Claude helped an amateur astronomer analyze data and identify a possible exoplanet candidate, but the reported evidence does not show that a new planet has been confirmed. Gizmodo says Pavel Rabtsevich used Claude Code alongside TypeSafe’s Jev and Codex to examine TESS observations of the star TIC 4206066. The key reported signal is a slight dip in the star’s brightness every 3.18 days. As of October 11, 2026, a reported TESS follow-up window was still in the future.

What did Rabtsevich find in the TESS data?

According to Gizmodo, Rabtsevich, a 28-year-old product manager in Spain with no formal astronomy training, analyzed a narrow segment of publicly available TESS measurements spanning November 2025 to early January 2026. The report says the dataset covered more than 126,000 stars. TESS searches for exoplanets by measuring changes in a star’s brightness; a planet passing in front of its star can produce a recurring dip.

Rabtsevich focused on TIC 4206066, which the report describes as a star somewhat smaller than the Sun and about 116 light-years away. His analysis found a small dimming recurring every 3.18 days. Gizmodo says he also checked TESS measurements from 2020 and 2018 and saw similar dips. Those repeated patterns make the signal worth investigating, but they do not by themselves establish that a planet caused it.

The report attributes two further estimates to Rabtsevich: a possible planet a little over 1.4 times Earth’s size and a surface temperature near 1,000°F. These are estimates for an unconfirmed candidate, not measured properties of a confirmed planet. A second possible dimming signal, with an 11.13-day period, was described as less convincing.

What role did Claude play?

Gizmodo reports that Rabtsevich used Claude Code, Jev, and Codex to help work through the large dataset and refine candidate searches. He reportedly ran 74 tests with Claude Code in an effort to challenge the planet hypothesis. In one test, he used two TESS datasets to predict dimming in a third; the report says the predictions were correct in all three cases.

That account describes AI as an analytical aid, not the decision-maker. Rabtsevich told Gizmodo he chose which tests to run, judged their results, and compared outputs across models rather than accepting an initial answer. The report does not provide independent validation of the 74 tests or establish that the tools’ outputs were sufficient to rule out other explanations.

Candidate detection is not planet confirmation

A recurring transit-like dip is evidence to investigate, not proof of a planet. Other phenomena can mimic a transit; the report specifically notes that a binary star system can produce a false positive. NASA Exoplanet Science Institute research scientist Kevin Hardegree-Ullman told Gizmodo that confirmation requires ruling out false-positive scenarios. Depending on the target, that can be difficult: follow-up telescope time is limited, and some stars are too faint for useful observations beyond the initial signal.

Stage What the Gizmodo report describes What it establishes
Candidate identification A 3.18-day brightness dip in TESS data for TIC 4206066, with similar dips reportedly found in earlier observations. A reported, repeating signal that merits follow-up; not a confirmed planet.
Follow-up observation MIT reportedly approved a request for TESS to observe the target from October 31 through November 26, 2026, measuring brightness every two minutes. A planned test of whether the dimming recurs; the report does not give the outcome.
Confirmation The report describes the need to exclude false-positive explanations but does not report that this has been done for TIC 4206066. The available account does not establish a confirmed planet.

The observation dates and cadence in the table are claims attributed to Gizmodo’s report; it does not provide an independent official TESS or MIT record. Since the reported observation window had not begun as of October 11, 2026, there was no result from that scheduled follow-up in the account.

What would make the claim more convincing?

The planned TESS observations could check whether the star dims again when the candidate predicts. A recurrence would strengthen the case that the signal is real, but would not by itself prove a planet is responsible. Astronomers would still need to assess alternative explanations and obtain whatever follow-up evidence is feasible for the target. The report does not say what additional observations or analyses have been completed, or whether the candidate has since been confirmed or rejected.

Gizmodo also reports broader counts of more than 6,400 cataloged exoplanets and more than 1,000 TESS candidates subsequently confirmed by astronomers. Because the article does not identify the source catalog or an as-of year for those figures, they should not be treated as current official totals.
