There is a reported new PS5 exploit, but the available evidence does not show that AI found it or caused a surge in jailbreak activity. Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that the exploit, called Relapse, works on PS5 firmware through version 13.6. That establishes a reported compatibility range—not AI involvement, broader compatibility, or a measured surge.

What is the reported PS5 exploit?

Ars Technica reported in September 2026 that Relapse works on PS5 firmware up to 13.6. The report is the concrete development behind the current discussion. Its stated firmware range should not be read as proof that every console on those versions can be jailbroken, that later versions are affected, or that the exploit provides any particular capability beyond what the report establishes. Ars Technica’s report is the source for the compatibility claim.

Did AI find Relapse or cause a jailbreak surge?

That attribution is unverified. The Relapse reporting does not identify AI as the exploit’s origin, and the material available does not quantify an increase in PS5 jailbreak activity. “Surge” therefore describes a headline claim, not an established statistic.

There is relevant but separate context: OpenAI said on September 1, 2026, that its Astra model can, with appropriate tools and access, discover previously unknown security flaws and develop exploits across protected systems. This is a vendor statement about general capability. It does not show that Astra—or any AI system—was used to develop Relapse. OpenAI’s description of Astra cannot establish the origin of this particular exploit.

A technical landscape paper published by Hardwear.io in April 2026 is relevant background on PS5 security, but the indexed text available for it returned no match for “AI” or “artificial intelligence.” That absence is not proof that the full paper contains no such information. Hardwear.io’s paper does not supply event-specific evidence of AI involvement.

What does “works through firmware 13.6” mean?

It means the reporting attributes compatibility to PS5 system software versions up to 13.6. It does not, by itself, explain all exploit stages or establish success on every console running those versions. Nor does it establish support for firmware newer than 13.6. Treat the version as a reported upper bound, not a guarantee for an individual device.

What has Sony said about security and disclosure?

Sony says it accepts product vulnerability reports and addresses them responsibly. Its product security information also describes a security development lifecycle, and Sony links to a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. These are relevant details about Sony’s vulnerability-reporting process; they do not establish that the Relapse researchers reported the exploit through that program. See Sony Product Security and the PlayStation Bug Bounty Program.

What does Sony’s software agreement say about jailbreaks?

Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement for Iceland prohibits using tools to bypass, disable, or circumvent PS5 encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. It also says updates may include security patches and may prevent unauthorized or pirated content, or unauthorized hardware and software use. The cited agreement is specific to the Iceland region; it should not be treated as jurisdiction-independent legal advice. Consult the agreement applicable to your region for its terms. Sony’s Iceland-region agreement is the source for these provisions.

How to assess claims about AI and console exploits

  • Look for event-specific attribution: a source should say directly that AI was used to discover or develop the named exploit. General claims about AI capability are not enough.
  • Separate compatibility from impact: a reported firmware range does not guarantee that all consoles on those versions are affected or describe what an exploit enables.
  • Ask what “surge” measures: without a defined count, time period, or rate, the word does not establish a measurable increase.
  • Keep policy claims in scope: Sony’s reporting program and software terms provide company context, not proof of who created Relapse or how it was disclosed.
