Brad Buxer, a composer who worked with Michael Jackson, said he and Jackson composed music for Sega’s 1994 game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Buxer said Jackson disliked how the Genesis/Mega Drive reproduced the music, but that is Buxer’s explanation—not a confirmed account from Sega. A former Sega executive later gave a different reason for the company stepping back from the collaboration.
What game was Michael Jackson connected to?
The story concerns Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released by Sega in 1994. In an interview reproduced by TechCrunch on December 3, 2009, composer Brad Buxer said Jackson called him for help on the project and that the two composed music for the game. Buxer also said he did not know which of their tracks the developers ultimately retained. TechCrunch’s 2009 interview with Buxer
That distinction matters: Buxer’s statement supports a connection between Jackson and music written for the game, but it does not identify every track Jackson worked on or establish that he composed the entire soundtrack.
Why was Jackson not credited?
Buxer said Jackson was unhappy with the sound coming out of the console and did not want to be associated with a product that, in his view, did not reproduce the music well. Buxer framed that as the reason Jackson was not credited. It is a firsthand account from a collaborator, not an official explanation confirmed by Sega.

Former Sega executive Roger Hector offered another account: he said Sega backed away from the collaboration after the 1993 allegations against Jackson surfaced. The Guardian reported in 2009 that Sega had not officially confirmed Jackson’s involvement. The available accounts therefore do not establish a single settled reason for the missing credit. Was “Stranger in Moscow” connected to the game?
Buxer said chords he and Jackson composed for the game were later used as a basis for Jackson’s song “Stranger in Moscow.” That statement links musical material from the project to the later song, but it does not reveal which specific Sonic 3 tracks Jackson composed or which parts of the original game score include that material. Did Sonic Origins confirm Jackson’s involvement?
No. In 2022, Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka posted about music changing in Sonic Origins, but GameSpot’s updated report says Naka later clarified that he felt misunderstood and was not confirming Jackson’s involvement. His post should not be treated as definitive proof. GameSpot’s report and update

That makes the collection a different soundtrack experience from the 1994 release, regardless of the unresolved history around Jackson’s contribution.

What can be said with confidence?
- Supported by Buxer’s account: he and Jackson composed music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
- Not established: which tracks the developers kept, or that Jackson composed the entire soundtrack.
- Disputed explanation: Buxer attributed the missing credit to dissatisfaction with console audio; former Sega executive Roger Hector said Sega withdrew after the 1993 allegations.
- Modern soundtrack: GameSpot reports that Sonic Origins uses recreated Sonic 3 tracks, and Naka’s post is not confirmation of Jackson’s role.
