Not in the way the headline suggests. CD PROJEKT RED never published a patch note calling a specific Adam Smasher health or damage reduction a “major nerf.” The encounter changed through two separate stages: Update 2.0 rebalanced the game’s main bosses and improved enemy AI, while Update 2.1 directly upgraded Smasher with better AI and a Sandevistan inspired by Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
What actually changed after Edgerunners?
The Edgerunners Update (Patch 1.6), released on September 6, 2022, added anime-inspired secrets, equipment, Photo Mode features, free downloadable content and gameplay fixes. Its published notes do not list a direct Adam Smasher reduction to health, damage or artificial intelligence.

The more important combat changes arrived later. Update 2.0, released on September 21, 2023, improved enemy AI, including reaction times and how enemies respond to Sandevistan effects. It also explicitly rebalanced the base game’s main boss fights and introduced armor penetration for main bosses. Those system-wide changes altered the conditions of the Smasher battle, but CD PROJEKT RED did not publish a Smasher-specific before-and-after stat table.
In December 2023, Update 2.1 made the clearest direct adjustment to Smasher. The late-game fight received improved AI and a Sandevistan ability modeled on his anime appearance.

Why players describe Smasher as “nerfed”
In the anime, Adam Smasher is portrayed as an overwhelming, highly mobile force. Earlier versions of the game fight were often perceived as less dynamic or easier to control, especially when players arrived with powerful late-game cyberware, weapons and optimized builds. That contrast can feel like a nerf even when no documented reduction occurred.
There are several reasons the comparison is not a simple one:

- Patch context: Update 2.0 changed enemy behavior and boss balance across the game, rather than publishing a single Smasher-only adjustment.
- Encounter design: The game’s pacing, arenas and attack telegraphs do not reproduce every moment of the anime battle.

Does Adam Smasher use Sandevistan in Cyberpunk 2077?
Yes, on versions containing Update 2.1, Smasher has a Sandevistan ability in the late-game encounter. CD PROJEKT RED described it as inspired by the award-winning anime. This is an ability change, not evidence that his base health or damage was reduced.
Is the fight harder after Update 2.1?
Update 2.1 was intended to make Smasher more capable and more faithful to his anime depiction by improving his AI and giving him the time-slowing mobility associated with a Sandevistan. That can make the encounter feel more threatening, particularly for builds that rely on predictable movement or uninterrupted attacks. The official announcement does not provide a universal difficulty percentage, time-to-kill change or numeric damage comparison, so the size of the increase depends on difficulty, build and tactics.

What the official notes do—and do not—establish
- Patch 1.6 is an Edgerunners tie-in update, but it does not document a direct Smasher nerf.
- Update 2.0 rebalanced the game’s main bosses and improved enemy AI.
- Update 2.1 specifically improved Smasher’s AI and added Sandevistan behavior.
- No official numeric before-and-after figures establish a percentage nerf to Smasher’s health, damage or time to defeat.
Therefore, “major nerf” is best treated as a player interpretation of how the game boss compared with the anime or with earlier combat expectations—not as a measured change announced by CD PROJEKT RED.

The post-1.6 content updates discussed here target PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One did not receive the later new-content updates. If you are comparing videos or memories of the fight, check the platform and patch version first; otherwise, differences may be attributed to the boss when they actually come from the game version.
