Diamond can be patterned at nanoscale dimensions with a focused electron beam and water vapour, without implanting foreign ions in the process described by a 2014 study. The team etched lines narrower than 100 nm on inclined surfaces of single-crystal diamond; spectral analysis reported that the material’s optical properties remained intact. That result does not establish that nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres or their quantum functionality survive unchanged.
How water-vapour electron-beam etching works
Electron-beam-induced etching (EBIE) uses a focused electron beam and a gas-phase precursor. In the reported diamond process, water vapour supplies water molecules that adsorb on the surface. The beam dissociates those molecules into reactive fragments, which react locally with diamond to form volatile products. Those products leave the surface, removing material where the beam is directed.
Because the beam is steered by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), it can trace a pattern across the material. The demonstration used a variable-pressure SEM and produced lines narrower than 100 nm on inclined planes of single-crystal diamond. This is a reported feature size and geometry, not a general resolution guarantee for every setup or diamond surface.
What the diamond experiment established
The 2014 study by A. A. Martin, M. Toth and I. Aharonovich, published in Scientific Reports (DOI: 10.1038/srep05022), demonstrated a fabrication method rather than a finished nanoelectronic or quantum device. Its reported result was sub-100-nm line etching on inclined diamond planes using water-vapour-mediated EBIE.

The report says spectral analysis indicated that the diamond’s optical properties remained intact after etching. This is an encouraging materials-level observation, but it should not be read as proof that every type of damage is absent, or that every optically active defect retains its function. In particular, the experiment did not establish whether NV centres survive the process with their spin and optical performance unchanged.
Why use this method for diamond?
Diamond is considered for optical and optoelectronic structures because of properties including optical transparency and high carrier mobility. Potential structures discussed in the report include micron-scale lenses and photonic crystals. Diamond is also hard and chemically inert, which makes shaping it challenging.

Conventional approaches such as ion bombardment and high-power laser ablation can create surface damage or redeposition, according to the report. EBIE’s proposed advantage is local chemical removal driven by the beam, without implanting foreign ions in the described process. The source does not provide a head-to-head quantitative comparison of resolution, damage, throughput, yield, cost or processing speed, so it cannot establish that EBIE is superior across those measures.
What the result means for NV centres and quantum devices
NV centres in diamond are relevant as spin qubits for prospective quantum devices. Their usefulness depends on preserving defect properties, not simply on retaining the bulk material’s measured optical characteristics. The 2014 report raises the possibility of using EBIE to shape diamond structures for optical applications, but it does not show that NV-containing solid-immersion lenses were fabricated or that NV performance was preserved.

Accordingly, the careful conclusion is that water-vapour EBIE demonstrated nanoscale patterning while the reported spectral analysis found diamond’s optical properties intact. Whether it preserves the functionality of specific defects such as NV centres is a separate question left open by that demonstration.

The researchers described EBIE as potentially applicable to other material systems when a dissociated precursor radical and the target material can form a volatile reaction product. That condition matters: the method is not automatically suitable for every substrate or precursor. The reported diamond experiment is evidence for one specific combination—diamond, water vapour and a variable-pressure SEM—not proof of broad adoption or universal applicability.
