There is no verified, controlled comparison showing that GTA 6’s graphics got worse over three years. The recent official gameplay showcase drew praise for its detailed visuals, but former Rockstar developer Mike York also criticized some facial animation. Those are impressions of one set of footage—not proof of a graphics downgrade.

What the three-year comparison actually establishes

The claim that GTA 6’s graphics changed over three years needs two identifiable sets of footage captured under comparable conditions. The cited coverage does not identify a specific earlier build or provide a matched side-by-side analysis. It therefore cannot establish that the game looks worse now, or quantify how its graphics have changed.

TechSpot reported on August 27, 2026, that Rockstar had presented a gameplay showcase and described the footage as detailed. Its report links to Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. An official showcase confirms that the footage was presented by Rockstar; it does not, by itself, establish that every frame represents final retail gameplay or make it comparable to older footage.

What viewers noticed in the latest footage

In a September 7, 2026 interview, former Rockstar developer Mike York praised the showcase’s visual clarity, lighting, and lifelike details such as individual hair movement. He also thought some facial animation looked rough. These are York’s assessments, not a measured technical test or evidence of a broader consensus.

Viewers may also react differently to particular characters or scenes. A Reddit discussion, for example, includes a commenter’s impression that the difference across three years was striking, while noting the character was not the same. That is anecdotal reaction, not a controlled comparison or confirmation that the clips show equivalent development builds: the discussion.

How to tell whether two GTA 6 clips are comparable

A change in apparent sharpness, lighting, shadows, reflections, foliage, or animation may come from the game—or from differences in how the footage was made and shared. A fair visual comparison should identify:

Rank #2
Grand Theft Auto V - PC
  • Will take full advantage of the power of new generation systems and PC to deliver across-the-board enhancements including increased resolution and graphical detail, denser traffic, greater draw distances, upgraded AI, new wildlife, and advanced weather and damage effects for the ultimate open world experience.
  • The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
  • Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.
  • Includes Grand Theft Auto Online, the ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe.
  • All new content and gameplay created and released since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online including new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations
  • Provenance and date: where each clip came from and when it was published or captured. Treat leaked or unattributed clips cautiously unless their origin and build are corroborated.
  • Platform and build: the console and game version, if known. The cited reports do not supply these details for a three-year comparison.
  • Scene and camera: the same scene or genuinely equivalent conditions, including camera angle, time of day, weather, and movement.
  • Capture and display conditions: any disclosed resolution or performance settings, plus compression and playback differences that could affect image sharpness or detail.

Even when clips are available, describe visible differences separately from conclusions about them. “The foliage looks softer in this compressed clip” is an observation; “the game was downgraded” is a claim about a technical change that requires stronger evidence. Trailers and gameplay showcases can use different scenes and capture conditions, so an informal side-by-side is not conclusive.
