Probably—but not lips like a human’s. The best-supported current reconstruction is that Tyrannosaurus rex had scaly, lizard-like tissue covering its teeth when its mouth was closed. A 2023 study led by Thomas Cullen reached that conclusion from tooth wear, dental histology, tooth-to-skull proportions and comparisons with living reptiles. The study examined fossil evidence and anatomy, not preserved T. rex lips, so the exact shape, thickness and movement of the tissue remain unknown.
What scientists mean by “T. rex had lips”
In this debate, “lips” is shorthand for extraoral tissue: skin and other soft tissue around the mouth margin that could cover the teeth at rest. It does not mean T. rex had muscular, expressive human-style lips that could purse, curl or form facial expressions.
The proposed covering would have been more comparable to the scaly mouth margins of a monitor lizard. When the jaws were closed, the tissue could hide most or all of the tooth crowns. When the jaws opened, the teeth would be exposed for biting. This is an anatomical reconstruction, not a fossilized outline of a lip.

Why the question cannot be answered from a T. rex skull alone
Fossils preserve hard tissue far more reliably than skin, muscle and connective tissue. The Natural History Museum notes that soft-tissue preservation is rare. A T. rex skull can show tooth sockets, jaw shape and the texture of bone, but it normally cannot preserve the thin facial covering that sat over those structures.
Scientists therefore infer appearance by combining several kinds of evidence:
- Mechanical traces: wear or damage on teeth can indicate whether they were continually exposed.
- Microscopic structure: dental histology can reveal how teeth interacted with surrounding tissues during growth and use.
- Proportions: tooth size relative to skull dimensions can test whether teeth could physically fit beneath a mouth covering.
- Comparative anatomy: living reptiles provide models for how similar jaws and teeth can be covered or exposed.
- Skeletal anatomy: the texture and shape of jaw bones can be interpreted as evidence for particular facial tissues, although those interpretations are disputed.
None of these observations is a direct photograph of T. rex soft tissue. They constrain the range of plausible reconstructions and indicate which one best fits the total evidence.

Tooth wear points to protection from a mouth covering
Cullen and colleagues compared a tooth from Daspletosaurus, a tyrannosaur relative, with teeth from living lizards and crocodilians. The Royal BC Museum’s account reports substantially more wear on the exposed portions of alligator teeth than on the Daspletosaurus tooth.
The logic is straightforward: a tooth that remains exposed to air, dirt, abrasion and contact with neighboring surfaces should show more environmental wear than one protected by soft tissue. The relatively limited wear on the tyrannosaur tooth is therefore consistent with a covering over the tooth crown when the mouth was closed.

This is comparative evidence, not a percentage or a direct measurement of T. rex lip thickness. The sample also involves a close tyrannosaur relative rather than a preserved T. rex face. It supports the same kind of anatomy, but it does not prove that every tyrannosaur species had identical mouth margins.
Dental histology supports the same interpretation
The study’s abstract reports dental-histology evidence from crocodylians and theropods, including T. rex. The authors say the microscopic structure of the teeth supports the likelihood that marginal teeth were covered by extraoral tissue when the mouth was closed.
Histology is useful because teeth record patterns of growth, replacement and exposure at a scale that a whole skull cannot. In this case, the microscopic evidence is interpreted alongside the wear comparison rather than as an isolated proof. When independent lines of evidence point toward protection, the covered-tooth reconstruction becomes more plausible.
Tooth proportions do not require permanently exposed teeth
One longstanding objection is that tyrannosaur teeth were simply too large to fit beneath lips. Cullen’s team compared skull length and tooth size across theropods and living monitor lizards. Their conclusion was that theropod teeth were not unusually large relative to skulls and could plausibly fit beneath soft tissue.
Thomas Cullen, quoted by the Natural History Museum, summarized the point: “Although it’s been argued in the past that the teeth of predatory dinosaurs might be too big to be covered by lips, our study shows that their teeth were not atypically large.” The comparison does not establish an exact lip outline. It shows that tooth dimensions alone do not rule out a closed-mouth covering.

Why monitor lizards are important analogues
Living monitor lizards are useful comparisons because they are large, active reptiles with substantial teeth and facial anatomy that can conceal the teeth when the mouth is closed. Their skulls and tooth proportions provide a real-world test of whether a predatory reptile can have prominent teeth without displaying them continuously.

The analogy has limits. A monitor lizard is not a miniature tyrannosaur, and similarities in tooth placement or mouth tissue do not prove shared details. Evolution can produce comparable solutions in unrelated lineages, and it can also produce different tissues around superficially similar jaws. Scientists use the analogy to test physical plausibility, not to claim that T. rex had a monitor lizard’s exact face.
Crocodilians provide the contrasting model. Their teeth are visibly exposed when the mouth is closed, and their facial tissues and jaw-bone features differ from those of monitor lizards and the theropods considered in the study. Comparing both types of living reptiles helps researchers ask which anatomy better matches the fossil evidence.
The competing crocodile-like reconstruction
Not all palaeontologists accept the covered-tooth interpretation. An alternative reconstruction gives tyrannosaurs crocodile-like facial anatomy, with teeth visible outside the mouth at rest.
This view draws partly on the texture of tyrannosaur jaw bones and comparisons with crocodilian faces. Advocates interpret some rough or patterned areas of bone as evidence that the jaws carried a tight, relatively immobile facial covering rather than the fleshy margins proposed in the 2023 study.

