Diablo III’s Demon Hunter is a mobile ranged class built around weapon damage, distance control, traps, evasive movement, and shadow-themed abilities. Hatred fuels most attacks and returns quickly; Discipline is a scarcer resource reserved for tactical, defensive, and escape skills. Bows, crossbows, and dual hand crossbows are all legitimate choices. The strongest setup depends on your activity, equipment, game mode, and current patch—not on one weapon or skill bar that is best everywhere.
Demon Hunter at a glance
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| What role does the class fill? | Long-range damage with slows, traps, marks, evasion, and other tools that keep enemies away. |
| What resources does it use? | Hatred for most attacks and Discipline for tactical, defensive, and positioning skills. |
| Which weapons are supported? | Longbows, crossbows, hand crossbows, and dual-wielded hand crossbows, depending on the equipment and skills used. |
| What is the central skill? | Combining a Hatred generator, one or more Hatred spenders, control tools, and a reliable Discipline-based escape or defense. |
| Is dual wielding mandatory? | No. Dual hand crossbows are an option, not a universal requirement. |
Blizzard describes each Diablo III class as having its own resource system and playstyle. For the Demon Hunter, that identity comes from attacking at range while managing the danger created when enemies close the gap.

What is the Demon Hunter’s playstyle?
The class is designed to fight from a favorable distance rather than stand still and trade blows. You deal damage with weapon skills, slow or otherwise control approaching enemies, prepare traps for groups or tougher targets, and use evasive or shadow-themed abilities when the battlefield becomes unsafe.

That makes movement part of your damage plan. A good Demon Hunter is not merely trying to maximize attacks per second; it is constantly deciding where the next safe firing position will be. Open space lets you keep attacking while enemies spend time moving. Narrow terrain, fast melee attackers, and sudden gap closers increase the value of Discipline skills and pre-positioned control.

Blizzard’s class material presents smoke bombs, traps, slows, and evasive actions as survival tools as well as sources of utility. They are not redundant buttons to fill an action bar after damage skills are chosen. A build that kills quickly but has no answer when enemies surround it will feel unreliable, especially in difficult content.
How do Hatred and Discipline work?
Hatred: the attack resource
Hatred supports nearly all of the Demon Hunter’s attacks and recovers quickly. Your primary skill can generate Hatred, while stronger attacks and area-damage abilities spend it. The practical loop is to use a generator when your reserve is low, then spend the resource on the attacks that matter for the current target or group.
Because Hatred returns relatively fast, you can usually spend it proactively. Holding a full bar while ordinary enemies remain alive wastes part of the resource system. The exception is an encounter where you know a tougher enemy or wave is about to appear; saving enough Hatred for that opening burst can be worthwhile.

Discipline is more precious. It powers tactical, defensive, and positioning skills, so spending every point for extra damage can leave you without an escape when a melee threat reaches you. Preserve enough Discipline for the defensive action your setup depends on.
The official class description emphasizes this distinction: Hatred is the quickly recovering offensive pool, while Discipline is the limited pool that supports survival and control. A skill that costs Discipline should therefore be judged by what danger it prevents, not only by the damage or convenience it provides.
Blizzard’s historical Patch 2.1.0 notes discussed an earlier approach in which Discipline was used offensively in a way that undermined its defensive and tactical role. That note is historical context, not a statement of the current balance. Use the live in-game tooltip for present costs and effects.

