A voice agent saying “you’re booked” does not, by itself, prove that the restaurant’s reservation system saved a table. OpenTable’s API documentation separates checking availability from creating a reservation, and its booking workflow includes failure conditions that can occur between those steps. If you are unsure, verify the restaurant, date, time and party size through a confirmation or the restaurant’s own channel.
How can a voice agent say you are booked when no reservation exists?
The phrase “I found a table” can describe an availability result, while a completed booking requires a separate reservation-creation action. OpenTable documents a voice-oriented In-House Booking API distinct from its Consumer API for visually accessible online reservations. Its Make Reservation endpoint is the step that books and confirms a previously locked slot. That technical workflow explains why a fluent spoken response and a saved reservation are not necessarily the same thing.
The five cases below organize documented workflow steps and errors; they are not ranked causes or evidence that false confirmations happen frequently. OpenTable’s sources do not quantify how often such failures occur or establish that a voice agent intentionally misleads callers.

Five ways the booking can fall through
1. Availability is mistaken for a reservation
A search can find a possible time without creating a reservation. OpenTable documents availability searching separately from making a reservation. Until the booking step completes, an open-looking slot is not proof that a table is held for you.

2. The slot cannot be secured, or its temporary hold expires
OpenTable’s API workflow uses a slot lock that must be confirmed within five minutes. Its documented errors include a party size with no availability and an invalid or expired reservation token. In either case, a time that appeared available may not become a confirmed booking.
3. The final request fails validation or a booking rule
The reservation request may be rejected if required information is missing or invalid, or if a business rule prevents the booking. OpenTable’s API examples include invalid diner information, required credit-card details and overlapping reservations. A response that reports an error is not a successful reservation, even if the call script has already moved on to a reassuring phrase.

4. The restaurant cannot complete the transaction
OpenTable’s documented error cases include inactive restaurants, restaurants that do not accept online reservations and restaurant connectivity issues. These are system or restaurant-side constraints, not proof that the caller supplied incorrect details.

A verbal summary can help catch a misheard date or party size, but it does not let you confirm what the restaurant’s system recorded. OpenTable says restaurants can find voice AI bookings in reservation reports under the Partner column. Diners should not assume they can access those restaurant-side reports; use a confirmation or contact the restaurant through its own channel if the booking is uncertain.

What should you do if the phone bot said you were booked?
- Check the details you were given. Confirm the restaurant, date, time and party size. A mismatch in any of these means you should resolve the details before relying on the reservation.
- Look for a confirmation from the restaurant or booking channel. If one was provided, check that it matches the details you requested. Not every restaurant or booking promises an email or text, so the absence of a message alone does not establish that the reservation failed.
- Contact the restaurant using its own channel. Ask whether it can find a reservation under your name for the specified date, time and party size. If it cannot confirm the booking, ask whether it can make or restore the reservation.
- If you are the restaurant operator, check the reservation report. OpenTable says voice AI bookings appear under the Partner column. Its troubleshooting guidance says to verify that the integration is active; if it appears active but bookings are missing or incorrect, contact OpenTable Support.
- Send the issue to the right support team. OpenTable directs call behavior, scripts and prompts issues to the voice AI partner. Missing or incorrect OpenTable reservation records should be raised with OpenTable Support.
What the documentation establishes—and what it does not
OpenTable’s API documentation establishes that availability search, slot locking and reservation creation are distinct parts of a booking workflow, and it lists examples of errors that can prevent completion. OpenTable Support’s guidance explains where restaurant operators can inspect voice AI bookings and how to investigate missing or incorrect records.
Those materials do not measure false confirmations, show how often any listed error occurs, or prove that a particular caller’s reservation failed for one of these reasons. A confident voice is therefore not enough to settle the question; the useful test is whether the restaurant can verify the correct reservation details.
