It is not confirmed. The available official material establishes that Sportsbet is the AFL and AFLW’s official wagering partner and that it has used AI in a separate product, but it does not verify that the AFL told the company to stop using players in AI-generated content. No direct statement or reliable report confirming the alleged instruction, its scope, or Sportsbet’s response is established here.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Sportsbet describes itself as the official wagering partner of the AFL and AFLW on its partnerships page. That confirms a commercial relationship, not the terms of any permission to use player images or likenesses in advertising. The partnership alone does not establish whether a particular AI-generated image was authorized or whether the league objected to it.

The central claim—that the AFL instructed Sportsbet to stop using players in AI-generated content—remains unverified. The available sources do not establish when an instruction was supposedly made, which content or players it concerned, what action the AFL requested, or whether Sportsbet removed or changed anything. No direct on-record statement about the alleged instruction was found.

What Sportsbet’s documented AI use does—and does not—show

A 2026 report from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) describes a Sportsbet AI chatbot launched in 2025 and programmed to act like a specific AFL commentator. That is a separate example of AI use. It does not show that the chatbot used player likenesses, that the AFL objected to it, or that it was connected to any alleged instruction about promotional material.

Sportsbet’s AI Assistant terms say, “Sportsbet AI Assistant has been developed for entertainment purposes only.” The terms also describe the tool’s limitations and say users should independently verify information before relying on it for betting decisions. Those statements concern the assistant; they do not explain the company’s rules for AI-generated advertising featuring players.

Why the distinction matters

“AI-generated content” can refer to different things: a generated image of a player, a synthetic voice, a generic sports scene, a chatbot persona, or editorial material. The available information does not identify what content is at issue, if any. It would therefore be misleading to treat the documented commentator chatbot as evidence of a dispute over player imagery.

The material’s purpose also matters to understanding the allegation. Advertising, editorial coverage, social posts, and product features are not interchangeable categories. The evidence available here does not say which category the alleged content falls into, what permission or contractual terms might apply, or whether players or the AFL Players’ Association were consulted.

What the published terms say about moderation

Sportsbet’s rules include provisions for automated tools and human review to identify potentially contravening user-generated content. The available description does not establish whether those provisions apply to promotional content made by Sportsbet itself or address player likenesses. They cannot be used to infer what the company did in the alleged case.

Separately, AFL CEO Andrew Dillon published a statement on August 18, 2026, about an investigation involving Sydney Swans players. That statement concerns a different matter and should not be read as comment on Sportsbet or AI-generated content.

What would establish whether the instruction happened

A clear account would need the AFL’s original communication or an on-record spokesperson’s explanation, including its date, recipient, wording, and requested action. Sportsbet’s response would be needed to establish whether content was taken down or changed. Details about the players, the generated material, its platform and purpose, and any relevant permissions would clarify what the disagreement concerned.
