Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival clearly takes cues from Resident Evil 7: its assistant game director named RE7 among the team’s major inspirations, and the game uses familiar survival-horror ingredients such as scarce ammunition, exploration, puzzles and first-person combat. The harder question is whether it also carries over RE7’s defining design aim: intimate, personal fear. A launch review describes Revival as more linear and more combat-focused, making “the wrong lesson” a fair criticism of its priorities—but not a proven verdict on every part of the game.
How much does Hellraiser: Revival owe to Resident Evil 7?
The influence is explicit, not merely a resemblance noticed after release. In a Gamescom hands-on preview published August 28, 2025, Revival assistant game director Aleksandra Pelivanovic said, “Resident Evil 7, 8, and 4 were our big inspirations and references.” That makes RE7 a useful comparison, though it does not mean the games share the same goals or execution. DBLTAP’s preview
The same preview described a first-person survival-horror action game with stealth, melee and ranged weapons, limited ammunition, and powers tied to the Genesis Configuration. Those systems place Revival in recognizable survival-horror territory. But a shared toolkit does not guarantee a shared rhythm: how often the game asks players to fight, retreat, explore or conserve resources matters as much as the presence of those mechanics.

What Resident Evil 7 was trying to do
Capcom’s account of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard frames its horror around a return to the fear associated with the original game and a more intimate, personal scale. Developers also discussed first person as a way to make that fear feel immediate. In other words, the camera was not just a presentation choice: it helped bring the player closer to danger. Capcom’s RE7 developer interview
That aim is a more useful benchmark than the loose idea that both games are first-person horror. RE7’s design intent, as Capcom described it, was to make fear personal. A game can borrow the viewpoint, guns and resource pressure without prioritizing the same kind of vulnerability or tension.

Where the comparison starts to break down
Combat and tension
The DBLTAP preview reports that Revival has stealth, melee and ranged combat, with ammunition in limited supply. Scarcity can create pressure, but combat also changes the player’s relationship to danger: enemies become problems to manage through weapon choice and fighting, rather than threats to avoid or endure. The presence of combat alone does not prove that Revival loses its horror; the balance and pacing are the key questions.

A launch-period GamesRadar review describes the game as more linear and says combat takes up more of the experience than its Resident Evil-like rooms and puzzles might suggest. That is one critic’s assessment, not an objective measure or a universal player response. Still, it supports a specific version of the “wrong lesson” argument: Revival appears to draw on survival-horror conventions without centering the same sustained, intimate dread Capcom said it wanted from RE7.

Exploration, inventory and puzzles
There are also clear points of overlap beyond combat. In an August 19, 2026 developer discussion, PlayStation Blog described Revival’s puzzles and inventory management in terms of the Resident Evil tradition. The post quotes a developer saying, “And you have to manage your inventory in a similar way to the Resident Evil games.” PlayStation Blog’s developer discussion
Those familiar structures can serve a different fictional identity. Revival is built around Clive Barker’s Hellraiser universe and the Genesis Configuration, rather than RE7’s specific setting and story. A separate launch review highlights an original Barker-inspired story, Resident Evil-style puzzles and the Labyrinth’s distinct design, complicating any claim that the game is simply a copy. So did Revival learn the wrong lesson?
That depends on what “lesson” means. If it means using first-person perspective, puzzles, resource management and combat to make a survival-horror game, Revival has recognizable precedents—and its director openly acknowledged them. If it means understanding RE7 as a project centered on intimate, personal fear, the comparison is less flattering: the reported linearity and heavier combat suggest a different emphasis.
That distinction is why “wrong lesson” works best as an argument about priorities, not as a factual claim that the game fails or that RE7 had no action. The available evidence supports both sides: Revival draws on Resident Evil, while its Hellraiser setting, Genesis Configuration, story and Labyrinth design give it elements of its own. Whether its combat-forward approach makes it less frightening is a judgment about the experience, not something established by the games’ shared mechanics or a single review.
