No evidence establishes that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim caused, encouraged or materially contributed to William Chapman’s death. The Daily Mail report mentions the game while speculating about whether fantasy and reality became blurred. The confirmed account is that Chapman, 24, entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster and was fatally attacked by Altai, an Amur tiger described in the report as weighing about 200kg. Coroner, health-service and council inquiries were still unresolved in the account available for publication.
What happened at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
According to the Daily Mail report, Chapman first stood on a footbridge above the tiger enclosure and asked a stranger to photograph him with the tiger visible behind him. Minutes later, he climbed into the enclosure. Emergency services arrived quickly, but the injuries inflicted by Altai were fatal. The park subsequently reopened, the report said.
Chapman was a former child actor. A zoo visitor identified as 22-year-old Anthony Hunt told the newspaper that Chapman had his arms wide open, as if saying, “Come here, tiger. Kill me.” That is witness testimony, not a verified statement of Chapman’s intention or motive.

Why Skyrim was mentioned
The report identifies Skyrim as a game Chapman played and describes its fantasy setting, weapons, monsters and predatory animals. It then asks whether gaming or a blurred boundary between fantasy and reality might have mattered. That is a speculative framing by the newspaper. The account supplies no clinical record, digital evidence, witness analysis or official finding linking Skyrim to Chapman’s decision to enter the enclosure.

Playing a violent or fantasy game is not evidence that a person will imitate it in real life. A causal claim would require evidence connecting the game to Chapman’s thinking at the time, such as contemporaneous statements, a documented plan or findings from investigators. None was reported. The responsible conclusion is therefore limited: Skyrim was part of the newspaper’s narrative context, not an established cause of the death.
Chapman’s mental-health history and the unresolved investigations
The Daily Mail account says Chapman had schizophrenia and bouts of psychosis and was receiving mental-health services while living in Doncaster. His family raised concerns about that care. Their statement described him as “a bright, warm and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved – and William loved them back.” It also said he had suffered “significant mental illness over a number of years” and had consequently been prescribed strong medicine, while leaving it to the coroner to decide what played a part in his death.

Those details establish important context but do not, by themselves, explain the enclosure entry. Diagnosis, medication and treatment history must be interpreted through clinical records and expert evidence. They also cannot establish that services failed without an official review of the care provided and the decisions made before the incident.
The report said an inquest opened at Doncaster Coroners Court later that week. It also said the full hearing was expected in March 2027; that timetable should be confirmed with the coroner because dates can change. The NHS trust was said to have launched its own investigation, and the council planned a health-and-safety inquiry. Final findings were not available in the account.

What the available evidence can and cannot show
| Question | Evidence currently described | Safe conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Did Chapman enter the enclosure? | Report description and witness account | He entered and was fatally attacked, according to the report. |
| Was Skyrim a cause? | The game is mentioned as something Chapman played; no causal evidence is presented | Not established. |
| Did psychosis or schizophrenia determine his actions? | Reported diagnosis and history, but no coroner or clinical finding in the account | Possible context requiring expert and official assessment, not a proven explanation. |
| Did mental-health services fail him? | Family concerns and a planned NHS investigation | Unresolved until the investigation reports its findings. |
The article also cites figures attributed to a 2024 Rotherham Healthwatch survey: 70% of respondents reportedly rated a crisis service “unhelpful,” while 50% reportedly said staff were not caring, compassionate or understanding. Those percentages were relayed by Daily Mail/KhanList in 2026, and the underlying Healthwatch publication was not available with the account. They should be verified against the original survey and should not be treated as evidence about Chapman’s individual care.
What investigators will need to establish
- Chronology: CCTV, phone data and witness statements can clarify Chapman’s movements and communications before he climbed into the enclosure.
- Clinical context: Treatment records, medication history, risk assessments and contact with services may help determine his mental state and whether warning signs were documented.
- Park safety: The council inquiry can examine barriers, supervision, emergency procedures and compliance with relevant safety requirements.
- Cause of death and contributing factors: The coroner’s findings should distinguish the immediate physical cause from any medical, environmental or care-related factors.
Until those processes report, attributing the death to a video game turns an unresolved tragedy into a conclusion the evidence does not support. The established facts concern an enclosure breach, a fatal tiger attack and several ongoing investigations; the role of Skyrim remains unproven speculation.

What happens next
The inquest is the formal route for determining the circumstances and contributing factors surrounding Chapman’s death. The NHS investigation addresses the care provided by the trust, while the council’s health-and-safety inquiry concerns the site and its safeguards. Their findings may add evidence, correct parts of the initial media account or leave some questions unanswered. Until publication of those findings, readers should treat claims about a “Skyrim influence” or definitive service failure as allegations rather than established facts.
