Diablo V cinematics are now being filmed. Neil David Carter, Blizzard’s cinematics director for the Diablo series, posted a studio image on October 14, 2026, captioned “First shoot #Diablo5.” The post confirms that an initial cinematic shoot has started, but it does not show that gameplay capture, voice recording, or the complete game is finished.
What the “first shoot” confirms
Carter’s post is the first public confirmation that Diablo V cinematic production has entered an active shooting phase. GamesRadar+ reported that the image showed a studio setup and that no gameplay was included. The wording matters: “first shoot” identifies an initial cinematic production session, not a milestone called full production or content completion.

Cinematics can involve live-action or performance capture, virtual cameras, animation reference, blocking, lighting and other material later assembled into rendered scenes. A shoot may therefore produce only part of the footage needed for trailers or story sequences. Nothing in the announcement establishes how many scenes were filmed, how long the session lasted, or whether voice recording occurred at the same time.

Is Diablo 5 already in full production?
No. Blizzard has described Diablo V as still being early in development. The cinematic shoot shows that one part of the project is moving forward, while game systems, content and presentation can continue to change before launch.

When is Diablo 5 coming out?
Blizzard is targeting spring 2029. That is a release window rather than a specific day, and the company’s statement that development remains early leaves room for the schedule or features to change. The cinematic shoot should not be read as evidence that the game is close to launch: more than two years separate the October 2026 production update from the announced window.
What is Diablo 5 about?
Blizzard’s official premise is direct: “The heroes are gone, and Diablo has won.” Sanctuary has fallen under Diablo’s control, setting the new game after a decisive defeat rather than another immediate attempt to prevent it.

The panel recap describes the player character as the Heir to Westmarch. That character travels through a Sanctuary being actively reshaped by Diablo with a growing caravan of survivors. Insider Gaming reported additional story context placing the events roughly a century after Diablo IV; that timing should be treated as reported context, while Blizzard’s short announcement focuses on Diablo’s victory and Sanctuary’s collapse.
Announced classes and world design
Three classes named so far
- Demon Hunter: returning as an announced class.
- Monk: returning as an announced class.
- Plague Knight: a new class announced for Diablo V.
Blizzard has not presented this list as a complete launch roster. Additional classes, abilities and progression details could be announced later.

A Sanctuary that changes between visits
The announced world uses procedural elements. Terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards can change when players return, according to Blizzard’s panel recap. This suggests a more variable replay structure than a world in which every encounter is permanently fixed, but the public information does not yet define the limits of that system, its effect on story areas or how it will work in cooperative play.

Blizzard’s BlizzCon recap says more than 130 million players worldwide have entered Sanctuary across the Diablo franchise. That figure describes franchise reach, not the number of Diablo V players and not evidence about the new game’s production progress.

- Identify the work shown. A cinematic, gameplay slice, concept art image and systems presentation represent different stages of development.
- Check whether Blizzard gives a status label. “Early in development” is materially different from a statement that the game is content complete or in certification.
- Separate a target window from a date. Spring 2029 can narrow expectations without guaranteeing a launch day.
- Look for playable evidence. Until Blizzard shows sustained gameplay, core combat, progression, the procedural world and the announced classes remain descriptions rather than demonstrated features.
The bottom line on the first shoot
Diablo V has begun filming at least some cinematics, as confirmed by its series cinematics director. That is meaningful progress for the visual production pipeline, but it is a narrow milestone. Blizzard still calls the game early in development and is aiming for spring 2029, so the shoot is not proof of a finished game or imminent release.
