Probably in part—but not by itself. A 2026 review argues that increasingly complex animals produced much more fecal material, and that fossilized feces helped redistribute carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and other nutrients through Cambrian seas. That recycling may have fertilized previously poor habitats and amplified the spread of animal life. Oxygen fluctuations, predation, food-web changes and new digestive abilities also have substantial evidence, so scientists do not have grounds to identify poop as a single trigger.
What the Cambrian Explosion was
The Cambrian Explosion was a rapid radiation of animal diversity and abundance that began about 540 million years ago. It is usually discussed as occurring across roughly 540–520 million years ago, although estimates for the full interval range from 13 to 25 million years. During that geologically short span, most major animal groups appeared and marine ecosystems became markedly more complex.
“The Cambrian explosion transformed life on Earth,” Julien Kimmig, a paleontology and evolution researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, said in a 2026 account. “During an interval relatively brief in geological time — between 13 and 25 million years — most of the main groups of animals appeared.”

The phrase “explosion” describes the speed of evolutionary diversification in the fossil record, not a single instantaneous event. The question is what combination of environmental and biological changes made that radiation possible.

What the fecal-revolution hypothesis says
Coprolites preserve a record of changing guts
Coprolites are fossilized feces. A 2026 study analyzed hundreds of them from 37 sites around the world. Over roughly 20 million years, the specimens changed from microscopic forms to larger spiral, granular, thread-like and clustered shapes.
Those changes track the appearance of more capable digestive systems, including increasingly complex intestines, jaws and digestive glands. A coprolite can therefore provide evidence not only of what an animal ate, but also of how it processed food and where waste entered the ecosystem.

Waste could have fertilized new habitats
Feces contain organic matter and elements such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and iron. As animals became more abundant and their digestive tracts more effective, larger quantities of waste could have moved nutrients from surface waters down through the water column. That process would have increased productivity in additional marine environments, creating food and energy for organisms living beyond the original feeding areas.

It is a form of habitat engineering and nutrient recycling that could have amplified diversification already under way.

Why poop cannot explain the entire explosion
Oxygen changes line up with radiations and extinctions
A University College London summary of a Nature Geoscience study reports that carbon- and sulfur-isotope records from Siberia show oxygen surges tracking evolutionary radiations, while low-oxygen intervals track extinctions. These isotope measurements are indirect environmental evidence rather than preserved animal behavior, but their timing provides an independent explanation for both expansion and collapse in early animal communities.
“This strongly suggests oxygen played a vital role in the emergence of early animal life,” said Tianchen He, the study’s lead author. Higher oxygen availability could have supported the energetic demands of larger bodies, active movement, carnivory and more complex food webs. Oxygen-poor periods, by contrast, would have restricted habitable seafloor and water-column environments.

Several biological changes may have reinforced one another
Reviews of the Cambrian record also connect diversification with predation, restructuring food webs and innovations in digestion. Better jaws and guts could let animals exploit new foods; predators could drive defensive anatomy and mobility; and newly occupied niches could create further opportunities for specialization. These processes are compatible with nutrient recycling rather than competing with it.

How the leading explanations compare
| Proposed driver | Timing signal | Evidence type | Ecological pathway | Can it address extinction pulses? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fecal nutrient recycling | Coprolite forms and sizes diversify across about 20 million years, alongside more complex digestive anatomy | Direct fossil evidence from hundreds of coprolites at 37 sites worldwide | Moves carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and organic matter through marine habitats, potentially making more environments productive | Not established by the coprolite study alone |
| Oxygen fluctuations | Isotope-based oxygen surges coincide with radiations; low-oxygen intervals coincide with extinctions | Carbon- and sulfur-isotope records, summarized by UCL from a Nature Geoscience study | Changes the amount of energy available for large, active animals and the extent of habitable marine environments | Yes, the reported oxygen pattern includes both radiations and extinctions |
| Predation and food-web restructuring | Associated with the development of more complex Cambrian communities | Substantial evidence in broader reviews, without one decisive trigger identified | Creates selection for mobility, defenses, new feeding strategies and niche separation | Potentially, but no single quantitative test has been established |
| Digestive and anatomical innovation | Increasingly complex intestines, jaws and digestive glands parallel changing coprolites | Body fossils and coprolite morphology | Expands diets and improves the transfer of energy through food webs | Not by itself |
What coprolites reveal about early animals
- Diet: Contents and texture can indicate what an animal consumed, although a specimen may not preserve every dietary component.
- Digestive complexity: Shape and size changes are consistent with increasingly specialized guts and feeding structures.
- Interactions: The distribution of fecal material records where animals processed food and deposited nutrients, adding an ecological dimension to body-fossil evidence.
- Scale of change: The worldwide sample shows that the pattern was not limited to one isolated locality.
The strongest point is that coprolites preserve a direct biological trace of animals altering their environment. They do not, on their own, prove that nutrient recycling preceded every diversification pulse or that it was equally important in every ocean basin.

Was oxygen or poop more important?
The available evidence does not support ranking one as the universal cause. Coprolites offer unusually direct evidence for a biological feedback loop: more animals and better digestion produced more waste, which could have supported more productive habitats. Isotopes provide a separate, geographically grounded record that links oxygen availability to both evolutionary radiations and extinctions.
The most defensible interpretation is an interacting-cause model. Oxygen may have set physiological limits; changing predators and food webs may have intensified selection; digestive innovations may have opened new diets; and fecal nutrient recycling may have helped those expanding communities occupy and fertilize more marine space. The Cambrian Explosion is therefore better understood as a system of reinforcing changes than as the consequence of one dramatic “eruption.”
Quick Recap
What scientists can—and cannot—claim
- Established: The Cambrian Explosion began around 540 million years ago; coprolites diversify in form and size across a roughly 20-million-year interval; and oxygen proxies correlate with radiations and extinctions.
- Supported hypothesis: More fecal material could have recycled nutrients and made additional marine habitats habitable.
- Not demonstrated: That poop alone initiated the Cambrian Explosion, that every coprolite represented the same ecological process, or that nutrient recycling was more important than oxygen in all regions and stages.