Thomas Carr, a palaeontologist at Carthage College associated with the earlier crocodile-like reconstruction, criticized the 2023 lips interpretation as “completely unconvincing,” as reported by Science News. His objection concerns how the indirect anatomical evidence should be interpreted; it is not evidence that fossilized T. rex lips have been found.
The disagreement is therefore about anatomical inference. Both reconstructions use fossil skulls and comparisons with living animals, but they assign different meanings to tooth wear, bone texture and facial anatomy. Preserved facial tissue from a tyrannosaur would provide stronger evidence, yet such preservation is exceptionally uncommon.
Covered teeth versus exposed teeth
| Question | Covered-tooth reconstruction | Crocodile-like reconstruction |
|---|---|---|
| Were teeth visible with the jaws closed? | Teeth were probably concealed by scaly extraoral tissue. | Teeth could remain externally visible, as in crocodilians. |
| How is tooth wear interpreted? | Lower wear on the tyrannosaur-relative tooth is consistent with protection from a covering. | The wear comparison is not considered sufficient to establish lips. |
| How is dental histology interpreted? | Microscopic evidence from theropods and crocodylians supports covered marginal teeth. | The same evidence is viewed as open to another anatomical reading. |
| How are jaw-bone texture and facial anatomy interpreted? | They are compatible with soft tissue around the mouth, especially when combined with comparative anatomy. | Bone texture and crocodilian comparisons are taken to favor a tighter, exposed-tooth facial covering. |
| What certainty does the reconstruction claim? | A probable, evidence-based inference; it does not establish exact lip shape or movement. | An alternative interpretation of indirect evidence, not a demonstrated fossil soft-tissue outline. |
The table separates observations from interpretations. A tooth’s wear pattern is an observation; saying that a lip caused the lower wear is an inference. The same caution applies to bone texture and living-animal comparisons.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a likely T. rex mouth would have looked like
If the covered-tooth interpretation is correct, a closed T. rex mouth would have looked less like a crocodile’s toothy grin and more like the closed mouth of a large monitor lizard. Scaly tissue would have covered the tooth crowns, while the outline of the jaws and snout would still have been visible.
The tissue was probably not smooth, soft human lip tissue. It may have been keratinized or scaly, with limited mobility. Current evidence does not establish whether it was thick or thin, how far it extended over the sides of the jaws, or whether it formed a sharply defined edge.

When T. rex opened its jaws to bite, the teeth would of course have been exposed. A reconstruction showing exposed teeth in a feeding scene is therefore compatible with covered teeth at rest. The key issue is the closed-mouth condition.
What the fossils can and cannot establish
What the evidence can establish
- Tyrannosaur teeth were not demonstrably too large to fit beneath facial tissue.
- A tyrannosaur-relative tooth shows less exposed-surface wear than the alligator teeth used for comparison.
- Dental-histology results from theropods and crocodylians are consistent with covered marginal teeth.
- Living monitor lizards demonstrate that a large predatory reptile can conceal substantial teeth when its mouth is closed.
- Jaw-bone texture and facial anatomy provide constraints that any reconstruction must explain.
What the evidence cannot establish
- No fossilized T. rex lip or complete facial skin outline has been reported in this evidence.
- The exact thickness, color, scale pattern and edge shape of the tissue are unknown.
- The evidence does not show whether the tissue moved like a mammal’s lips.
- A tooth from Daspletosaurus cannot prove that every T. rex individual had identical soft tissue.
- Comparisons with monitor lizards or crocodilians are analogies, not direct proof of evolutionary identity.
How to read new T. rex reconstructions
Illustrations often turn a probability into a crisp visual decision. To evaluate one, first check whether it shows the animal at rest or while feeding. Exposed teeth during a bite do not by themselves contradict a lip reconstruction. Next, ask what evidence the artist or study cites: tooth wear, histology, proportions, jaw-bone texture or a living analogue.
Also distinguish a claim about anatomy from a claim about appearance. Evidence may support tissue covering the teeth without revealing whether the mouth edge was broad, narrow, wrinkled or brightly colored. Those details belong to the speculative part of a reconstruction unless additional fossils preserve them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFinally, look for calibrated language. “Probably,” “supports” and “consistent with” accurately describe the 2023 interpretation. “Proves,” “definitively had lips” and “fossilized lips were found” go beyond the evidence described here.
What the evidence supports today
The strongest current reconstruction is that T. rex probably had scaly extraoral tissue that covered its teeth when its mouth was closed. The case rests on converging but indirect evidence: comparative tooth wear, dental histology, tooth-to-skull proportions and reptile anatomy. It does not recreate a preserved lip or settle every detail of the animal’s face.
The crocodile-like interpretation remains part of the scientific debate because researchers disagree about how jaw-bone texture and facial anatomy should be read. Until rare soft-tissue preservation or a new line of evidence resolves that disagreement, the responsible answer is probabilistic: covered teeth are currently better supported by the 2023 study, but the exact appearance of T. rex’s mouth remains uncertain.
