There is no verified public statement showing Ollie Muhl reacting to AI copies of his subway videos. What is documented is that commercial AI-video pages are using his phone-on-train format as a recreation template, including instructions to reuse his original video as a visual reference.
That evidence shows imitation and repackaging, not whether Muhl consented, whether a particular copy is unlawful, or whether he has called the practice theft.
What happened to the phone-on-the-train format?
The format associated with Muhl follows a recognizable sequence: a performer sings on a station platform, places a phone beside a train window, runs alongside the departing train, and finishes with a city view. MakeViral markets a template that inserts a user’s photograph into a recreation of that sequence and identifies the original creator as @olliemuhl.
PromptCraft goes further than a general style description. Its tutorial tells users to save Muhl’s original video, remove its sound and upload the video as reference material for an AI video model. The page says Muhl posted the New York subway version on 27 August 2026.

These pages are evidence that the concept is being packaged as an AI-generation workflow. They are not evidence that Muhl authorized the use, endorsed either service or agreed to have his footage used as training or reference material.
Has Ollie Muhl publicly reacted?
A primary-source post, interview or transcript documenting the specific reaction in the headline has not been located. That means claims that Muhl “called out” the copies, accused AI of stealing his work or approved the recreations should be treated as unverified unless they can be tied to a post on his own account or a reputable interview.
The absence of a verified reaction does not make the copying insignificant. It simply separates two questions: what other people are doing with the format, and what Muhl has actually said about it. The available evidence answers the first question but not the second.

Does AI copying mean the content was stolen?
Not automatically. A recognizable idea, staging pattern or trend can raise different questions from the wholesale reuse of footage, audio, performance or editing. The documented PromptCraft workflow involves direct use of the original video as reference, while the resulting output may be substantially altered. Whether a particular result infringes rights depends on the actual files, the degree of copying, the purpose, and the law of the relevant jurisdiction.
TikTok’s labels and reporting tools address authenticity and platform safety. They do not decide copyright ownership, establish that a work is legally infringing or determine whether a creator gave permission. A label can provide context without resolving the underlying rights dispute.
What TikTok’s AI rules mean for these recreations
TikTok defines AI-generated content broadly to include images, video and audio generated or modified by artificial intelligence, including realistic alterations of a real person. Its guidance asks creators to disclose significant AI edits and requires labeling for realistic AI content under its community rules.

Labels and provenance signals
TikTok describes three forms of context: a label applied by the uploader, an automatic label applied by the platform and Content Credentials that can carry provenance information. These signals help viewers understand that a clip was generated or materially altered, but they are not proof that the person shown approved it.

Reporting suspected manipulation
TikTok provides a reporting route for deepfakes, synthetic media and manipulated media. When reporting, preserve the video URL, account name, upload date, screenshots and any prompt or template page that shows how the copy was made. Describe the specific issue—such as an unlabeled realistic alteration or use of a recognizable person—rather than asserting a legal conclusion the evidence cannot establish.

In an Interview Magazine profile, Muhl describes each video as “a big art project for myself.” That framing helps explain why a repeatable sequence can still represent substantial creative work: the performance, camera choreography, timing and final edit are designed together.

An Oliver Muhl LLC editor listing says the operation publishes to TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, seeks edits that feel “unmistakably ‘Ollie,’” and states that final videos are owned by Ollie. The listing is evidence of how his business describes its work and ownership; it is not a court ruling about every imitation of the format.
What creators can do when an AI copy appears
- Save the evidence. Record the copied clip, account, caption, upload date and any disclosure label before the post changes.
- Identify the type of reuse. Note whether the post uses Muhl’s actual footage or audio, reproduces the sequence with new material, depicts a realistic alteration of him, or merely borrows a broad idea.
- Use TikTok’s reporting channel. Select the category that matches suspected deepfake, synthetic or manipulated media, and explain the concrete facts in the report.
- Contact the uploader or platform only with supportable claims. Request attribution, labeling or removal when appropriate, but do not describe a post as legally infringing without jurisdiction-specific advice.
- Escalate rights questions separately. If original footage, music, likeness or a paid commercial use is involved, preserve the files and consult a qualified professional about the applicable law.
The clearest answer right now
People are recreating Muhl’s viral subway concept because its visual steps are distinctive and easy to turn into a repeatable AI prompt or template. At least one tutorial explicitly reuses his original video as reference material, and another service sells a photo-insertion recreation. That establishes a documented copying workflow.
