No verified source currently shows Mia Goth saying that Instagram’s decision to let the image circulate was “incomprehensible.” The viral selfie-style picture was posted on October 8, 2026, by a verified account called “Mia Goth | Fan Page,” not by an account operated by Goth. Reports described the image as seemingly AI-generated, while Goth’s representative said she has no social-media accounts.
What actually happened
The post showed a selfie-style image resembling Mia Goth in a white T-shirt bearing the phrase “My ex is my biggest fan.” It spread rapidly shortly after entertainment reports said Goth had filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf. The shirt’s wording and the timing connected the post to those reports, helping drive attention, but the image is not evidence of Goth’s feelings, intentions or involvement.
Just Jared reported that the verified fan page had more than 1 million followers. Verification of that page does not mean it belongs to Goth, and nothing in the available reporting establishes that she authorized the post.

Did Mia Goth post the image?
No. Goth’s representative told Just Jared: “Mia Goth is not active on any social media accounts, including Instagram.” Us Weekly separately reported the representative’s position that “Mia has and never will engage with social media.” On that evidence, the picture should not be presented as a statement or publication by Goth herself.

Why the account name is misleading
Fan pages can use a celebrity’s name, photographs and likeness while being independent accounts. A verification badge may confirm an account’s status under Instagram’s systems, but it does not establish that the celebrity personally runs it. Readers should check the account’s biography, linked official pages and independent statements before treating a post as authentic.
Was the picture made with AI?
Contemporary coverage characterized the image as “seemingly AI-generated” or as appearing AI-generated. That wording matters: the reports available for this incident do not include a forensic examination, source file, generation history or confirmed detector result proving how the image was made.

It is therefore inaccurate to say that Instagram’s own image generator created the picture. The evidence supports only a qualified description of its appearance, not a claim about the specific model, tool or person responsible.

What is known about the “incomprehensible” quote?
The headline wording that Goth called Instagram’s handling “incomprehensible” has not been independently verified in the available coverage. Searches associated with the report found the representative’s denial of Goth’s social-media activity and broader reporting about Instagram’s AI policies, but no primary interview, transcript or attributable statement containing that exact wording.

Until an original source is produced, the quote should be treated as unconfirmed rather than as a direct statement from Goth. An article can accurately report that the claim circulated while making clear that Goth’s representative has denied she uses Instagram.
Why Instagram’s AI policies matter to this case
Instagram announced in August 2026 that it was renaming its “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile.” The company said it would limit the reach of accounts featuring AI-generated people when those accounts did not disclose that fact. The policy targeted profiles whose person was generated or substantially created with AI; ordinary AI editing, caption assistance and graphic help were described as outside that specific label.

That distinction leaves several unresolved questions in this incident: whether the account’s person was substantially generated, whether the post disclosed AI use, whether the likeness was used with consent, and whether Instagram applied any reach limitation. The published reports do not provide incident-specific answers.

In July 2026, Meta removed a feature that had allowed users to use images from public Instagram accounts as references for AI image generation after criticism about consent. Meta said: “Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.”

That rollback concerns a tool for generating images from public-account references; it does not establish that the Goth image was made with that feature. It does, however, show why disclosure, consent and likeness controls became central issues in 2026.

- Who created or uploaded the image.
- Which software, if any, generated or altered it.
- Whether the account disclosed AI involvement.
- Whether Goth or her representatives requested removal or a reach limitation.
- How many views or shares the post received.
- Whether any AI detector was used, and how accurate it was for this image.
- Whether Instagram removed, labeled or otherwise restricted the post.
How to evaluate similar celebrity AI posts
- Check account ownership. Look for an official link from the celebrity’s verified website or other confirmed channel; a fan-page name is not proof of authorship.
- Separate appearance from proof. Visual glitches may suggest synthetic media, but “appears AI-generated” is not the same as a forensic finding.
- Look for disclosure. Note whether the platform labels an AI-generated profile or the post itself.
- Consider consent. A recognizable likeness can be used without the person’s authorization, even when the image is clearly fictional.
- Find the original statement. Treat a quote as unverified until it appears in a primary interview, transcript or representative’s on-record comment.
- Check platform action. Distinguish between labeling, reduced distribution, removal and an account suspension; these are different responses.
The bottom line
The viral picture came from a verified fan page, not Mia Goth’s own Instagram account. Her representative says she is not active on Instagram or any other social platform. Reports said the image appeared AI-generated, but no public forensic evidence proves its origin, and the “incomprehensible” quote has not been independently confirmed. The episode illustrates the practical limits of verification badges and the continuing dispute over disclosure, consent and synthetic celebrity likenesses.