What skills should I use on a Demon Hunter?
There is no single skill bar that is established as best for every activity, item set, patch, or game mode. Build a package in which each slot has a job and the resource flow makes sense.
Choose a Hatred generator
Start with a primary ranged skill that reliably generates Hatred. Blizzard’s active-skill material includes examples of a primary attack that also slows enemies. A generator with built-in control can do two jobs at once: sustain your spenders and buy time while targets approach.
Check whether the skill is comfortable against both single targets and groups. If it only feels good against one of those, let another slot cover the weakness rather than forcing the generator to do everything.
Add Hatred spenders
Hatred spenders provide your main damage, area clearing, or burst against durable targets. Pick them around the bonuses supplied by your weapon and other equipment. A spender that looks powerful on its own can be a poor choice if it conflicts with the weapon type, range, or resource rate your setup actually has.
Keep the number of spenders realistic. If several expensive attacks compete for the same Hatred pool, you may spend more time waiting for resources than dealing damage. One primary damage spender plus a complementary control or area option is easier to manage than a bar full of competing costs.
Reserve Discipline for control and escape
Use Discipline skills to control positioning, reduce incoming danger, or escape a bad engagement. A mark-type skill that costs Discipline can improve pressure on a priority target, but it should not consume the reserve you need to survive a sudden surround. Decide in advance which Discipline button is your emergency answer and protect its cost.

Use traps before danger peaks
Traps are most useful when placed before enemies reach you. Drop them at a choke point, around a strong enemy, or where a group is likely to cross while you continue firing from a safe angle. Waiting until a pack is already on top of you reduces the time available for the trap to influence the fight.
Select passives for the equipment you actually wear
Passive choices should reinforce the weapon and skills in your final setup. Blizzard’s passive guide lists Archery bonuses that vary by weapon type. The indexed official values are:
| Weapon arrangement | Archery bonus shown in Blizzard’s guide | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Bow | 8% increased damage | A direct damage benefit for a bow-based arrangement. |
| Crossbow | 50% Critical Hit Damage | More value when your build already benefits from critical hits. |
| Hand crossbow | 5% Critical Hit Chance | Supports a setup that values more frequent critical hits. |
| Second hand crossbow | 1 Hatred per second | Improves resource flow while dual wielding. |
These are in-game mechanic values displayed by Blizzard’s guide, not independent performance measurements. Balance can change, and the page does not state a publication date, so confirm the live tooltip before treating any figure as current.

Blizzard’s class and equipment material identifies longbows, crossbows, hand-thrown weapons, grenades, and dual-wielded crossbows as part of the Demon Hunter arsenal. In practice, compare three things: the skill and item bonuses your build needs, the relevant weapon-type passive, and how the weapon feels in the activity you play.
| Weapon choice | What it can offer | What to check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Bow | A conventional ranged setup with the bow-specific Archery benefit. | Whether your skills and equipment reward a bow and whether the listed damage bonus is useful to your current stats. |
| Crossbow | A crossbow arrangement with a critical-damage-oriented passive benefit. | Whether your build produces enough critical hits for critical damage to matter more than another weapon option. |
| Hand crossbow | Fast ranged attacks and a hand-crossbow-specific critical-chance benefit. | Whether the skills, quiver or off-hand equipment, and resource needs support this arrangement. |
| Dual hand crossbows | Two hand crossbows firing a continuous ranged salvo, with a second-hand-crossbow Hatred benefit shown in the passive guide. | Whether dual wielding improves your complete build rather than merely looking attractive in isolation. |
Can a Demon Hunter dual wield hand crossbows?
Yes. Blizzard explicitly states that Demon Hunters can dual wield hand crossbows, and its item material describes the pair as a continuous ranged salvo. This confirms the option; it does not make dual wielding mandatory or automatically stronger than a bow, a single crossbow, or a hand crossbow paired with a quiver.
Choose dual hand crossbows when the complete setup benefits from them: the weapon bonuses, passive effects, skill interactions, and resource flow must work together. If another arrangement supplies a required skill bonus or better supports your activity, use that instead. Weapon category alone cannot determine the best choice.

How do I stay alive as a Demon Hunter?
Control distance first
Start fights from the edge of your effective range and keep moving after each attack sequence. Slows and other control effects make distance easier to maintain. Do not retreat in a straight line through unexplored space if doing so creates a new group behind you; move toward a known safe lane whenever possible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use control before you need an emergency
Apply a slow, trap, or other control effect while enemies are still approaching. Early control creates more time for Hatred spenders and reduces the chance that several threats arrive simultaneously.
Keep one escape or defense skill available
Do not spend every Discipline point on routine damage or utility. Save enough for the escape or defensive button that your build relies on. If that skill is on cooldown or your reserve is empty, take a safer firing position before the next group reaches you.
Identify dangerous enemies early
Prioritize fast enemies, ranged attackers that restrict movement, and elites capable of closing distance quickly. A mark or focused spender can help remove the threat that is most likely to break your spacing, even when another enemy has slightly lower health.
Use terrain deliberately
Choke points can make traps and slows more valuable, while wide areas give you room to kite. Avoid fighting with your back against an obstruction unless the location prevents enemies from approaching from another direction.

