Probably some did, at least occasionally. Fruit existed in some dinosaur habitats by the Late Cretaceous, and animals may have helped spread its seeds. But the evidence described here does not identify a dinosaur with a preserved fleshy fruit meal. Fossils support fruit availability and make consumption plausible; they do not show which dinosaur species ate fruit, how often they did so, or whether fruit was a major part of their diet.

Did dinosaurs eat fruit?

It is plausible that some dinosaurs ate fruit, especially in places where fruit-bearing plants were available. But “fruit existed where dinosaurs lived” is not the same claim as “a particular dinosaur ate it.” The strongest evidence for fruit in the dinosaur world comes from fossil plants, while the strongest evidence for an individual animal’s meal comes from preserved gut contents or the remains inside fossilized dung. The examples available here establish fruit in a Late Cretaceous forest and varied plant eating by particular dinosaurs, but do not document an identified dinosaur swallowing a fleshy fruit.

That distinction matters because several different questions are easy to collapse into one. Did fruit-bearing plants exist? Could a dinosaur have eaten fruit? Is there direct evidence that one did? Was fruit a routine or important food? Each question needs stronger evidence than the one before it. The fossils support the first, make the second credible, and do not settle the third or fourth.

What counts as fruit in the fossil record?

In everyday speech, “fruit” often means a sweet, fleshy food such as a berry or grape. Botanically, the term is broader: a fruit is a plant reproductive structure that develops from a flower and contains or protects seeds. Fossils may preserve a fruit, a seed, or another reproductive structure, but those are not interchangeable findings. A fossil seed proves that a seed was present; it does not by itself establish a fleshy covering that an animal would have eaten.

Even when a fossil is identified as fruit, its shape, size, and preservation may not establish whether it was soft, juicy, nutritious, or attractive to a dinosaur. Nor does the modern meaning of “fruit” automatically apply to every ancient seed-bearing structure. The evidence should be described at the level it supports: fruit, seeds, or other reproductive structures, rather than assuming every preserved plant part was a fruit like one found in a grocery store.

What the New Mexico fossil forest shows

A University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum report published July 9, 2026 describes fruits, seeds, and other plant reproductive structures from a fossil forest near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The forest snapshot dates to about 74 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous. The largest fruits reported from the fossil flora were about the size of a grape.

This is evidence that fruit was available in that particular place and time. It is not evidence of a particular dinosaur’s meal: the report describes plant fossils, not preserved fruit in a dinosaur’s stomach or droppings. The distinction is especially important because the fruit-size comparison does not establish that these fossils were equivalent to modern grapes in flesh, taste, or nutritional content.

James Saulsbury, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum and a co-author of the work, proposed that the diverse fruits could have been dispersed by early mammals, large dinosaurs, and other animals. He said: “Our findings suggest that story began earlier. If diverse, large fruits already existed in Cretaceous forests, they were likely being dispersed not only by early mammals but also by large dinosaurs and other animals.” The conditional wording is important: this is a plausible ecological inference about seed dispersal, not a report of a named dinosaur found eating a named fruit.

The US Geological Survey’s educational overview likewise states that fruit was available to the last dinosaurs. That supports availability late in dinosaur history, not the claim that every dinosaur group encountered fruit. A forest from about 74 million years ago cannot tell us what grew in every region or throughout the entire Mesozoic.

How scientists tell what a dinosaur ate

Diet reconstruction combines evidence of different kinds. Some evidence records what an animal actually swallowed; other evidence narrows down what it could have eaten or what foods were available nearby. The difference between direct evidence and inference is not a technicality: it determines how specifically a conclusion can be stated.

Evidence What it can show What it cannot establish by itself
Gut contents or a cololite Material preserved within or associated with an individual’s digestive tract, providing evidence of ingestion A complete, lifelong diet or what every member of the species ate
Coprolites Undigested remains in fossilized dung, which can reveal foods consumed The identity of the producer when the droppings cannot be securely attributed
Fossil plants in a habitat Which plants, fruits, seeds, and other structures existed in a place and time That a nearby dinosaur ate those plants
Teeth, jaws, and wear Clues about feeding mechanics, food handling, and what an animal could process A particular food item, such as fruit, without preserved dietary remains
Ecological comparison Whether a proposed feeding or seed-dispersal relationship is plausible Direct proof that a particular animal ate a particular plant

Gut contents are unusually informative because they connect food remains to an individual animal. Coprolites can also be revealing, but a fossil dropping may be harder to assign to a specific animal. In either case, the evidence has a limited scope: it records a meal or a period of feeding, not necessarily the animal’s usual diet across its life. A securely identified plant in one individual’s digestive contents is strong evidence that the individual ingested it, but it does not by itself establish how common that food was.

Plant fossils answer a different question. A fruit fossil in a forest deposit establishes the plant’s presence in that environment. It can make animal consumption possible or ecologically reasonable, but it cannot show that a dinosaur encountered, selected, or swallowed it. Finding edible plants and dinosaurs in the same broad region is not a fossilized meal.

Direct diet fossils: useful, but not proof of fruit

Minmi and a hadrosaur

The Australian Museum’s overview describes seeds and leaves among the gut contents of the ankylosaur Minmi. It also describes twigs, berries, and tough plants in the stomach region of a hadrosaur. These examples support the broader point that plant-eating dinosaurs could consume varied vegetation and reproductive plant parts.

They do not establish that the hadrosaur’s berries were fleshy fruits in the modern sense, or that berries were a regular staple. “Berries” is the reported description; without additional identification and context, it should not be converted into a more specific claim about fruit type, nutritional role, or frequency. The Minmi evidence similarly documents seeds and leaves, not a preserved fruit meal.

