Check your Windows version and build. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version, and OS build.
- Check the installed update. In Settings, open Windows Update > Update history and look for KB5120998.
- Compare like with like. The Microsoft Update Catalog listing includes packages for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 on x64 and arm64 systems. Record your device and system type as well as the version, build, and update when comparing reports.
- Check Microsoft’s current release information. Review the KB5120998 notes and known-issue information for any later guidance relevant to your version.
What should you do if the warning looks different?
If the dialog’s appearance is the only symptom, note your Windows version, OS build, device, and installed update, then consult Microsoft’s current update guidance. Restarting was suggested in the forum thread, but the reporter had already restarted and no confirmed resolution was reported.

Do not uninstall the update or alter Windows components based only on this one appearance report. The available information does not establish an underlying battery or charging fault; it describes a change in how the warning looks.