Evaluate a Demon Hunter setup by the activity and version in which you intend to use it. A skill bar for ordinary exploration may prioritize movement and broad area damage; a tougher encounter may need sustained single-target pressure, stronger control, or more defensive Discipline tools. Equipment bonuses can change which weapon and spender combination is sensible.

Also included is the 'Guise of the Colossi' Unique Armor; a unique transmogrification plan that unlocks six armors that are inspired by 'Shadow of the Colossus' and work for all classes.
- This Ultimate Evil Edition contains both Diablo III and the Reaper of Souls expansion set, together in one definitive volume.
- Play solo or form a party of up to four other heroes.
- Define the activity. Decide whether you are clearing ordinary enemies, fighting elites, pushing difficult content, or learning the class.
- Check the current version. Skill costs, damage, item interactions, and passive values can be balance-sensitive. Read the live in-game tooltips rather than relying on an old build listing.
- Map your resource loop. Identify which skill generates Hatred, which skill spends it, and how often your Discipline reserve must be available.
- Assign a survival button. Name the escape, defense, or control skill you will keep available when enemies close in.
- Match the weapon to the package. Compare weapon bonuses, passive effects, and required skill or item synergies instead of selecting by weapon type alone.
- Test failure points. If you die, determine whether the problem is resource starvation, insufficient control, poor positioning, or inadequate damage before replacing random skills.
The official skill pages show many active and passive choices, but they do not establish one universally best configuration for every patch, season, activity, or item set. Any named build should state those assumptions clearly.
Common Demon Hunter mistakes
- Spending Discipline as if it were Hatred: offensive convenience is not worth losing your emergency escape.
- Choosing a weapon before choosing a skill package: the weapon should support the skills and equipment you actually use.
- Filling every slot with damage: without slows, traps, evasion, or another control tool, ranged damage becomes difficult to apply safely.
- Standing still because the target is nearly dead: a final few attacks are not worth being surrounded.
- Copying an old setup without checking the patch: historical balance notes and old tooltips do not guarantee current behavior.
- Assuming dual wielding is compulsory: Blizzard presents dual hand crossbows as an available option, not a class requirement.
Frequently asked questions
What skills should I use on a Demon Hunter?
Use a coordinated package: a Hatred generator, one or more spenders, control or trap tools, and a Discipline-based escape or defensive skill. The exact choices depend on your activity, equipment, mode, and current version; no universal setup is established for all situations.
What weapons can a Demon Hunter use?
Blizzard’s class material identifies bows, crossbows, hand crossbows, grenades, and other hand-thrown weapons, including dual-wielded crossbows. Compare the weapon-specific passive, skill and item interactions, and your activity before choosing.
Can Demon Hunters dual wield crossbows?
Yes. Dual hand crossbows are a supported Demon Hunter arrangement. They provide a continuous ranged salvo according to Blizzard’s item material, but they are not automatically superior to a bow or another supported setup.
What is the difference between Hatred and Discipline?
Hatred powers most attacks and recovers quickly. Discipline is scarcer and supports tactical, defensive, and positioning skills, so spend it deliberately and preserve enough for the escape or defense your build requires.
How should I play defensively?
Stay at range, slow or otherwise control threats, place traps before groups arrive, and keep an escape or defensive skill ready for enemies that close the gap. The exact button choices depend on the build.
Is there one best Demon Hunter build?
Not across every activity, patch, season, and item set. A recommendation is meaningful only when it names those assumptions and uses current skill and equipment information.
