The claim that Elon Musk’s Terafab hired “a ton” of engineers from Samsung’s Taylor, Texas, fab—and that Tesla demanded “shitty terms” for its AI5 chip—has not been independently verified. Published reporting does establish that Samsung is producing AI5 prototype wafers on a 2-nanometer process, that Tesla is recruiting semiconductor specialists in Korea, and that Musk has proposed a separate Terafab using Intel’s planned 14A process.

What the Korean engineer reportedly claimed

The phrases “a ton” and “shitty terms” are attributed to a Korean engineer, but the authoritative reports available for this story do not include the original Korean post, a transcript, named hires, or documented commercial terms. No reliable published figure shows how many Samsung Taylor employees allegedly moved to Tesla or Terafab. The allegation should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as an established poaching event or a verified description of Tesla’s negotiations.

There is independent evidence that Tesla is seeking Korean semiconductor talent. The Korea Times reported on February 18, 2026, that Musk posted: “If you’re in Korea and want to work on chip design, fabrication or AI software, join Tesla!” Tesla Korea’s recruiting notice specifically sought AI-chip design engineers and asked applicants to describe their three most challenging technical problems. That demonstrates active recruiting, but it does not prove that Taylor employees were hired or that the number was large.

What Samsung’s Taylor fab is actually doing for AI5

Samsung’s Taylor, Texas, facility is tied to a confirmed AI5 manufacturing program. Yonhap reported on July 13, 2026, that Samsung had begun preparations after an executive said AI5 had completed tape-out—the final design handoff before mass production. Samsung said Taylor would use a 2-nanometer process, with initial operations expected later in 2026 and mass production for major customers, including Tesla, targeted for 2027.

Seoul Economic Daily reported on September 15, 2026, that Taylor had started prototype wafer production for AI5, was checking manufacturing yields and planned full supply the following year. The report identifies a 2025 Samsung–Tesla contract valued at $16.5 billion. That is the disclosed contract value cited by the report, not a per-chip price or a publicly itemized list of concessions.

The same report says Tesla wants AI5 chips for the Model 3, Model Y, Cybercab, Optimus humanoid robots and AI data centers. Yonhap likewise describes AI5 as Tesla’s custom silicon for Full Self-Driving, Optimus and data-center workloads.

What AI5 is supposed to power

AI5 is not a general-purpose retail processor. It is Tesla-designed silicon intended to run demanding machine-learning workloads across several product lines:

  • Vehicle autonomy: computing for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving systems in vehicles such as the Model 3 and Model Y.
  • Robotics: inference and control workloads for the Optimus humanoid robot.
  • Data centers: artificial-intelligence processing outside the vehicle.
  • Future vehicles: the Cybercab is among the programs identified in the September report.

The manufacturing evidence points to a staged process: tape-out, prototype wafers, yield verification and then planned volume supply. A prototype run is not the same as successful high-volume production; yields still have to meet Tesla and Samsung’s requirements before the 2027 target can be judged achieved.

What Terafab is—and how it differs from Samsung’s role

Terafab is described as a proposed in-house semiconductor manufacturing effort rather than Samsung’s contracted foundry operation. In an April 23, 2026, earnings-call statement reported by Tom’s Hardware, Musk said: “We plan to use Intel’s 14A process, which is state-of-the-art and in fact not yet totally complete.”

The same report describes a roughly $3 billion Tesla pilot research fab designed to process a few thousand wafers per month. SpaceX would handle high-volume manufacturing, according to the report. The division between Tesla’s pilot work and SpaceX’s larger-scale production, as well as any process-licensing arrangement with Intel, had not been defined publicly.

That plan is distinct from Samsung’s Taylor program. Samsung is the contracted manufacturing partner currently making AI5 prototypes on its 2nm process. Terafab is a proposed Tesla-led manufacturing route associated with Intel 14A, a node Musk said was not yet completely finished in April 2026.

Confirmed facts versus the unverified allegations

Question What published reporting establishes What remains unverified
Is Samsung making AI5 in Texas? Taylor began prototype wafer production, yield verification was under way, and full supply was planned for 2027. Whether production has reached sustained volume or met a specific yield target.
Did Tesla recruit Korean chip talent? Tesla Korea sought AI-chip design engineers, and Musk publicly invited Korean applicants. Whether “a ton” of Samsung Taylor engineers joined Tesla or Terafab.
What is the Samsung–Tesla deal worth? Seoul Economic Daily reported a 2025 contract value of $16.5 billion. Pricing per chip, volumes, payment milestones, guarantees, discounts or any alleged “shitty terms.”
What process will Terafab use? Musk said Tesla plans to use Intel 14A. Final readiness, licensing terms, production schedules and whether the plan reaches commercial output.

Timeline of the AI5 and Terafab developments

  1. February 18, 2026: The Korea Times reported Musk’s Korean recruiting message and Tesla Korea’s search for AI-chip design engineers.
  2. April 23, 2026: Tom’s Hardware reported Musk’s statement that Terafab plans to use Intel 14A, with Tesla piloting a roughly $3 billion fab and SpaceX handling high-volume manufacturing.
  3. July 13, 2026: Yonhap reported that AI5 had completed tape-out and that Samsung was preparing Taylor production on 2nm technology.
  4. September 15, 2026: Seoul Economic Daily reported prototype wafer production and yield verification at Taylor, a planned 2027 supply ramp and the reported $16.5 billion 2025 contract value.

What would verify the “poached a ton” and “shitty terms” claims?

Several kinds of evidence would materially change the assessment:

  • An original, dated Korean post or direct interview in which the engineer is identified and the wording is shown in context.
  • Named former Taylor employees confirming that they joined Tesla, Terafab or an affiliated manufacturing program.
  • Employment disclosures, court filings or regulatory records documenting an unusual concentration of departures.
  • A Samsung–Tesla contract filing or company statement specifying the commercial terms alleged in the claim.
  • A Tesla, Samsung or Intel announcement clarifying how Terafab’s pilot facility relates to AI5 production.

Until such evidence appears, the defensible conclusion is narrower: Tesla is recruiting semiconductor talent, Samsung is moving AI5 through prototype manufacturing in Texas, and Musk has separately described a Terafab plan based on Intel 14A. The scale of any employee transfers and the quality of Tesla’s AI5 contract terms remain unknown.