Diamantinasaurus

A 2025 study by Poropat and colleagues reports a cololite associated with Diamantinasaurus matildae from Queensland’s Winton Formation. The abstract dates the formation represented by the specimen to about 101–94 million years ago. The preserved material includes conifer pinnules, angiosperm leaves, and seed-fern fruiting bodies, alongside chemical biomarkers consistent with gymnosperms and angiosperms.

The authors interpret the specimen as direct empirical evidence of sauropod herbivory and as evidence that this individual was a generalist browser. That is a substantial dietary finding, but it is not a fruit-eating finding: the abstract does not report fleshy fruits in the cololite. Seed-fern fruiting bodies should not be casually relabeled as fleshy fruit. The case shows why the exact identity of the recovered plant material matters as much as the broad label “plant eater.”

What teeth and anatomy can—and cannot—tell us

Teeth, jaws, wear patterns, and feeding height help researchers reconstruct how dinosaurs obtained and processed food. The Australian Museum describes sauropods as leaf-strippers that lacked grinding back teeth, while hadrosaurs had batteries of grinding teeth. Those differences point to different feeding mechanics and can constrain the kinds of plant material an animal was equipped to handle.

But a tooth is not a menu. A jaw suited to cropping or processing vegetation does not identify whether the animal ate leaves, seeds, fruit, or some combination on a particular occasion. Tooth shape and wear can narrow down what was mechanically possible; they cannot substitute for preserved dietary remains when the question is whether a dinosaur ate a specific food.

Researchers also compare fossils with living animals and consider plant availability, feeding height, and how jaws move. These comparisons can help construct a plausible ecological picture. They remain indirect: a modern animal’s behavior is an analogy, not a recording of dinosaur behavior. A responsible conclusion keeps the analogy separate from the fossil observation.

Why one meal does not define a species’ diet

Even unusually direct evidence has limits. A stomach-region fossil or a coprolite captures what was eaten during a particular feeding interval. It may reveal a food that was normally uncommon, or one part of a broader diet. It cannot, by itself, tell us how often that food was consumed, how its importance changed with season or age, or whether other individuals fed differently.

A 2017 study illustrates the risks of treating broad dietary labels as exhaustive. Its authors interpreted multiple large dinosaur coprolites as evidence of recurring crustacean consumption and rotted-wood ingestion by large Late Cretaceous dinosaurs. This finding is not direct evidence about fruit, but it is a reminder that a label such as “herbivore” or “carnivore” may not describe every meal. Diet can be varied, and animals within a group need not all eat alike.

For fruit specifically, the available examples do not support claims that fruit was a major food source for dinosaurs or that a named dinosaur species regularly ate it. Those conclusions would require evidence that identifies the food and ties it to the animal, plus enough context to support claims about frequency or typicality.

How strong is the case for dinosaur seed dispersal?

Seed dispersal is a distinct claim from fruit consumption. An animal may move seeds without eating fleshy fruit, and evidence that a plant produced fruit does not reveal which animals moved it. To establish a particular dispersal relationship, researchers would ideally need evidence connecting the plant’s seeds or fruits to an animal’s ingestion and movement, or another compelling line of evidence. The New Mexico forest report’s suggestion that large dinosaurs likely helped disperse fruit is an ecological inference based on the fossil plants and setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That inference is plausible because large animals could interact with plant reproductive structures, but the report does not name a dinosaur species that dispersed a specific plant. It is therefore appropriate to say large dinosaurs may have been among the dispersers, not that the fossil forest proves a particular dinosaur swallowed fruit and carried its seeds elsewhere. Availability, ingestion, and dispersal are related ideas, but each is a separate evidentiary step.

How to read claims about dinosaur fruit eating

When you encounter a headline or museum label making a claim about dinosaur diet, identify the precise proposition and the evidence behind it. These distinctions are a practical guide:

  • “Fruit was available” means fossil plants show fruit in a particular place and time. It does not say a dinosaur ate it.
  • “A dinosaur could have eaten fruit” is a possibility based on availability and feeding ecology, not a direct observation.
  • “A dinosaur ate fruit” needs identifiable fruit or other relevant remains tied to the animal’s digestive contents or coprolite.
  • “This species regularly ate fruit” needs evidence beyond a single meal, because one individual’s remains do not establish a species-wide pattern.
  • “Fruit was a major food” is a stronger claim still; the evidence must support importance or frequency, not merely one possible or documented instance.

Also check the fossil’s geography and age. The New Mexico plant evidence is about 74 million years old; the Diamantinasaurus cololite comes from Queensland and dates to about 101–94 million years ago. These are different places and intervals, and neither should be treated as a snapshot of every dinosaur ecosystem. Precise dates and locations help prevent a local finding from becoming an overbroad claim about all dinosaurs.

What we can conclude

Fruit-bearing plants were present in at least some Late Cretaceous environments, and the New Mexico fossil forest documents diverse fruits and seeds about 74 million years ago. Dinosaurs in those environments plausibly encountered fruit, and large dinosaurs may have contributed to seed dispersal. Direct diet fossils show that particular dinosaurs ate varied plant material, but the examples here do not identify an individual dinosaur with a preserved fleshy fruit meal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The careful answer is therefore neither a flat “no” nor a confident species-by-species “yes.” Some dinosaurs probably ate fruit, perhaps occasionally, but the available evidence does not tell us which ones, how often, or whether fruit mattered much in their diets.
